The Hunt
by Gregg Dunnett
Pub Date: Feb 21 2025

The Hunt is the 3rd book in the Detective Erica Sands series. DCI Erica Sands is on the hunt for her father, the infamous serial killer Charles Sterling, who vanished without a trace after a daring escape from a maximum-security prison. The trail has gone cold, and the authorities believe he has disappeared forever. But Erica knows her father better than anyone and feels his presence lurking in the shadows.

It's very well written, fast paced and incredibly suspenseful, especially nearing the ending with a real cliffhanger! I highly recommend this book.

Many thanks to #TheHunt #NetGalley and #StormPublishing for providing me with an E-Arc of this incredible book!

Thank you, Storm Publishing, and NetGalley for letting me review this book.

*I highly recommend you read the first two books in this series before you read this one.
*I also highly recommend making sure you are okay with reading books with a huge cliffhanger at the end.

The Hunt is the third book in the, Detective Erica Sands Series, by Gregg Hunt. This was an intriguing read! It was also fast paced, and full of drama (which I try to stay away from in books), however the drama in this book, is more suspenseful and mysterious which I do not mind as opposed to drama back chick lit books.

This is a 4 Part book: Part 1 begins with DCI Erica Sands learning she is extremely wealthy, after her father, Charles Sterling, escapes from prison, and passes away, leaving her all of his money. She stubbornly doesn’t believe her father is dead, and is obsessed with trying to find him. Part 2 is about an investigative journalist Pierre Cloarec, who uncovers documents leaked from a legal firm which launders money and provides tax evasion for dangerous people. Part 3 is about the maximum-security prison escapee himself, Charles Sterling and about Charles after his escape. Lastly, Part 4 brings everything together, however leaving the book on a cliffhanger! Ugh! Gregg Dunnett is a master at cliff hangers! Ingenious, but oh so frustrating.

However, this book was pieced together brilliantly, and kept me hooked and in for a very thrilling ride!

Not bad, I had read a previous book in the series and this book follows on from that. Erica is still obsessed with her father, an escaped serial killer and in this book, we find out more about his escape. I am not really that keen on Erica, she is gruff in her communication and her obsession takes over her worklife in this book. The plot is clever, interesting and although it is told in 4 parts, which at first seem to have little connecting them, the plot does come together well. Pacing is Ok and there are a couple of twists in the story. Descriptions are well done.
Very disappointed with the ending.
So on the whole, certainly not bad, but have read better . Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC

I am a lover of the writing of Gregg Dunnett having read the whole Erica Sands series and many other books by this author. What a brilliant series of twists at the end of this book and what a gripping tale. Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the chance to ARC this book.

Yet another fast paced, thrilling read by Gregg, I literally couldn’t put this down. Following on from the first two in the series, it follows the unstoppable Erica Sands in her pursuit to find the truth about her father. And what a truth it is. Completely brilliant, I cannot wait for the next instalment.

Thanks to Storm Publishing for the advance copy.

The book was really strong with the Sands scenes but kinda got dull with others. If it was just Sands it may of been 4-4.5 stars. I also loved how many different locations this story went to and how in depth the relationship for the main characters. Will probably read the next one in the series though as the cliffhanger had me speechless

The Hunt is on. DCI Erica Sands is searching for her murderous father, but is thrown into turmoil after receiving unexpected information, which she doesn't believe. Further lives are at risk with a cliff hanger ending. Well written and highly recommended.

Continuing DCI Erica Sands story, the focus initially is on a newspaper reporter who has the story of his life, coordinating with numerous countries to sift through the enormous amount of information they’ve received. Meanwhile Erica is even more obsessed with finding her father Charles Sterling, mass murderer who is on the run again.

While this is a decent enough read, I found myself getting more and more frustrated with Erica, her obsession completely taking her over, forcing her bosses to make demands of her, which she isn’t prepared to comply with. Her character does a disservice to all women in top jobs, although you can understand that she needs closure where her father is concerned. My least favourite of this series so far, with an ending that means I need to spread the next book.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

A continuance of Detective Erica Sands's adventures, The Hunt (2025) by Gregg Dunnett is a pseudo-police procedural series. Infamous serial killer Charles Sterling has vanished after escaping from his maximum-security prison and the trail has gone cold. Yet his daughter, Detective Erica Sands still feels his presence, and is convinced he is still alive. The narrative is split into four sections, opening and closing with Erica’s story. The second section seems odd, given it concerns an international banker and the third is Charles Sterling focused. They do gel together in a cliffhanger climax that, unfortunately, leaves the reader requiring the next book to know its outcome. A tale predominantly focused on Erica and her serial killer father, it's more a family thriller and a ho-hum two and a half star rating. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without any inducement. With thanks to Storm Publishing and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes.

