I've been holding on to this book for a long time and finally got around to reading it. I loved the idea of the book - an apprentice magician. Although I wasn't expecting anything close to the very famous magician book, I guess I did have some underlying assumptions. They didn't prove true.

I enjoyed the idea of paper coming to life and stories written on paper being able to be played out before your eyes. I did not enjoy the middle part of this book where Ceony was on a grandiose adventure. I skimmed a lot. There were descriptions missing, and not because I skimmed! The author seemed to skim through her transitions as much as I skimmed through the writing.

As I was reading this book, I had no intention of continuing the series. Until I got to the end. And now I kind of want to know what happens with Ceony and Emery as they continue their Folding lessons.

Ceony Thrill is assigned to apprentice under the famous Emery Thane. Though she is thrilled to be able to apprentice, she is very disappointed. She didn't want to be a folder. Nobody really does. Which is why there aren't very many of them. But as she gets to know him and the magic surrounding folding, she becomes more attracted to the skills she can learn. She grows used to her new life until something unexpected happens and she's left to figure out how to fix things before she loses Emery forever.

I have to be honest. I did not think I would enjoy this book at all. I thought it would be silly and very poorly written. I thought that I would not be able to finish the book at all. You will imagine my surprise when I just couldn't put it down. I finished most of the story in one sitting. Probably would have finished it all in one sitting had I not had some scheduling issues that demanded my time.

The narrator was fantastic as well. She really knows how to captivate attention and draw a reader into a story. I fully believe she could get somebody who doesn't enjoy reading into listening to a full book narrated by her. She's that good.

I do fully recommend this book. I'm glad I decided to give it a chance. I can't believe I almost missed out on such an amazing story due to being narrow-minded about it. Oh well, I overcame it and read it anyway. That's what matters in the end, right? Looking forward to reading the rest of this trilogy!

I was intrigued by the interesting concept. The story started out strong, but turned out to be a lighter read than I had expected. The writing was good, characters were interesting, and the magic was refreshingly unusual, but I felt that the early stage of the apprentice's training could have been more fully explored before rushing on with the story. All in all, a quick, fun read.

This book was a fun read...and such a different way to look at magic.

The one thing I really didn't care for was the instalove that seem to appear between the two main characters, especially since they are student/teacher.

I like how this story lets people know that even though we might not always get what we want, we should always do the best we can with what we do get.

Although I found the characters and the plot of the story to be interesting, I found it quite hard to read due to the amount of flashbacks. This made the stroy telling quite jolting and it made the story feel slower than what it actually was. The thing that I loved the most was the magic system and the potential that it has. Ceony is a great character and I felt that she was quite realistic as she was smart and very practical; dealing with what life has given her rather than complaining. So despite not being blown away by this first installment, I have hope that the next book will continue to build on the depth and detail of this world and the wonderfully crafted magic system.
