**3-Star Review: *We Will All Go Down Together* by Gemma Files**
*We Will All Go Down Together* by Gemma Files is a compelling collection of short stories that explore themes of horror, identity, and the human condition. With a mix of speculative fiction and traditional horror elements, Files crafts narratives that delve into the darker aspects of life, often with a twist of the surreal.
Files’s writing is sharp and evocative, skillfully creating unsettling atmospheres that draw readers into each story. The collection showcases her range, with some stories focusing on personal horror while others venture into the realms of the uncanny and supernatural. Her ability to weave emotion with eerie storytelling makes for some genuinely memorable moments throughout the book.
However, like many short story collections, the quality is uneven. While some tales resonate deeply, others feel underdeveloped or lack the impact that the more powerful stories achieve. Additionally, readers may find certain themes repetitive across multiple stories, which can detract from the overall enjoyment of the collection. The pacing varies significantly from one story to another, leading to a somewhat disjointed reading experience.
Overall, *We Will All Go Down Together* is an intriguing collection that showcases Gemma Files’s talent for blending horror with introspective themes. While it may not resonate with every reader, those who appreciate dark, thought-provoking stories will find it a worthwhile read.
This is really a collection of short stories which I didn't expect it to be. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy most of the stories, the last stories did get better. They were all very slow and I didn't feel invested in any of them. I think the stories are meant to be connected but I'm not sure.
I'm actually a bit disappointed that I didn't really like it.
