Thank you to Dreamscape for the ALC, all opinions are my own.
Tessa returns to her hometown after the death of her high school best friend. While there she starts unraveling secrets as we bounce back and forth between the past and present day. I was a little bored the first 1/3 or so but once the action started it got a lot more interesting with a very surprising grand reveal.
I really enjoyed the dual narration and they kept the pace good and the story interesting.
I went into this thinking it was a thriller but it definitely is more of a romantic suspense or a romance with a bit of thriller and mystery in there. I liked this! I wish the plot had moved a bit faster but the author definitely built some nice tension between the MC and the love interest. I listened to this by audiobook and thought the narrators did a great job bringing the characters and story to life.

Thank you @NetGalley and @DreamScapeMedia for the ARC. I did not see the end coming or some of the twist this story went in to. Tessa returns home to check on her mom who has been in a coma. Her best friend is murdered and it was not the town first case. When Tessa was young two sets of mother and daughter were also murdered and the murderer never found. Tessa wants answers and the only one who can give them is her old boyfriend who ghosted her when he left for college. This was a great book to listen to, I enjoyed the narrators.
Kiersten Modglin is an autoread author of mine and I LOVED THIS! Her books are so bingeable and this one was no different! Thank you so much to netgalley for the ALC!
I will read every Kiersten Modglin book thrown at me til the end of time... BUT this one was not my favorite. I would not by any means say it was bad, but it just didn't hit the same as her other books. Usually, the plot twists are pretty unpredictable but I feel like I guessed the ending too early on. Maybe it was the fact that the time jumps jumped back to early teen years a lot but, I almost feel like this novel leaned a little "high school" YA. If it weren't for the brief spicy scenes, I'm pretty sure this is something I would've picked up and loved when I was in high school.
I did really love the romance aspect of this with the second chance romance trope. It one of my favorite romance tropes for sure and I always love a romantic thriller.
Anything by Kiersten is always a banger! This 10/10 audio every one should listen! I loved the story the plot and the characters so so much
I wish I knew this was a romantic thriller going in. I was expecting a psychological thriller like other Modglin books so this one threw me off. It was enjoyable but really not my style.
I did it, I hopped on the Kiersten Modglin train.
I absolutely LOVE thrillers but when you have read as many as I have, they tend to blur together. I typically gravitate toward plots I haven't heard before and when I read the description for Where the Darkness Goes, I knew this would be exactly what I was looking for.
This book was executed and narrated with perfection.
I was instantly consumed and could not press pause for even a minute.
There is a reason why fans love Modglin and Where the Darkness Goes, proves everything everyone says about her correct... She is a true mastermind when it comes to curating the most unputdownable books.
Kudos!
Check. out this teaser :
Tessa Becker has several reasons to never return to her hometown:
She will have to face the man who shattered her heart.
She is terrified to confront her ailing mother’s condition.
That is where the murders happened.
Tessa Becker must return home for one reason and one reason alone:
Someone else is dead and it’s time to finally learn the truth.
Ever since the first murder, Tessa’s once charming and safe hometown has been infected with suspicion and fear. Back then accusations were made in whispers, but without proof, the killer still walks free. And now it’s possible they’ve struck again.
If things weren’t complicated enough, Tessa finds herself forced to stay with the one man she had hoped to avoid. Years ago, Garrett Campbell held her heart until he crushed it. Now, he’s a stranger. He’s also her brother’s best friend.
In an all-too-familiar place filled with secrets and devastating loss—surrounded by people and memories she’d rather forget—Tessa will have to discover the truth about what happened back then, and the threat it poses to the town and the ones she loves most before it’s too late.
I did not expect the amount of romance and spice that was in this book! While this book was a bit different than the others that I have read by Kiersten Modglin, (less mystery/thriller, way more romance) I still enjoyed it a lot. I found Tessa and Garrett to both be interesting characters with believable chemistry. There are a a few romance tropes at play here too: second chance romance, brother's best friend, small town romance.
