This book is about one of the most important dates in history to remember. It is a day to remember and to use to look toward the future that was intended to be had. The book is a great tribute story to learn about the past injustices and has really impressive illustrations as well.

This picture book is gorgeous. The illustrations are soft and impressionistic, lending the whole subject a feeling of warmth and emotion, and the story ... well, suffice it to say that very few picture books out there have been published which celebrate Juneteenth specifically, even though there are a number which deal with slavery, civil rights, and the aftermath of liberation. The tone of this book is hopeful and optimistic, making it a great way to end a study unit which must necessarily explain or portray some difficult historical truths. This is not the book to teach those difficult historical truths, but rather to celebrate the end of a low point in American history (and perhaps frame a conversation about the repercussions and artifacts of that time we still deal with today).

Beautiful cover, beautiful cover, beautiful everything. This is one of those books I'd buy for my future kids.
