There are many things an English lord might encounter on the grounds of his wintry estate. Trees. Birds. Perhaps a wandering gamekeeper. Instead, the Earl of Belhaven finds a woman in the snow, unconscious and nearly frozen to death. Then her luminous gray eyes open just long enough for her to plead, “Don’t let them get me.”
Now Jasper Maycott has his hands full with a woman who has absolutely no memory of who she is or where she came from—to say nothing of her name! Just a gold ring, some fine clothes, and a penchant for pert conversation. But while “Jane” dresses and speaks quite like a lady, Jasper can’t make any assumptions. After all, she could be a crafty fortune hunter...albeit a charming and unutterably beautiful one.
Only there’s no room for romantic love in the Earl of Belhaven’s world. There is just grim duty, a lingering sense of loss, and the knowledge that love—in any form—can only bring heartbreak in its wake.
But while a lady should know better, the heart heeds no rules...even if its every beat portends the danger she was running from.
It was such a sweet and short story. The perfect program for an easy sunday with some tea and a piece of cake.
Loved this preview of this new historical romance. Jasper seems like the perfect gruff yet tender male lead. I am very interested in reading the final book!
This was a strong preview in this romance novel, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall concept for this. It left me wanting to read the full book and thought it worked as a romance novel. Emma Theriault wrote this perfectly and am excited for more.
Okay so I was well aware this was a preview but now I’m so sad because the first five chapters had me hooked! I’ve never read a book like this before but as a lover of Bridgerton and Downton Abbey, it reeled me in quickly.
The mystery surrounding what has happened to our MFC, the allure of the MMC and the fun, playful and strong women who are the supporting characters thus far are going to make for a fun, entertaining story.
I’m itching to get my hands on the full book so I can continue on with this amazing read!
Preview Review
I just got to read a preview (thank you so much to NetGalley) and I am absolute so invested in this story.
Who is she?
Is he going to break his iciness?
What is she running from?
The family is endearing and already I can tell the banter and wit is great. I’ve laughs a few times already.
Oh I’m so here for this and I can’t wait to get a copy and finish this story!
Thanks NetGalley for allowing me to read a preview . This is my honest opinion.
*Thank you to Entangled Publishing for this ARC*
I don't read a lot of historical romance, but I do LOVE Jane Austen and Bridgerton, so was excited to receive this book. The story, especially the romance, was a super slow burn - and felt like it took forever to get there. There was a lot of push and pull between the MMC and FMC, and whilst I enjoyed both characters, it was a LOT.
I did enjoy the plot line, a young lady is found unconscious and rescued, she doesn't remember who she is etc, this was well done, I enjoyed that aspect of the plot and the developing relationship between "Jane", Jasper and the family. Overall if I think if you enjoy the JA/Bridgerton vibe, you'll enjoy this book and its worth picking up! Thanks Entangled for letting me enjoy this book!
Engaging start to the story. Good character development and very period appropriate! Can't wait to read the rest!
Thank you for the ARC preview!
I thoroughly enjoyed a five chapter preview of A Lady Would Know Better.
The writing is well paced and engaging, and I loved meeting Lord Jasper and the rest of the Maycotts. The premise of the isolated manor and the mysterious young lady with amnesia, combined with a family reeling from a terrible loss, makes for compelling and engaging reading. There’s a lovely mix of wit, mystery and emotion in the narrative, and a very much look forward to reading more.
Thank you Entangled Publishing for a preview of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.
I really liked this book. I love a good amnesia trope and realistic depictions of emotions. I will write a more detailed review later, but good job!
"Captivating Characters and Intriguing Plot Twists—A Must-Read!"
I just finished previewing Emma Theriault's A Lady Would Know Better, and I was drawn in from the very first page! The vibrant characters felt so real and engaging that I could easily imagine sharing a cup of coffee with them, completely at ease. The book masterfully wove suspense, intrigue, and captivating plot twists, that kept me hooked and eager to read more.
One aspect that could enhance the reading experience is the transition into Chapter 3. Since the female protagonist doesn’t have a name yet due to her amnesia, it might help to include a marker like “No Name” to signal the shift in perspective from Jasper’s point of view. That said, starting chapter 5 with her chosen name was beautifully handled and added to the emotional depth.
Overall, this book has strong potential in the historical romance genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the full story!
I read the first 50 pages free on NetGalley. I am looking forward to continuing this book!
