The Memory Curse picks up where The Lost God ended. Events at the end if that book must now be dealt with and moved on from. A lot of these things were an absolute doozy, so moving on is easier said than done.
This book was a ride for me. I continue to struggle with who Cecilia should end up with. I'm not sure I've ever struggled with making this choice so much! I care about both MMCs, and that is really not usually the case for me in love triangle situations. Sheila puts the characters and us through it in the 3rd act. So much so that I almost cried on an airplane while reading and books RARELY make me cry.
I am super excited to see where things go within this world (and want to give all of the characters a big hug).
I loved the audio narration so much! Having a narrator for each of the big three characters is the perfect choice for this story, where all three are so important. The emotion they bring to the story is top-notch. The narrators all speak clearly, and I was able to speed it up without issue
Thanks to Sheila, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for an ALC of this audiobook for an honest review.
I hate to say it, but The Memory Curse really didn’t do it for me. Getting through this book was a serious struggle from start to finish.
First off, the plot was incredibly messy. It felt disjointed and hard to follow, with too many subplots that didn’t come together in any satisfying way. There were moments when I thought it was finally starting to make sense, only for the story to veer off in another confusing direction.
The actions and dialogue were another major issue. The characters in this story often seemed to act in ways that didn’t make sense or were inconsistent with how they’d been portrayed earlier. The dialogue felt stilted and unnatural, making it hard to connect with anyone. It wasn’t just awkward; it took me out of the story completely at times.
And then there was the love triangle... it was an absolute mess. The dynamics between the people involved were so poorly developed, I couldn’t even tell what the protagonist was supposed to feel or want. It felt forced and lacked emotional depth, making it hard to care about any of the relationships.
Overall, The Memory Curse just didn’t work for me. There was a lot of potential, but the execution fell short in so many areas. It was frustrating to keep reading, hoping it would get better, but unfortunately, it never quite did.
