Writing Mr. Wrong is a second chance romance between two high school classmates who shared a kiss before falling out. Mason is now an aging hockey star and Gemma is a debut novelist who based her jerk male lead on Mason. They’re brought back together on a talk show and decide to fake date as a way to promote Gemma’s book and rehab Mason’s image.

There were some cute moments but ultimately, I think Mason was flawed in a way that made him unlikable and I didn’t quite see what Gemma did. As much as I love Kelley Armstrong, I don’t think contemporary romances are her style and that’s ok.

I loved the connection in the story between the character in the book and her high school crush. Throw in some fake dating and I was hooked. Cute spicy romance that read quickly. Perfect for your next vacation.

I really, really loved this book!

I've been reading quite a few sports romances lately and this one was just perfection. It didn't focus on hockey to much and it didn't focus on her writing career overly much... it was the perfect meeting of two characters about to fall in love.

What really set this book apart for me were the little extra twists and turn that make you think it's going to play into a trope and have you rolling your eye - but it's self-aware enough not to. Sigh! It was so good.

I highly recommend this one!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc. All opinions expressed are my own.

Another fun romance! I love the way Kelley writes characters. Their dialogue is what I was we could all talk like. Always logical & reasonable by the end. I liked everyone in book. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize she was the sister from the first novel, which is a fun Easter egg!

Kelley Armstrong follows up the success of her first rom-com “Finding Mr. Write” with “Writing Mr. Wrong,” which follows Chris’ sister, Gemma, who has just had her first romance novel published. The only problem is she based the male lead after Mason, her high school crush who went on to become one of the most well known hockey players on the Vancouver Growlers hockey team. It seems to be high school all over again when the “mean girl” invites Gemma to promote her book on the local morning television show. However, she neglects to tell Gemma that she also invited Mason as well. Surprisingly, Mason rescues Gemma by spinning the interview in her favor and thus begins the story.

Mason is battling his own public and personal demons and when the interview goes viral, both Gemma’s and his publicists agree that appearing in public as a “couple” will work positively for both their careers. Except, Gemma has never really gotten over Mason’s rejection of her in high school and Mason has never gotten over Gemma as “the one who got away.” This is a rom-com so you can’t take anything seriously. Kelley Armstrong continues to captivate readers through her character development and witty banter. This was a thoroughly predictable yet equally enjoyable read. I will continue to read anything that Kelley Armstrong puts out. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for my unbiased opinion.

My Thoughts

Debut author Gemma Stanton and pro hockey player Mason Moretti have a past history and not one Gemma remembers fondly.

20 years after their last encounter the pair are brought together again because of her brand-new books leading male characters inspiration, Mason Moretti, becoming a secret no more.

Part meet-cute, part second chance romance, part rom-com at times and always an easy flowing read that brings two people back together at just the right time in their lives.

Rooting for these two to get their long overdue second chance was a no-brainer for me and taking the journey to get there with Gemma and Mason was an interesting trip, no pun intended.

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the e-arc!

Writing Mr Wrong reminded me just how much I love and enjoy contemporary romances. This book’ has the perfect amount of hockey/hockey references, comedic timing, second change romance and excellent writing style. Highly recommended for anyone that the synopsis or book cover remotely appeals to because it’s that good! It’s a quick, easy, read with a happy ending.

In Kelley Armstrong's Writing Mr. Wrong we are given a fun, easy to read romance that clicks a lot of boxes.

Mason shows his vulnerability and Gemma her resilience, in this book about teens who find each other as adults and rekindle a friendship to romance.

I'm a sucker for this kind of redemption stories and I really enjoyed both the main and secondary characters - I didn't have to think much throughout the plot (that's a good thing!) and could just enjoy it.

Reading this was a great way to spend an afternoon.

I absolutely loved this second book in the series! Watching them both work to overcome their issues was almost as sexy as the sexy bits. Can't wait for book 3.

It was such a delight to read this book! I love Kelley Armstrong's writing, and her first rom-com was a lot of fun, and this hasn't been listed as a series, though there are interconnected standalones, Gemma is Chris's sister. I loved getting her story!

The idea of this famous guy, at least in Canadian sports, having feelings for you, that's a fantasy. We, as readers had the full picture, he doesn't tell her everyone on the page that he tells us, but yeah, it was so sweet to read! I loved reading their romance!

The idea of having someone ask to be told what their rough spots were, personality wise, in being an asshole, it was something that she had to deal with. Especially with the way that her ex-husband treated her. But it gave them time to hang out with each other, though mistakes were made.

