I enjoyed that the beginning of this story was set on Halloween night and around the same area as a haunted urban legend. I do however wish that there would have been some sort of haunting come into play in this story. This book really gave me the imagery and atmosphere of a spooky Halloween night, it follows a case of a murdered girl throughout the story and is a whodunnit. I do wish I would have had more suspects along the way because eventually towards the last half of the book is when the reader finally gets some insight as to what really happened that night. I liked that it ended in a way that wasn't what you originally thought it was going to be! It was a little refreshing to see because what you originally think has been done so many times before in thrillers. A great thriller for anytime of the year!

This book reminds me of Freida McFaddens books. Because you can’t guess who’s going to be the killer that killed Sarah. It kept me on my toes through out the book I wanted to know more. I loved the book!

I enjoyed this book – it was hard to put down! A student ends up dead on Halloween night after a party in the haunted woods. The story unfolds through the lens of multiple character perspectives, each painting new color and details into what happened the night the death occurred. I love a good thriller and it’s even better when I can’t guess the outcome, which is exactly how this book was written…. The truth isn’t revealed until the very end. This book is an atmospheric and suspenseful mystery, making it a great choice for an October read. The Halloween setting, combined with the eerie legend of Sally in the Wood, adds a haunting element to the story. The mystery itself is well-crafted, with the author casting suspicion on multiple characters. It kept me guessing (I thought I had it figured out) until the surprise at the end.
At first, the number of characters felt overwhelming, but as the story went on, they became easier to keep track of. Some chapters felt a bit too long, which is a turnoff for me. Despite this, the book held my interest, and the twists kept me engaged. If you're looking for a mystery with a spooky atmosphere and a well-executed whodunit, this one is worth checking out!

I was really excited for this book. It’s set during one of my favorite times of the year, Halloween, and offered a spooky vibe.
A group of teenagers throw a party in the woods on Halloween against the backdrop of a spooky road, Sally in the Wood, where a girl was supposedly murdered and haunts the road.
The story is told from multiple perspectives; Rachel who is the school counselor, her ex-husband Ben who is a detective, and their daughter Ellie who goes to the school Rachel works at and attended the Halloween party and is acting very suspicious.
The book started strong and ended fairly strong. It kept me guessing till the end as to what really happened. The middle was a little slower and I wish it lent into the spooky vibes a bit more. With it being set at Halloween, it could have played into the spooky much more.
I like books told through multiple perspectives, but do wish we had a little more detail about the night in question throughout the book rather than it all just spilling out at the end. Ellie’s chapters tended to be much shorter than Rachel’s or Ben’s and I was left wanting more. Perhaps the authors intent, but I feel this could have been where some of those spooky vibes I wanted more of would fit.
Overall I would recommend it. I found myself caring about the characters and what happened and would happen to them.

Great book, difficult to put down, with a shocking, surprising ending. I sure didn't see that coming!
Rachel, a high school counselor lives on the school grounds where she works, with her daughter Ellie. Her husband, Ben, a police officer, lives on the opposite side of town with his girlfriend ... obviously not a good situation for the 3 of them. Things get much worse when a girl is killed on Halloween night, everyone is on edge. Superstition is rife as old stories emerge.
The writing is taut, suspenseful and it's impossible to put the book down, I loved it!

One Dark Night by Hannah Richell
A psychological thriller with the ability to suck in both adults and young adults; this family drama-filled, teenage nightmare of a book kept me on my toes the entire time!
Well past my teen years, it’s easy to look back and wonder why it is that teenagers seemingly feel immortal? I mean, after all, how often do we hear of teenage fun|parties gone wrong? Pretty much over and over again, am I right?
In this book, we are witness to the aftermath of teenage shenanigans gone terribly awry. Or is that was this is at all? Only after you have read this fast paced page-turner will you be able to decide for yourself.
Don’t forget to come back and let me know if or when you ever figured it all out!
Enjoy!

