Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book starts with such a bang! Beth wakes up in a hospital with no idea what happened to her. The doctors bring in her husband, who she has no recollection of. She thinks it is 5 years earlier, which means no memory of her husband, living in London or having twins. The storyline kept me engaged for the book's first part, and I loved it until I didn't. Beth's friendship with Dee fell flat, and I was flabbergasted when I got to the end. I had so many more questions and felt the author just gave up. I was expecting a final twist for sure!
I would still recommend this book, though, as the storyline was interesting, and it was an easy read.
This book had me on the edge of my seat and I just couldn't put it down. It was so atmospheric and full of suspense ans tension with every twist hitting me like a brick to the face. I loved it
A woman wakes after a car crash with no memory and rightfully doubts everyone around her. Sorting out the truth tellers and the liars is tricky, but engaging. I needed to read it; needed to know who was lying. I have one qualm which I won't mention because--spoilers! I read a lot of thrillers, or domestic suspense, and this one gave unexpected moments.
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the arc. Alison Stockham is a new author to me, but I'll be looking for her back list.
This thriller was a bit out of my comfort zone, as I haven’t read one in a bit. However this book was decent, and I took a chance on it. This book has great potential but I don’t think I was the target demographic for it.
What a great story! As someone who’s dealt with domestic abuse it was written very well and even with my experience of now knowing the signs your writing still had me on a rollercoaster and second guessing myself! The pacing of the story and the reveals was excellent and the character were loveable and relatable, except rob of course 😂. I really enjoyed it
Beth wakes up from a coma and doesn't recognize the man they say is her husband. She may not recognize him, but why does he make her feel uneasy? "The Man She Married" takes us on a wild ride as Beth is determined to find out what happened in the years missing from her memory. With twists throughout that made me audibly gasp, this book will surely suck readers in.
When Beth awakens after an accident having lost part of her memory, she is unable to piece together events of the last 5 years which apparently include a move from Australia to the UK and a marriage!
The man introduced as her husband, Rob, stranger to her. Yet as the days pass, she cannot help feeling increasingly uncomfortable with him. Swinging between mistrust towards Rob and self blame for her mistrust, Beth must find out what the real story is. But who can she turn to?
Atmospheric and convincing, the story comes with an unexpected twist in the tale.
I really enjoyed reading an arc of this book! The premise: You wake up with no memories, all you know is he is lying. So good.
I absolutely loved the story of our main character who wakes up in the hospital after being in a coma, but has lost 4-5 years of memories. Her husband that she does not remember aide's in recovery…
This was a fun story as our main character pieces together the life she was living. While I enjoyed the premise, in practicality much of the story fell apart for me. A super controlling husband hiding much of their former life leaves her alone for hours on end. It took me out of the story because it just turned so unbeatable unfortunately. That aside, this was a quick, fun read.
A creepy and gripping thriller that keeps you wondering what exactly is going on. Lots of shocks, a great read!
Beth wakes up in the hospital with amnesia after being in a car accident. The last 5 years are missing from her memory, she isn't where she thinks she is and she doesn't know the people around her including her husband Rob,
This is a tense read filled with twists and drama.
It is a good read and I enjoyed my reading time. I am already looking forward to what comes next from this author.
1.5 stars rounded up to 2. Looks like I have an outlier opinion. This is a new to me author. I'll start by saying my opinions on this book are mine alone. The low rating doesn't mean it was a bad book. It just wasn't a fit for me. Beth wakes up in the hospital after being in a car accident. She has retrograde amnesia. She thinks it's 2019 and she thinks she's 24. She's missing 5 years from her life. She also thinks she's in Australia where she lived and grew up. Instead, she is in the UK and finds out she is married. She has no recollection of this. Her husband, Rob, seems caring at the hospital, but Beth doesn't quite feel comfortable around him. Eventually, she is well enough to go home. She doesn't recognize anything, but begins getting small flashbacks, and notices Rob has quite a temper that he can turn on and off very quickly.
That's all I can say about the plot because the next part is the ending. Yes, this went on through the whole book. Beth wondering who Rob was. Rob being mean. When I say this was a slow burn, I mean it was tortoise paced. Once I finally got to the ending, it fell totally flat with me. I was expecting something sort of big at the end for all that reading but BAM it was over.
I found all of the characters unlikable. Beth has a friend named Dee and every 5th word out of Dee's mouth is Babe. Rob calls Beth Pooks or Pookie. Over and over. Yes, it's nitpicky, but it got on my nerves. Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it. I'm sorry to say I do not recommend this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this Advanced Reader’s Copy of The Man She Married by Alison Stockham due to be published January 20, 2025.
