thank you, NetGalley for an advanced ALC of this book
( I want to state that I do not and will never support any violence, abuse or anything on a person or animal... my review here is on whay I have read).
I have never followed gypsy rose and all the details but I do love biographies and memiors so I was interested in reading this to see things from her eyes.
unfortunately this book felt more like a rambling of woe always me as well as it felt she was plodding with the audience to see her in a different light rather then just telling the unfortunate events of her life... also this book didn't really speak much about gypsy but rather on her mother & how she was,her past, the relationships she had and also allot about sexual suggested things with her etc.
this didn't at all set the scene nor set anything for what I think gypsy was trying to get over in these pages 🤔, I don't think this book will help in her getting tje support or to be seen differently like she wants but instead just digs her whole deeper.
I expected more from this book and was disappointed. Lots of mixed feelings. It’s definitely hard to rate a book like this.
This audiobook was so interesting! To hear the story from Gypsy's point of view, and not necessarily a true crime perspective. It makes you really think about how the true crime stories we consume are about very real people. I have seen a lot of people say that some of the things in this book don't agree with things she has said in her previous book, but I didn't read that so I can't speak to that. It might be worth reading with caution.
I appreciated that listening to this you learned a lot more about Gypsy and her mom compared to what many know from ‘The Act’. I was skeptical as I’m not a fan of the media / pop culture celebrating Gypsy post-freedom but respect her story. Detailed, difficult and deliberate book.
This book was great. As a true crime aficionado and a follower of Gypsy Rose's case, I was eager to get my hands on a copy of My Time to Stand. It did not disappoint. Her words further elaborated on the messed up world that her mother had created for her since the moment she was born. I have always been a supporter of Gypsy and everything that she did leading up to her mother's murder. While the book reinforced opinions that I already had, it also had me scratching my head a few times and reminding myself that I knew nothing of what it was like to live the way she indeed did. Her fury towards the medical and education systems was evident in her writing, and I am happy that she is making a point to call these systems out for the way they failed her. This was a remarkable memoir, and I highly recommend it to anyone who follows true crime or this case.
I cannot believe that I started my year off with this book. I have seen mixed reviews on this and the contents but for myself, I have to say that it genuinely almost sent me into a reading slump. I requested this book because I had a bit of curiosity about what Gypsy-Rose had to say since being released from prison. I found that overall the writing was a bit sporactic.
I didn't realize this book would be going into such graphic detail surrounding her mother's death. This felt more like a true crime novel than a memoir. It was interesting to hear everything from her own voice (literally as the narrator) but there were a lot of inconsistencies throughout her story. By the end, I felt super uncomfortable and honestly this shifted my perspective of her in a negative way. Her utter lack of remorse made the book feel really icky. I expected the book to be more about herself and self discovery, however it overall felt like a confessional tape. I almost could not finish it.
If you are interested in true crime, this may be a read for you. Thank you Netgalley and RBmedia for this audiobook ARC!
It is so impressing, what this woman did in the one year since she left jail. It was really interesting to get a look inside her brain. The story is everywhere on social media but this book gives you an extra behind the scenes look on Gipsys life.
This was an interesting read. I didn’t follow the case of Gypsy until she was released from prison. I was interested to learn more about what she endured before the death of her mother. Not sure if everything in the book is true but I was interesting to her it from Gypsy herself.
I will admit I had never heard of Gypsy-Rose until she was getting out of prison. All of a sudden, her name was popping up everywhere I was thinking “Who is this Gypsy person?” How I missed the news of what happened I have no idea. While listening to this audiobook, I did become fascinated and researched the case, and I even watched some crime television to not just have Gypsy’s side of the case.
Ultimately, My Time to Stand is not a true crime book, but a memoir of Gypsy’s life that she is telling from her memory. Yes, her mother’s murder is detailed in the book along with graphic sexual encounters Gypsy had. This is Gypsy’s life from her memory and her version of events, accurate or not due to her memory or lies as people will say.
Blanchard had two co-writer to assist her with telling her version of her life. The book does have some issues with inconsistencies throughout, which could be again from Blanchard’s memory. The reader/ listener does pick up on those inconsistencies.
Gypsy-Rose also narrates My Time to Stand. I had no issue with her voice and give her kudos for being able to narrate this book, despite what people may believe or not.
In the short time since this book has been released, Gypsy-Rose has given birth to her daughter with boyfriend Ken one year to the day of her release from prison. I can only hope that she will decide to eventually live as ‘normal’ a life as possible and disappear from the limelight.
Would I have bought this book on my own? No, and if I had not been granted a copy to listen to by the publisher, I would have at some point gotten the audiobook from my library to listen to for curiosity’s sake. Many thanks to the publisher for giving me a chance to listen to and review this memoir.
This was a heartbreaking, touching, and deeply personal look into Gypsy's life and how she ended up one of the most famous true crime stories involving Munchhousen's by proxy.
This was a very strange recounting of Gypsy-Roses life. Although I found it so interesting I did not love her voice as the narrator..
