In How to Be Hakuna Matata, Zeha Tembo offers readers a heartfelt journey through the wisdom of Swahili proverbs, or methali. Drawing from her Kenyan heritage, Tembo explores themes of resilience, self-acceptance, and kindness, encouraging readers to embrace a "no worries" approach to life. Through personal anecdotes and cultural insights, she illustrates how these age-old sayings can provide guidance and perspective in the modern world.

This 80-page book serves as both a cultural exploration and a motivational guide, making it an enriching read for those interested in African proverbs, personal development, or cross-cultural understanding. Tembo's engaging narrative invites readers to reflect on their own lives and consider the timeless wisdom that can be found in the words of the past.

Book Review: How to be Hakuna Matata

How to be Hakuna Matata is a gentle and sweet read, offering a curated selection of Swahili proverbs. While reading about these proverbs was interesting and provided insight into cultural wisdom, I didn’t find the book particularly inspiring or motivating.

I had requested this book out of curiosity, hoping it would present a self-help approach grounded in Africanness. However, it turned out to be more of a collection of proverbs rather than a guide with personal application or practical advice. Without deeper context or interpretation, the proverbs felt disconnected from real-life scenarios, which left me wanting more substance.

This is the kind of book that would look lovely on a coffee table—something to browse through casually—but not one I found especially useful. In truth, many of the proverbs could probably be found online with minimal effort, which diminishes its uniqueness as a resource.

In summary, How to be Hakuna Matata is a quick and pleasant read, but it didn’t meet my expectations. While it might appeal to those seeking a light introduction to Swahili proverbs, it’s not something I’d personally recommend purchasing.
