This book made me feel even stronger in my desire not to have children, and made me respect mother's even more too.
If you are a fan of domestic thrillers with a side of the supernatural, you will love this novel. I read it in 2 days, and it was very compelling. It was missing...a something that I can't quite put my finger on yet.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for the e-arc!
Helena Echlin’s Clever Little Thing is a psychological thriller debut about Charlotte, a mother who is pregnant with her second child, as she navigates the sudden change in behaviour of her first child, Stella, following the sudden death of her babysitter.
I was really intrigued by the synopsis and I have to say it didn’t disappoint. Clever Little Thing was well written and touched on the complexities of diagnoses in children and motherhood. I thought Echlin did a good job keeping the tension within the story; the novel was creepy and almost unsettling. However, this was more of a slow burn than I anticipated, so while I did like the novel, it didn’t go above and beyond my expectations.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a the ARC.
This didn’t work for me, the idea has been done so many times and the execution and level of unbelievability just honestly ruined the point for me.
I do know there is a market for this story but unfortunately it was a miss for me.
