This comprehensive guide is more than just sex ed - it is equally a guide to our bodies, relationships, and selves. As a starting point, it takes the status quo assumptions that have dominated our society's ways of thinking about sex in the past. But it breaks these apart by introducing concepts and vocabulary that challenge norms and offer new ways of envisioning and understanding our selves and the world we live in. What I particularly appreciated about the book was it's explicit and intentional consideration of differences - not just sexuality and gender, but neurodiversity, dis/ability and other types of differences. This book is a refreshing starting place for folks interested in broadening the way they think about sex.

If I had the money, I would buy a copy of this book for every young person in the United States. Author Dee Whitnell is spot on when writing, "Many of us either received very poor sex ed, or no sex ed." Whitnell gives us a relatable, approachable book that is an excellent addition to books like ALL ABOUT S.E.X.: THE SCARLETEEN BOOK by Heather Corinna. Both Corinna and Whitnell's books are inclusive of a range of sexualities and genders and I especially appreciate how BEYOND BANANAS AND CONDOMS is constructed around "beyond." Three great examples of how this approach creates a welcoming, open structure are the chapter titles "Beyond Man and Woman," "Beyond Straight and Gay," and "Beyond P in V." I plan to use this book to supplement my literary examples for an *adult* class I'll be teaching on writing sex scenes this summer.

Thank you NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishing for the ARC!

Ooofff, I LOVED this book! My Banned Books Club covered 'This Book is Gay' last June for Pride, and I kept thinking that this is what I was expecting with that book! This is the ultimate deep dive in the queer sex ed class we never got, and I feel like I would have realized my own queerness earlier if this information had been available. As a late in life lesbian, I am not very familiar with comphet, and this book helped me further explore the aspects of my own queerness and identity.
I know this book is adult, but I can't help but feel (much to the fear of the right) that teens and young adults could benefit from this book.
This also acts as a dictionary/encyclopedia for those wondering what all the different identity terms mean! I cannot express enough how comprehensive this book is.
Brava and I can't wait to get a title for our library!

Having previously taught Sex and Health PSHE to secondary school pupils and sixth former, I was super intrigued and interested in this book. I personally enjoyed teaching these lessons, not finding them embarrassing at all - but I know a lot of my fellow teachers absolutely hated just the thought of teaching lessons on these topics.
This book is brilliant! It is excellent for teachers who are facilitating lessons, but also good for young people too. Hey, I'm mid thirties and still learnt something new!
Really humorous writing style from Dee Whitnell, making the topics super accessible and super interesting to read too.

100% recommend!!

This is a super inclusive and educational book. The tone is really casual and conversational which immediately eased me into topics which normally make me feel uncomfortable. The first half of the book which explored and explained different genders and sexualities was definitely something I needed when I was beginning to learn about sex and my only book was pushing a very cis, heterosexual narrative. As the book continues, there are definitely topics that are maybe less appropriate for younger readers (maybe for 14+). But overall this book has something for people of most ages that need sex education. I definitely learnt a few new things.
