This inspiring picture book focuses on the holiday called Black Love Day. The story focuses on a boy noticing a mural run down in his neighborhood and through he and his neighbors improving and revitalizing the mural it explains the tenants of Black Love Day. The holiday. created in 1993, is for showing love, forgiveness and acceptance among Black people.
As the young protagonist works on the run down mural he is able to experience the different types of Black love. from romantic, to familial to admiration and more. This book celebrates black culture and will be informative to both Black readers and readers of other races. I would recommend this to maybe a four or five year old child. It's illustrations could be appreciated by a younger child, but the concept is a little abstract for any children younger than that.
I'd give this piece five stars, both for the art and the informative content.
Black Joy is an engaging and positive children's book geared toward African-American children and is also great for children of other races. This book explains the origin of Black Love Day, which was instituted in 1993 and is celebrated on February 13th. Black Joy also tells children what love truly entails and how to love themselves. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and show the positivity of an African-American community stemming from a love mural created by a young boy named Jaden.
I really enjoyed this book and I thought that it was perfect for the age group!
The illustrations in the book were superb and they really brought the book to life - the idea behind the book was great and I loved the focus but for me the book would be better called Black Love Day as that links directly to the story, and the annual day of celebrations that take place on 13th February - and that is something that should be embraced!
The book is full of positive messages and it is a great book overall and plenty to discuss after reading - I loved the mix of friendship, working together and collaboration, family, friendship and most of all love.
It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!
The story and artwork are wonderful. I would read from this author again. This will be a book I would buy for my children and other children.
Very cute book, I actually had never heard about black love day before reading the book. This would be appropriate to read from jk-grade 6 (4-12 year old).
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book portrays a beautiful message of love and inclusion to children. It shows many different forms of love such as friendship, community, encouragement and love of family history as well as love for oneself. The illustrations were beautifully done and I like the black love activities at the end of the book too.
I really liked this book! It's simple and easy for young readers to comprehend and enjoy, but it still has a lot of substance to it, which is great. It was honestly really impressive how the author found this perfect balance. Bravo on that part! Additionally, the message is wildly important for young kids to see and read about. The message ties together numerous valuable things: family, love, community, friendship, appreciation, and connection. The author flawlessly combined all of these big ideas into one short book without overwhelming its readers. Even further, the pictures perfectly complemented these values. Bright and crisp colors, emotion, and wonder filled every inch of every page, and made for a really vivid story and book. Lastly, this book is highly inspirational and definitely encourages young readers to add a little extra love to their own communities.
However, I do have one very small critique to make. I think that the title doesn't really connect to the story as well as it could have. It's a good title, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't fit this specific book. I believe that making the title something such as "Black Love Day" or simply "Black Love" would make more sense, while still maintaining the idea that I think the author wanted to convey to readers.
Other than that, though, I really enjoyed reading this book and I know that others will too!
Black Joy follows a boy named Jaden, who notices a mural in his neighborhood focused on love. He learns about different types of love and how it can be expressed. I loved the community aspect of the story and it went along with the mural. The illustrations in this book are great; they are colorful and full of movement/life. The page count was short enough to keep my kiddos' attention and we were able to talk about love afterwards.
Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group - becker and mayer! and NetGalley for an eARC of this book for an honest review.