I did not expect the twist at the conclusion of this one! This is a fantastic mystery, suspense story that kept my mind working and my fingers turning the pages. What happens when a group of high school students go to the haunted woods for a party on Halloween, and at the end of the night, one girl is lying at the bottom of the structure? You'll have to read this to find out...believe me, you will not be disappointed with this book!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This book had me drawn in the first chapter and guessing until the very end! If you like mystery and ‘who did it’ books, this is a great read! I changed my mind through out the book on who did it and didn’t see the end coming.
The book kicks off right away with a creepy ghost story and the plot starts the first chapter. There’s no waiting for the mystery to start, which I love in a book. It starts off with a group of students at a party in the woods playing games (dare or dare anyone?) and telling the ghost story of Sally in the Woods. The next morning, one of the girls is found dead. The students and the school are in turmoil, scared that there’s a killer on the loose and of course the students all have secrets.
I liked how this book was written with linear time stamps to take you through the whole week following when the body was found- it made it easy to follow all the MCs and understand what they were going through. This book also does the perfect amount of character development so you understand the reason behind a lot of the behaviors of the MCs.

Thanks to the president of my book club, I'm getting into murder mysteries more. I do enjoy them and this was no different. I enjoyed how the woods played such a huge role in the story, almost a character itself. It added to the creepiness of the overall concept. And I did NOT know who the killer was until the end, which can be hard to do sometimes. Bravo.

A medium-paced book with a mix of plot & character driven mystery. It's a tense read. I thought I knew who the "bad guy" was, but I was wrong. The ending neatly tied up all the questions and the final twist made this a book I'd recommend to other mystery fans.

This quite the story! Private school spoiled kids, and folk story, don't mix. Children who don't like all rules for school 'then add Halloween to mix. What could go wrong? Enoy the twist as bad guys folk stories dark woods and teen party!

I had to give this book 4 stars. It's perfect. Takes place around one of my favorite holidays, Halloween, in a small English town. Great, spooky thriller with twists I honestly never saw coming. Must purchase the physical copy when it comes out for my bookshelf! :)

4 stars-Hannah Richell is a master at creating a dark and moody atmosphere. One Dark Night is set at an exclusive private school deep in the dark woods. Students from the school are out on Halloween in a folly near campus. Detective Ben Chase is called in because a girl is found murdered with words written all over her arms. He soon finds out that the dead girl is a student at the private school where his ex-wife is a counselor and his daughter is a student. Oh, and his daughter was at the party! The entire campus is interviewed and secrets come out. The author does an amazing job of capturing the feelings and thoughts of teenagers and brings this book to a strong conclusion with a couple of big plot twists that I did not see coming. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the arc.

this was a pretty average thriller experience for me. i enjoyed the small community, but the characters themselves were two dimensional and the plot was somewhat predictable.

Fantastic read! Most of the time I was on the edge of my seat. This book had as many twists and turns as the twisted curves of the roads of Sally in the woods. . Dark looming tower and Halloween frights add to the building suspense. Cozy up, settle in for a really enjoyable read.

This book was very good. From the mystery, mild horror and suspense to the twist at the end, I could not put it down. You grow to love the characters. I thought I had it figured out and I was wrong. Great work.

Thanks to Simon and Schuster for the advanced reader copy.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was an easy read and kept me guessing through the plot. I thought when I had reached about 80% of the way through I had it figured out but ended up surprised.
The novel begins with a death of a student at a small private school. Sarah's death occurred at a party in the middle of the night out in the woods. Investigations begin and Ellie, a student at the school, has her father working as a detective on the case and her mother working in the school as support for student. The plot thickens as Ellie lies to her parents about her whereabouts the evening of the party.
I really enjoyed the development of the characters. The author did a great job keeping me on the edge of my seat. I do wish the ending had not left me wondering where the story was going but maybe there will be a sequel?
Overall 3.5/5 stars

Teen years are hard enough without moving to a private costly boarding school. And to make it worse her mom works there. But it is her chance to follow her passion for art. Ellie slips out to go to a Halloween party where a student dies. The story follows the mystery of who kills and why. The book was interesting with a combination of mystery and the family and friend relationships. So glad I don't have to be a teen again. It is such a hard age.

4.5 stars for me!
This book had me hooked and every time I thought I knew what was going on, another twist proved me wrong! I loved it!
I’m excited to read more books from this author!
