(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)
In this new, fast-paced historical fiction title, Captain Esmond Clyde-Dalton prepares to wed his love. But after she is incarcerated, he is quickly cast into a journey of mystery, deceit and duplicity. Readers will be drawn to the diverse cast of characters and will almost immediately become tangled in a web of conspiracy and treason as the endearing Esmond tries to clear his name as a rebel invasion looms over Edinburgh.

This is the second book in the Markinch series by S.J. Garland. The first book was a 4-star read and this book is nearly as good as its predecessor.
What's to love: the action and mystery. This was quite the page-turner as it unfolded. The plotpoints - conspiracy, treason, deceit - were strong enough to keep me reading. Some of the action sequences were also very well done. I have to credit the author for all of those things.
What's not to love: for me, it was always going to be touch-and-go with how the romance would play out. For me, there was just a bit too much of the "will they, won't they?" scenario. With all the other stuff going on, I think this would have just been better letting it develop organically and not trying to "force" the romance into the story.
Overall, though, this is still a fine novel - and follow-up in the series. I do recommend it!