I wish that this book was marketed more as a romance rather than a mystery, but overall I enjoyed the story. This is a solid book and One of my favorites by KMod. I also LOVED the narrators in this. Thank you so much to Netgalley and Dreamscape media for this arc!
While I’ve only read a couple books by this author it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Yes it’s dark and twisty like her previous works, it was also more heavily romantic than I would have thought.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing just a warning to those who want pure spooky and no swoony
I love Kiersten Modglin books. Where Darkness Goes was a great romantic thriller. Had me invested and loved all the twists.
3.5 stars
I have read several Kiersten Modglin books and this one didn’t quite feel like the other books she has written. This was more of a YA romance book with some thriller pieces sprinkled throughout the book.
Don’t get me wrong, this book was pretty good, but I struggled with it at times and I didn’t realize I was going to be reading a heavy romance book.
Some of the dialogue and situations that happened in this book were very cringey. It was really awkward to listen to a few times though out the book. I literally made a face when I heard them.
Thanks NetGalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
Ahh I loved this! I love Kiersten Modglin’s romantic thrillers so much. Hemlock is one of my favorites from her, and this one was just as great! Where the Darkness Goes is fast paced with a compelling mystery, as well as a great romance.
Tessa returns home to attend a funeral and realizes that the murders that happened when she was a teenager are happening again. While in town, she’s forced to stay with the man who broke her heart years ago. Tessa must navigate her past and uncover secrets to learn the truth and possibly get a second chance at love.
I was absolutely invested in the romance and wanting to know why Garett ended things with Tessa, but I was equally invested in the overall mystery and murders. I was absolutely not expecting the reveal at all. This book was fast paced, and I listened to almost all of it in one sitting because I could not stop. Also, the narrators did an amazing job.
Where the Darkness Goes is perfect for anyone who loves romance (especially second chance romance) but wants a little added mystery.
This was the first book I have read of Kiersten Modglin. It was mysterious and twisty. There are times I just wanted to shake the characters and say "just tell her already". I find I don't have a tolerance for books where people just won't admit things or drag things on forever. There were lots of twists and turns and I didn't see the true culprit until it was shown. Even when it was first hinted, I still thought it was going another way.
Oh man, there were so many twists in this story, and every single time I thought I had it figured out, Kiersten Modglin proved me wrong! This is the second Kiersten Modglin book I have read and it will not be the last.
Ellie Gossage and Jay Myers did a great job narrating this novel. I loved the alternating narration.

I have grown to love Kiersten Modglin’s thrillers and learned to be leery of her romantic thrillers. They can be a bit much on the spice level for me, but I have listened to enough of hers to know what to expect. If Modglin writes it them most likely I will want to listen to it! And I am working on her back log of titles she has written. She just keeps writing more and more books!
We have Tessa who has to come ‘home again’ IE: the place where she grew up. She comes across old memories and old people from that previous life. This includes Garrett who broke her heart all those years ago. And get this: Garrett is her brother’s best friend.
We have a romantic thriller here with some smut in it. I was in this book for the thriller parts and we had some! The twist ending and twist villain with the motive was a bit unbelievable and ‘off the rails’ for me. This one just wasn’t really for me. After this one, I will keep listening/reading Modglin (As she is a must read) but will stay away from her romantic thrillers.
Many thanks to the publisher for granting me a copy to listen to and review!
This was okay. I think the title and cover made it seem darker than the book. I also really struggled to care about the characters despite the interesting premise.
I didn’t really care for this book unfortunately. It was just ok. I typically like her books, as they are good thriller and mystery reads.
This was my first Modglin book and I see why people are obsessed. This has all the genres I love - mystery, thriller and some romance. The atmosphere was super eerie and constricting and kept me on edge. The brother’s best friend storyline worked well and had me interested to see what happened all those years ago. The narration was strong and I enjoyed the dual POVs.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrators were fantastic! I was hooked from the first chapter and listened to it pretty much straight through. I loved the dual POVs and timelines. I’m a huge fan of the author and highly recommend this book as well as the rest of her books!
