Great read from Brooke. Her shared experiences were relatable, even though she is a celebrity. I will be recommending this title to friends and female customers of a certain age group.
This book was extremely relatable to me. I am also a woman of a certain age. I have experienced so many of the things Brooke talked about. I love how she shares her outlook about women aging. Dint be afraid to stand up for yourself! Ask questions. Do what is of value to you. A great audiobook made even better because it was narrated by the author.
I have always found Brooke Shields fascinating and this memoir in her own voice is so enjoyable! I found her to be authentic and relatable (who knew?!) When Brooke talks about aging, she just tells it like it is without sugarcoating it and I feel that many women will appreciate that. Listening to this read by Brooke herself was a plus. She is really funny, which always adds to a memoir for me.
Brooke Shields wrote an incredible book and she is allowed to get old! I loved listening to it on audio. She is wise and funny.
Well done Brooke Shields. This is THE book that "women of a certain age", yes I am including myself, need to read/hear, So empowering. For some of us, these ideas, realizations and assertions come naturally, and for others- well we need encouragement. Ms. Shields gives us that and plenty more with a look into her hard won independence that continues to evolve. We are each a "work a progress" and we need to support each other. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself in this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the Advance Listeners Copy. And thank you to Brooke Shields' honest reflections and insight, with outstanding narration.
I have been a fan of Brooke Shields since I read her book, "On my Own," as a tween. I've always admired her and felt that she is a truly genuine person. This title definitely confirmed my suspicions negating my thoughts of what could I possibly have in common with such an iconic superstar. It turns out quite a bit. Brooke addresses the classic standard of aging for women vs. men. Men, who gray, develop a paunch, are, "distinguished;" while a woman who adopts these characteristics would, (gasp) "let herself go!" I wish I had read this book in my 30's to prepare for the challenges of my 50's. You would be astonished how many parallels there are between acting and many other careers, the challenges are similar which I found very surprising and refreshing. I highly recommend this memoir for any female 35 and older. Well done Brooke, very inspiring!
First, thank you to Macmillan Audio, the author, and NetGalley for allowing me to preview this title.
This audiobook is NOT an autobiography or Brooke Shield's memoir although she does bring a lot of her personal experiences in how she is getting older and how society is treating her. While she does often cite various studies, magazine articles, and websites, her mentions often feel like she is "cherry picking" what information she is including to make her point. While this is to be expected since she is making her point and not trying to be medically sound, I felt like things could have more to their story. That being said, her story is very relatable, as I am an aging woman as well. She makes mention of how aging women are "damned if you do and damned if you don't" in that we are criticized for looking older, and also criticized for having work done.
As for the audiobook itself, I feel like this might have been better as a physical book. She often spoke less like she was reading from a book and more like she was making a podcast. It was quite jarring at times and took away from the message.
Overall, this book fell flat for me. Even with the idea of "preaching to the choir" I still couldn't get into her story.
I loved this book! It made me laugh, yes, but mostly it pissed me off! She gives so many examples of times in her life when she has been discriminated against, disregarded, mistreated and even experienced medical malpractice it’s infuriating… but when you consider how many million other women experienced the very same things? It’s quite heartbreaking.
It’s actually much more than that though. It’s a celebration of midlife and of the female experience despite all of the many obstacles that have been put in our way.
I especially loved that this was an audiobook and I got to hear Brooke’s stories in her own voice. Thank you Brooke for speaking so eloquently for our generation of women.
And thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy!
I really enjoyed this memoir. Brooke Shields is very open and candid in the reflections about her life and aging. This was a very interesting and insightful book to read.
It was tolerable for the most part. Brooke Shields isn’t exactly the most relatable woman in the world, but the stories she shares are sometimes entertaining. Where the book lacks in connection it makes up for with informed-opinions and fact-based perspectives on being an aging woman. Worth the read but don’t expect to be wowed.
First, Brooke Shields is an incredible narrator. I am so glad I listened to this book, because she does an amazing job reading it and I will be looking for other audio books she’s read.
Second, I know this book is targeting a slightly older audience than me… and while I’m slightly younger than the target audience of this book, so much of Brooke’s book resonated with me. Of course I’m not famous or rich or or or… but her family life, interactions with her kids, aging, and learning to NGAF — yes ma’am. You’re nailing it.