So far it is a fairly fast-paced storyline, with amusing and likeable characters. I can not comment on whether it was historically accurate or not, however it was the perfect book to start off my historical romance journey. The writing style was fantastic - this comes from someone who finds it hard diving into third person books - and easy to follow along.
I read this preview of 50 pages and loved every page! Cannot wait til I get my hands on the rest of this truly wonderful gem!
The banter was superb, the romance swoony and the mystery had me hooked from the start...
5 stars!!!
Read this; I'm sure you'll love it too!
I love the amnesia trope. It was fast pace enough to hook you into the story. The only gripe I had with the preview was that there was a lot of trauma-dumping straight of the bat. I’d like it better if learn all the information as we proceed with story instead in the first chapter.
I'm hooked! Amnesia plot with a Bridgerton-esque family (no really, this time), with a second son who's become Earl of Belhaven. Jasper is carrying all the responsibility on his shoulders after the death of his mother and brother. He and his sisters discover an injured woman on their property and bring her in to recover, just tn time for their aunt to arrive from France. Who is she? Why was she at Mulgrave Hall? Does she want from the Belhavens? Can't wait to read more!
Is this really Emma Therialut’s historical romance debut? Because this preview is very promising and I really like the writing and the glimpses we get about the characters. Our amnesiac leading lady seems charming. The leading man is a brooding “sad boi” but he is not mean or an “alpha hole” who uses his circumstances as an excuse to be awful etc. And the side characters also give off good vibes. There is enough mystery to keep one intrigued, I can’t wait for the release of this story.
This was a fun preview of A Lady Would Know Better. I hope to read the entire book when it is available.
I read the preview for A Lady Would Know Better and it sounds like this book is going to be so fun. I can’t wait for the rest.
Jasper is the second son—he was supposed to have a life of idle pleasure, followed by some sort of career of his choosing. Instead he's the latest Earl of Belhaven, struggling to keep it together for his remaining family and for his peasants* on his land. He's not prepared for a bloodied and unconscious stranger to land on his proverbial doorstep in the middle of winter...
...but now that she's here, she just might be the best thing that has happened to Jasper and his family in more than a year.
If, that is, she can remember who she is. Or what she was running from. Or whom...
I only read a sampler, but this is clearly going to be an entertaining and fast-paced romp. Jasper is a wee bit of a tool at times, but he's a *gallant* tool, and...well, he does have some reasons to be stressed. The characters display what I suspect is an unrealistic level of feminism and ideas about science for the time, but the sampler does an annoyingly good job of making me wonder about "Jane's" background", and I'm looking forward to seeing where the plot goes. I'm also quite enjoying the aunt
This looks like it will be a great deal of fun—pointed but not taking itself too seriously. I'll have to keep an eye out for it in January.
*My word, not the book's
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing this preview through NetGalley.
**A Lady Would Know Better: A Captivating Read on a Chilly Day!**
I just finished previewing Emma Theriault’s *A Lady Would Know Better*, and let me tell you—it's the perfect escape from the winter chill! ❤️🔥
Meet Jasper Maycott, a charming gentleman who’s been living the easy life as the Spare in the well-known "Heir and a Spare" duo. But after a string of heartbreaking losses—his beloved fiancée, his parents, and his older brother—Jasper finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the role of the Earl of Belhaven. It’s a title he never thought he'd have to shoulder, and one he struggles with while vowing to keep his grieving heart from loving again. Instead, he dedicates himself to caring for his family and maintaining the family estate, Mulgrave Hall.
On what should be a somber day commemorating their mother's birthday, Jasper and his sisters stumble upon a mysterious woman—injured and disoriented—who has been thrown from her horse at Mulgrave. This stranger, who adopts the name Jane until her memory returns, is clearly in distress. But who is she, and what danger is she fleeing?
From the very first encounter, the chemistry between Jasper and Jane is palpable. Jane embodies a spirit that challenges Jasper to lower his defenses, while Jasper appears to be the heroic figure Jane desperately needs.
I’m utterly captivated and can't wait to dive deeper into this story! It beautifully blends the elegance of Austen with the vibrancy of Bridgerton, delivering a journey of romance and self-discovery. The tension between Jasper and Jane has me on the edge of my seat, and I’m eager to see how their intertwined fates unfold as they uncover the truth about each other—and what Jane learns about herself!