This book passed the time just fine, but was my least favorite of the three so far. I prefer when Sands is in most of the book. Still invested and looking forward to the next one! Thanks to Netgalley for the free advanced copy in exchange for an honest review, book publishes February 21.

Wow! Just wow! A gripping story full of twists. I'm loving this series. The characters are so complex. There are plenty of twists and the suspense is through the roof. And that ending!

DCI Erica Sands is trying to determine if her father, serial killer Charles Sterling, who escaped from prison with the help of a guard, is involved in the murder of a journalist who was putting together an expose on a huge financial fraud that would include a passing reference to her father.
She goes on a personal leave to fly to the small village on the coast to try to track down more info.
The story was compelling and suspenseful but just a little too pat in places, for me.
However, it was still a good read for me until the end.
It quickly went from 4 to 3 ⭐⭐⭐

3* Half-decent tale spoiled by a woman cop who gives women in position of power a bad name and rep.

It was easy to get into this book despite my not having read any others. I didn't like the female character at all - the title of my review suffices as explanation. She was brash, arrogant, rude, in need of DEI training (maybe they could ship her to 2025 USA? Sounded like she'd be at home there). Not liking her didn't quite manage to spoil that she's got good cop instincts and a nose for the truth, however farfetched it was.

Was I sorry for her predicament at the end? No, because of how unpleasant she'd been. Would I read another? Yes, because she'll get out of this situation and for the life of me, I can't fathom how.

This is the third book in this series about DCI Erica Sands, she looking for her father who committed murder and escaped from prison. Before he went into hiding he killed another person.
I liked the plot, but to get a better understanding of the story I think you need to read the first two books. Erica is a great detective, but is so focused on finding her father she can’t do her job. The story is in three parts and each tell what’s been going on. It’s a good crime read. 3.5 stars Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.

Rounded up to 3.25
This is the third book in the DI Erica Sands series. In the latest installment, Erica's serial killer father Charles Sterling has escaped from prison. Erica is determined to hunt him down. This story unfolds in 4 parts, and ends on a cliffhanger. There is a lot happening here.
The first part deals with Erica hyper focused on hunting down her father. She decides to go to Brazil to find Barney Atkinson- the guard at the prison who helped her father escape. While there she meets lawyer Damien Reynolds. He tells Erica that a man named Jeremy Collins has passed away. Jeremy lived in Vietnam. But the man that died is really her father, Charles Sterling. There is so much evidence that she is given to prove that it is indeed her father, but Erica does not believe this. And.. her father has supposedly left her a big inheritance.
Then the story moves to reporter Pierre Cloarec (from Paris). He is looking into a big story about tax evasion, but for safety reasons he is moved to another town where he can hide. While there he meets an american named Richard Brown. Pierre becomes somewhat suspicious of Brown.
Then the story segues to Charles Sterling. His past, his escape and all about him.
Then we return to Erica. She quits her job so that she can go hunt down her father who she refuses to believe is dead.

The main characters from each section converge together to put pieces together.
So.... are you still with me????

This was A LOT!!! There were several characters and plots. I felt I needed a story board to keep track of it all. The pacing was a bit erratic, starting off with a quick pace, then really, really slowed down. It started to pick back up towards the end, just to have a cliffhanger.
I feel that the character of Erica is brash and caustic- much like she was in the first novel. This made it hard for me to connect to her, and I became irritated with her many times.
I do feel that the author connected all the characters/events together well in the end. The ending, although a cliffhanger, was well done and sets the plot for the next installment. I will have to read it to know how this saga ends!

Overall it was an ok read, but gets a bit convoluted in places. I think you would need to read the series from the beginning to really understand Erica.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This series just keeps getting better and better and I can not wait until the next instalment, DCI Inspector Erica Sands has been searching for her father, Charles Sterling, a serial killer & mastermind who absconded from prison with a massive fortune in bitcoin, but when Erica is told her dad has died she will not believe it and sets out to find him even though everyone else thinks it’s true, but one thing about Erica is she does not give up until she gets her answers.

I very much enjoyed this book! It reminded me of shows I enjoy like Slow Horses and Broadchurch. Erica Sands is a detective with an estranged father who happens to be serial killer and master con artist locked up in a maximum security prison. One day she receives a letter indicating that he is dead, and knowing what a master of deception he is, she has every reason to distrust this news. What unfolds after that is quite a suspenseful and action packed with twists that kept me wanting more. This book had everything I didn't know I enjoyed all in one. I look forward to seeing more from this author!
