Chasing Power by Sarah Beth Durst is a fun, fast-paced adventure with a bit of magic and lots of suspense. It follows Kayla, a girl with telekinesis, who teams up with a boy to track down her mother. The mix of supernatural powers, mystery, and witty banter keeps things entertaining. Great for fans of action-packed YA with a twist!
I ended up DNF'ing this as, while the writing was accessible and the story interesting, it didn't grab me in the same way Durst's other novels have.

Chasing Power is the story of teenager, Kayla who has the power to telekinesis. She and her overprotective mother have spent the last 10 years running from Kayla's father, who killed her older sister Amanda. Kayla's mother asks her not to use her power, but with her friend Selena, she goes about Santa Barbara stealing money and expensive items from unsuspecting tourists and store owners. She is caught by a mysterious teenager, Daniel, who has the power to teleport. He blackmails her into helping him find his mother who has been kidnapped. Reluctantly she agrees and the two travel all over the world trying to decipher ancient clues and retrieve 3 powerful stones. Along the way, Kayla discovers the truth about her past while the two are betrayed by someone they thought they could trust.
I enjoyed the uniqueness of the story, the action and the relationship between Kayla and her mother, Moonbeam, felt realistic, but although it felt like the relationship between Kayla and Serena was a strong one - I never felt like I really got to know Serena - her characterization was so much weaker than the rest of the characters and I wanted more from her. Overall, it was a good read and the writing was excellent. I am a huge fan of Sarah Beth Durst due to her distinctive voice and world building.
I was truly hoping that Chasing Power would draw me in faster than I really was -- it took me quite some time and several tries to finish this book. I'm a fan of Ms. Durst's other books and while Chasing Power was a good read, I felt that it fell short of her other books.