One moment Beth was living her life – the next she woke up in a hospital with years of her life missing. The man next to her – Rob, her husband – she doesn’t remember marrying him or anything about him. Why does everything and everyone seem so unfamiliar? Is Rob her friend or her enemy? Where are her family members and friends?
This one had me hooked from the beginning – going back and forth and trying to decide if Rob was the good guy or the bad guy. The storyline and characters were wonderful and made me want to read fast to see what happened at the end. It will not be my last Alison Stockham book!

This book was sooooo good!!! It had so many twists and turns, and you feel tense and worry the whole time, worrying for this woman. I love how suspenseful this book was, it kept me hooked from the very beginning. I do like the way this book ended, and how it was written!!
Thank you to NetGalley, to the author, and to the publisher for this complementary ARC in exchange for my honest review!!!
4 star read! Beth wakes up in a British hospital next to her husband, Rob. Beth has no recollection of the past 5 years. Beths gut is telling her something isn’t right.
This was my first Alison Stockman book and it has me eager to read more. Her writing had me consumed from the first page with so many twist and turns.
Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for my very first ARC.
Beth wakes up in the hospital after being in a car accident. She thinks she lives with her parents in Australia, but the doctor tells her she lives in England with her husband. Beth has no recollection of this man and does not want to go with him. As time goes on, she has flashbacks and finds things at the house that are curious to her. She eventually finds something of hers that shows some light into her past. Beth finds out all these things her husband has been keeping from her. Can Beth get out before something bad happens? This was probably her best book so far.
3.5 stars - I was intrigued by the storyline of this one, Beth wakes up in hospital - she thinks she is in Australia but she has forgotten the last 5 years and is actually in England and married to a British guy. I felt Beth's pain and confusion as someone who moved to England from New Zealand and now has a British husband I cannot image how it would feel to completely forget the move!
The storyline kept me really engaged for the first 70%, and the author did a good job of revealing details as it went along, enough to keep you engaged but not enough to satisfy all your questions.
I found the overuse of pet names really annoying, 'babe' was used far too many times. But this is a minor gripe. Overall, I was disappointed in the ending, I was expecting a final twist or reveal but it never came and then all of a sudden it was the end. But all in all I still really enjoyed the book and would recommend as an easy to read thriller.
Beth wakes up in the hospital after being in a horrible car accident. Her doctor explains she appears to be suffering from retrograde amnesia due to the fact she believes it's the year 2019. In Beth's mind, she's 24 years old, working at a local café in Australia, living with her parents. She's shocked when she's told it's actually 2024...and that she's in England...and her husband has been waiting for her to wake up.
Beth has lost the previous five years and has absolutely no recollection of this man at her bedside claiming to be her husband, Rob.
However, when Rob takes Beth home she does have a few moments where her actions are automatic, knowing where things are without having to think about it.
As she recovers, she seeks answers about the life she can't remember, which curiously makes Rob angry. He brushes his behavior off as wanting to take care of her, reminding her she needs to rest and that she needs time to allow the memories to come back to her organically.
But Beth knows she's always been independent, logical, and searches for answers anyway. Finding a phone, she's able to log in and starts to search for herself. She learns a mother of two children was also involved in the same crash as her; something that absolutely devastates her. Maybe Rob was right and the accident was too horrific to force the memories to come; her brain doesn't seem ready to process what happened.
As Beth continues to recover, she's shocked at the version of herself Rob claims she was; her closet doesn't contain clothes she'd ever wear; her extremely sparse social media shows pictures of things she'd never do, let alone post.
Isolated and feeling completely alone, Beth is determined to put the pieces of her life together with or without Rob's help but Beth doesn't know who she can turn...or who she can trust.
This is the first book I've read by Alison Stockham but I've immediately added her others to my ever-growing TBR list. This was a four star read and one I would highly encourage fellow thriller fans to check out!
,My husband – looks familiar, but I can't remember marrying him?
Its difficult to get your head around and even harder to imagine how you would feel.
Great storyline and well written characters.
Overall a good domestic drama.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Beth’s life is turned upside down when she wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of the past five years. The man by her bedside claims to be her husband but she doesn't remember him or her move from Australia to England. He takes her home but it doesn't feel like home. His smile is cold, his touch is cruel—and Beth’s instincts scream that she’s in danger.
The portrayal of domestic violence and coercive control is handled with care and nuance, Beth’s story is deeply impactful. The writing is delicate yet unflinching, bringing the tension and danger of Beth’s situation to life.
This dark, twisty narrative will have readers questioning who to trust and rooting for Beth’s courage and determination.
Thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for The Man She Married. I was anxious for so much of this book and I was rooting for Beth Alllll the way. It got weird with Dee if she said babe one more time ugh. My most anxious part of the book is when they met at the house, I kept thinking Rob was coming back. The ending was not great, didn’t like it but overall a heart pounding plot.
