Book Review: Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I just finished reading Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World! by Eric Huang, and I can't recommend it enough! This book takes a fresh and fun look at nature, showing just how much incredible life exists all around us, even in our own backyards and homes. It challenges a lot of common misconceptions we have about the natural world, like thinking that all dinosaurs are long gone or that spiders are just creepy insects. Spoiler alert: they aren’t!
The format of the book is a delightful mix of engaging text and vibrant illustrations by Sam Caldwell. From start to finish, the visuals add a lively touch that perfectly complements the informative content. The illustrations are charming and filled with humor, making it a joy to flip through the pages. Each page is bright and exciting, with clever little puns and witty remarks from the animals that brought a smile to my face.
This book is perfect for kids curious about nature but also appeals to adults with its wealth of information. The layout is well-structured, making it easy to digest all the fascinating facts about plants and animals, both ancient and modern. It feels far from a traditional textbook; instead, it presents everything in an engaging way that captivates readers of all ages.
Overall, Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World! is a must-read for anyone interested in biology and the wonders of our planet. Whether you're young or just young at heart, this book will keep you entertained while expanding your knowledge about the world around us!

Great illustrations with the best nuggets of information. This book is so interesting and fun, and I feel like I could learn something new every time I read it. This is a perfect combination to get kids interested in nature and science.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Nature: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Natural World! written by Eric Huang and illustrated by Sam Caldwell is a brilliant fiction book about the world we live in, perfect for primary schools and young children.
This book is everything I had hoped it would be from the description. It was full of interesting nature facts that appeal to all ages (even adults!) The illustrations were fantastic and worked so well with the text on each page. I particularly loved the little puns and humorous commentary the animals were saying in little speech bubbles on each page. This book in no way felt like a stuffy text book and it presented all the information in an easily digestible manner.
My only comment would be that the "aren't they" "oh no they aren't" is very very repetitive, but that is what I signed up for given the title, so I can't really complain.
I can't stress how well the illustrations work for this book. It's like each page is an infographic and even though the books content isn't necessarily for younger children, the illustrations make it interesting for the little ones too!
Perfect for primary schools and nature-loving fact finders, this is a fascinating book full of weird and wonderful information. I learned so much from reading through this book and loved the fact that it doesn't talk down to children but gives them up to date learnings from the natural world in a brilliantly age appropriate way. Children will learn about mycelium networks, how fish communicate, insect acrobatics and gliding frogs, as myths are busted and amazing facts are explained. With gentle and always positive conservation facts included, this is a wonderful book for eco-warriors to explore. Caldwell's illustrations are the perfect balance of child-centred and realistic, bringing the creatures to life across the pages. The geological timeline and glossary are helpful additions. This is an absolute winner.
I enjoyed sharing this book with my son, as he likes to read about nature and animals. We even learned some new facts! The illustrations were very engaging.
It's a fun, informative book that I could see older children for independent reading or helping answer curious younger kids. The pictures aren't super engaging themselves however, which is why I think it would be more geared for older kids.
Let’s start with what I loved—the art! The illustrations were incredibly charming and gave the book a lively, engaging feel. They balanced out the text-heavy design beautifully, adding a layer of humor with the sweet, witty jokes embedded in the visuals.
However, I struggled with the book’s format. The use of phrases like “oh they aren’t” and “weren’t” was confusing, especially since the opening paragraphs were written in a factual tone. It made it hard to discern when the statements were rhetorical or intended to be taken as fact. I think the phrasing could be refined to better distinguish between the rhetorical elements and the factual content.
While this book wasn’t a total hit for me, it definitely has its place. It could work well if someone reads it aloud to the recipient, adding context and clarity. Additionally, it has potential as a tool for developing reading comprehension skills with its mix of humor and layered narrative.
Great book to learn more about nature! I loved the humor on every page of this one, and the "Oh No They Aren't" concept was fun and fresh. Definitely would be engaging for the kiddos!
Thanks to NetGalley, Eric Huang, and Quarto Publishing for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own!
This Book Rocks!
I couldn't put it down! Almost everything in this book was new to me, with only a handful of facts I already knew. The author's humor had me chuckling, and even my 6-year-old grandson enjoyed the jokes. He said, 'Nana, you’ve got to buy this book!'
For context, my grandson is an avid reader. His mom, known as 'the book lady' in our town, distributes over 500 books a month from donated sources and refills the school book box twice a week. In our house, books are a big deal!
I’ll be purchasing this book for two reasons: First, because my grandson insisted. Second, because I’m launching a YouTube channel soon, primarily focused on coloring, but I’ll also dedicate a segment to adult education, highlighting books like this and sharing reading samples.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview this book. While it might not top the bestseller lists, I’m confident it will earn a place in the top 100 children’s books. Great work!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great book for kids who are interested in nature. The layout is good and the illustrations are bright and exciting. There is a lot of scientific information about the plants and animals from the past to now
The world around us is so full of life, including plants, animals and all manner of living things. Oh no they aren’t: nature by Eric Huang is an informative book dispelling so many misconceptions about the natural world. This is an informative and entertaining resource, with authentic scientific explanations about so many topics, including sea life, prehistoric creatures, animal defenses, creepy-crawlies, bacteria and even fungi.
The layout is brilliant, and Sam Caldwell has provided such visually appealing and engaging illustrations. This book would be a wonderful gift for curious minds, or a great resource for the school library.
Many thanks Quarto Publishing Group for the digital review copy for review consideration, via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Lovely concept and cool information.
I found it engaging and my 9yo child gave it 4.5 stars.
The daring/witty tone is engaging and fresh.
What a wonderful book! Love the layout and the humour which makes for fun, easy reading for children with lots of brilliant facts and gorgeous illustrations. I would love to get this book in hardcopy for my daughters
Again, another book that dispels common myths, this time about what people think they know about animals in nature, such that all dinosaurs are extinct, or that all plants eat through photosynthesis. Because dinosaurs evolved into birds, and some plants are carnivores.
Other myths that are dispelled is that all mammals give birth to live young. But if you consider the duck-billed platypus, and the echidna, who both lay eggs, then bang goes that theory.
And of course the plants that do not get their food from the sun include such plants as the Venus flytrap, which eats insects, and mistletoe, which is a parasite that attaches to other plants, and gets its food from them.
The author also brings up the fact that strawberries aren’t actually berries, and bananas that actually are.
Kids will enjoy learning all these fun facts and probably will then turn around and spout them to friends and family. Did you know that an avocado is also considered a berry?
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out the 21st of January 2025.
There is a lot of information in this book. It can be overwhelming when it is this packed full. The illustrations make it less overwhelming though. It is well organized and interesting.
This is an intriguing book with eyecatching illustrations that is sure to inspire a love of nature among its young readers. The variety of coverage is wonderful and some of the facts very unusual and interesting! This would suit any intellectually curious child. I really appreciated the geological timeline at the end which is a really useful reference tool even for adults. A warning - I had to skip the page with spiders which was a bit too vivid for arachnophobic me… can imagine kids who love creepy crawlies adoring that page though haha!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance Digital Copy for review consideration.