I don't know why, but I sometimes wish that she could've showed him off once they were in a solid relationship, like to her ex, or to their fellow former high school student with the show that brought them back together. Like, ha, you were wrong. But maybe I'm just petty like that.

Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Kelley Armstrong!

This was a fun quick read - hockey-adjacent but not a hockey romance! I enjoyed "Finding Mr. Write" and this was a fun folllow-up. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

I need to start by saying I love this author and have read all her books. I also need to disclose that I'm not a fan of romance books.
This book was lighthearted and easy to read. It wasn't one of those rip your clothes off romance books, which is probably why I enjoyed it. The characters were well developed and easy to like.
The pace of the book was fast and easy to follow.

I'd recommend this to friends looking for a lighthearted fun read.

Thanks to Netgalley for this advanced copy.

I give this one 4 stars. Honestly, going in, I wasn't sure what to expect. I love Kelley Armstrong and will do just about anything yo read all of her books, but I wasn't the biggest fan of her last romance. This one, however, was incredible. I love the vulnerability of Mason and the strength (though slightly down-trodden) of Gemma. This reminded me why I love Kelley's character so much. They're never one-dimensional, and they always feel so real. I can't wait for the next romance she writes!

Definitely worth the read! This is a fun, no need to think romance that lets you watch the ‘movie’ unfold as you read the story. The characters started out immature and grew emotionally along the way and ended up in a believable relationship at the end. I just wish the epilogue was a little longer as the book seemed to end a little abruptly.

I went into this super excited, as I enjoyed this author’s previous contemporary read and the premise sounded fun, but this didn’t come together for me. The writing was good, however, I couldn’t get over the fact that the MMC just wasn’t redeemable in my eyes and I didn’t believe the couples interest in one another. I also didn’t love the disconnectedness of the couples past, their reconnection, and their holiday retreat - it felt like three separate stories without total cohesion.

Overall, it was fine, but I wouldn’t read again.

I enjoyed Kelley Armstrong’s ‘Finding Mr. Write’ and excited to give a five heart review to ‘Writing Mr. Wrong’. Our FMC Gemma, finds herself coming face to face with the inspiration of her first romance novel and high school crush Mason, during a morning talk show (set up of course by forever high school mean girl turned talk show host). The two then decide to ‘fake date’ as a way to reconnect and also improve both of their PR. What in turn happens is a deepening of friendship and of course the (re) kindling of a romance. I really loved how Armstrong developed these characters. Neither one was a pushover and both had personal epiphanies. This is an engaging and quick read and I highly recommend to add to your TBR pile, and perfect for your next vacation. Thank you NetGalley and Forever Publishing for the ARC.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book. Gemma is a newly published romance author who based her first male protagonist on hockey star Mason, an old high school friend who left her hurt. After years apart they’re thrown together for a publicity stunt leading to a fake relationship, a few mishaps and some romance along the way.
This story had me laughing out loud with its witty banter and two adorable Grandmas. I found myself rooting for Gemma and Mason and cheering them on. This was a really nice easy read, a little drama, a little love and a little sexy.

Gemma is a romance novelist who gets surprised with her former crush aka inspiration for the hero of her book that’s been published. He also happens to be a famous hockey player. I liked the concept of this at first, but it just felt like Gemma didn’t like him that much and it was a bit off-putting to me which made me not really into the romantic aspect.

Thanks as always to NetGalley for the ARC.

I did receive an advance copy of this book for review. I absolutely LOVED it. This one is even better than Finding Mr. Write, which I read when it first came out. The funny thing is, I didn't even notice the subtle connection between the two until close to the end of the story, when it finally dawned on me. It might just be because it's been awhile since I read that one and names weren't setting off bells.

Gemma is so real. It was absolutely easy to identify with her, to read the story from her point of view, with her fears and feelings right there. And I really like that Mason isn't some highland laird from the novels where everything is bodice ripping and characters don't have to have personalities...because he does have personality, and lots of it.

I don't read a lot of romance novels these days, mostly because of the descriptive in my last sentence. I love the fact that Kelley didn't sell out to write a different genre. She still has real characters with real feelings and personalities, who have to work through problems and challenges in life situations. Maybe some of the situations are larger than life, but the positions the characters are in demand that as well.

This is a great book and I was disappointed when it was over, because I wanted to read more. Definitely looking forward to the next!