Shields really did the research here to nail home the points she wants to emphasize. Highly recommend this book for women of any age who are going through the teen years with kids, approaching forty (apparently we hit happiness rock bottom and then climb on out!), or just love Brooke Shields. She may be a national treasure.

I listened to Brooke Shields’s narration of this book. I enjoyed her voice. It was like you are listening to a friend. I loved her perspective on life. As she aged, she learned how to deal with with people better and not only worry about what they might think. The parts on self-advocacy for your healthcare and with healthcare professionals were important to know and can apply to yourself. There were a few funny and heartfelt moments.
For a woman who grew up in the spotlight, Brooke Shields has somehow remained normal and even skews towards comfortably awkward. She doesn’t seem to be playing any games, or even care very much if you love her. When it comes to celebrities, this is exactly one I want to invest my time in.
I found Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old warm, and teary at times. She’s lived with a controlling mother and ex-husband. She’s survived post-partum depression and thrived. Now her children have grown and are leaving the nest. Heads are turning at them far more than they are Brooke herself. Growing old is something celebrities whitewash and/or hide. In contrast, I found listening to Brooke to be quite similar to listening to a friend. I didn’t catch a whiff of falseness, and related to her quite well. I’ve already recommended this to a few friends and patrons, and been thanked twice already.
I listened to the audio version, which I recommend as it’s read by the author. Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for granting access to an advanced audio copy in response to my request.
The first word that comes to mind after reading this is validation. Brooke Shields’ words are powerful, reassuring, and relatable. “ I am woman, hear me MORE,” she proclaims, and I love it! This is an important read for all women, especially those like me who are of a certain age. If you have ever felt invisible, unheard, and overlooked this book will resonate with you and empower you. The prologue brought tears to my eyes as I nodded in agreement. Very powerful and needed in my aging life. Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my audiobook. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Brooke Shields is not Allowed to Get Old, by Brooke Shields, is a memoir about Shields’s life as a middle aged woman. She has written previous books about postpartum depression and her relationship with her mother but this book centers around how her life has changed with aging- perimenopause, menopause, the double standard with women and men aging, empty nesting, and how she has become more empowered and confident in her 50’s. She does so with many many personal stories, lots of humor and quite a bit of citing evidence. Though some parts may seem privileged, I think it also reads as very down to earth and relatable. She is honest and vulnerable and I think any woman from their 40’s and up will find something that resonates within themselves in this. Highly recommended as the audiobook version since Shields narrates this herself. Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my ARC.

Brooke Shields is how old?! Brooke takes on the trials of aging for women in her newest book. She is 59 year old and proud of where she is in life and not about to let anyone take that away from her. She humorously takes on topics women of a "certain age" are enduring everyday, from kids leaving for college, menopause, plastic surgery, injuries, ageism, to starting a new career she is brutally honest and bears her soul about the experiences she has been through. She makes it very clear this is not an actress telling someone else how to live their lives, she is just sharing her experiences and opinions on these universal topics hoping to help. Many topics she brings to the forefront are conversations that should be had in our society without judgement, for example her discussion on menopause and the lack of information and treatments available. She tackles every issue with her honesty and self-deprecating humor which keeps heavy topics light. Her tone is conversational and easy to follow. I had the audio version read by Brooke which was very enjoyable to hear her thoughts and emotions from her own voice. She is a great storyteller, funny (hello Bradley Cooper in the back of an ambulance) and charming. I highly recommend this book for "women of a certain age" and anyone else who enjoys a conversation about female centered topics.
I bawled at parts of this book. I’m at the phase where my kids don’t need me as much so hearing from Brooke Shields that she went through the same thing and came through the other side was encouraging. I’m glad I read it before I hit menopause and empty nest.
I loved that Brooke narrated this herself. She did a great wonderful job.
A vulnerable look at aging. Brooke is extremely honest about aspects of her life and how she perceives society is looking at her. She offers lots of case studies to validate claims presented in the book. Overall, I found the audiobook an interesting take on midlife from a beautiful woman. Brook’s narration also adds another level of credibility.
Thank you #NetGalley, #MacmillanAudio, #BrookeShields and #BrookeShieldsisNotAllowedtoGetOld for the audiobook for my honest review.
Not sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed this. I am woman, hear me roar. I appreciated the chapter on confidence. You could tell that Brooke Shields has grown and done the work. Now I need to watch her documentary.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for the ALC.
An excellent read for this forty-something mother! This one really resonated with me. So much so, that I went off to check out one of Shields' older books. Loved it!