I received a copy of this audiobook via NetGalley. I went into this book with an open mind and was interested to hear her story. I did note some inconsistencies in the book, but I’m not sure how much I fault her for them based on what she went through. The mind can try to shield us from traumatic experiences and there is no doubt her childhood was. It was interesting to hear the book narrated by Gypsy herself.
Like many readers, I've followed Gypsy-Rose's story over the last few years and I've been very interested in hearing more about it from her perspective. This audiobook is narrated by Gypsy-Rose and I really appreciated hearing her reflections of her life. This is a hard listen and it includes many depictions of abuse that may be hard to listen to. But the author does not shy away from sharing her real lived experiences and she knows she must dive into how she got to this point.
2.5 rounded up to 3 stars! If you’ve followed this case and are intrigued by Gypsy Rose already then this is a quick listen that you might find interesting but otherwise I would skip! I strongly believe many people write memoirs before they’ve done the inner work and reflection to truly write a great one and that’s how I felt here. I’m not sure she added much new to the story or my perspective by writing this. Thank you to NetGalley and RB media for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Personally, i think My Time To Stand is a hard book to review. As far as memoirs go, it was pretty well written, especially taking into consideration Gypsy's lack of formal education. But on the other hand, she played a vital role in the murder of her mother, so the book feels pretty gross.
First, I want to say that this book definitely needed some trigger warnings. I was prepared for some of the descriptions, but I was not anticipating the level of sexual content the memoir contained. I felt it was unnecessary and should have been left out.
I felt very conflicted while listening to the audiobook. On one hand Gypsy had to endure horrific abuse at the hands of her mother. Though I don't agree, I can understand how she arrived at the "it's me or her" conclusion. And though Dee Dee did do undeniably awful things, it was due to a mental illness that she desperately needed treatment for.
The only reason I listened to this book on audio was because I got a free advanced copy from Netgalley. I would not have paid money for this book. And honestly, I wouldn't recommend you do either. If you want to read it, I'd suggest borrowing it from the library. Gypsy should not get to profit on her crime.
Big thanks to Netgalley and Gypsy Rose Blanchard for the audioARC in exchange for a review.
Ok, so I watched The Act, I watched the Netflix docs and I googled the hell out of this case long before we got a book. I find the whole scenario absolutely wild and have some BIG feelings on this.
So the book is written (co written?) by Gyspy and also narrated by Gyspy, which I think is empowering AF. It's HER voice telling HER story.
It is very graphic and clearly should come with a million trigger warnings.
The book itself was decent, I honestly think the biggest draw was the controversy that surrounds her story.
There seems to be two camps: she did it maliciously, intentionally masterminding murder for the sake of murder, she shouldn't be allowed back into society or she was a victim, served her time and her story shows the pitfalls of a society that failed to ask the right questions from a place of ignorance.
She is both victim and perpetrator and I belive she admits that fairly well in the book.
A person cannot understand how abuse affects someone, unless they themselves have lived it and her abuser was next level.
Whether you belive she is a cold blooded murder who manipulated her boyfriend info committing the crime on her behalf, or you can understand the everlasting scar that abuse leaves and believe that she felt there was no other escape, this book is enlightening.
She clearly shows an entire retinue of systems failed her.
4 stars for the writing, storytelling, and flow.
5 stars for being strong enough to stand up to the world who broke the legs she needed to stand on.
There were points of this book that was hard to listen to, some of it seemed like complete nonsense while some of it was just sad. My heart hurts for what Gypsy was put through and I hope that she finds all the healing she needs.
while I found this entertaining, there were so many explicit, sexual details that were not necessary. Hearing about Gypsy’s bloody, wet diaper during sex and taking out her dentures to give a blow job to a dildo was…..something. I also felt the writing was inauthentic and not a true representation of Gypsy’s thoughts and voice - a testament to this is the chapter titles being a different language and then translated back to English. This seemed incredibly random and didn’t connect to the memoir in anyway. I will admit I did enjoy the continuity and the storytelling but where there was enough, in other places there was not enough.
Thank you so much to netgalley & rbmedia for the audiobook copy for review!
Most of us would be familiar with Gypsy and well, if you don’t - she, along with an accomplice murdered her mother DeeDer Blanchard. Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy and suffered horrific abuse.
Mommy Dead and Dearest is a documentary I recommended a lot and in this book Gypsy shares her story of how she came to murder her mother.
It is a revealing, shocking and very troubling story. Gypsy and her mother DeeDee and both products of horrible circumstances and it’s just really sad and heartbreaking.
Yes, Gypsy is a murderer, but not everything is so black and white and this story is all shades of great. She is embarking on a journey of recovery and self-discovery and I truly hope she can build a safe, stable and happy life, that she herself missed out on, as a child.
Thank-you RBmedia, NetGalley and Gypsy for the Audio Advanced Readers Copy, in exchange for an honest review.
Like many other people, I requested this book because of a morbid sense of curiosity in Gypsy-Rose's story and criminal case. I knew going in that this was going to be a heavy book, but I wasn't prepared for the graphic details or more concerningly the lack of apparent remorse from Gypsy herself for her part in her mother's murder. Overall, I ended up not finishing this book because it made me feel so uncomfortable.
