Thank you NetGalley for this ebook

this is a nice guide for people starting to work wih a CNC. The difficult concepts are made accessible with a very simple language, so that even the most stubborn people can understand what needs to be done.

The book includes several large colorful photos of impressive examples of what a CNC (computer numerical control) system can produce.

He starts with options of what type of machine one would want to buy from the basic $500 models to advanced machines around $15,000 or more. He makes suggestions allowing for the space it would require along with a noise and dust-controlled environment.

The author continues with a series of instructions. However, it’s not so simple for an absolute beginner. There are a lot of details missing like the types of dust collectors required for some of the advanced machines, wood to use (soft vs. hard) and various bits that would be needed. Also, one would need to know how to design and create software programs to cut the wood. It’s a large learning curve.

You could buy a very basic model that has very little functions. However, the beautiful examples in this book of a tea tray, carving of a lion’s face, cutting boards and other objects are made with complex CNC models. It would be helpful for a beginner to take a class at a local shop to have a basic understanding of what is required before investing in a machine.

This is a good instructional manual for those that have worked with wood and tools. It’s not straightforward for those just starting out. After reading a few chapters, most absolute beginners would probably get lost trying to make sense of the complex process. The pieces in the book are stunning that have been designed by using a CNC system. However, it takes a long time to learn the trade and create objects at this level.

My thanks to Fox Chapel Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book with an expected release date of April 16, 2025.

"CNC Woodworking for the Absolute Beginner" is a captivating invitation to a fascinating world. This bridges the gap between intimidation and inspiration, guiding the curious through the often-daunting realm of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) woodworking.

Bagnall's writing style is refreshingly conversational, making complex concepts accessible without oversimplification. He acknowledges the beginner's anxieties, addressing common fears like "breaking expensive equipment" with practical advice and a reassuring tone. The book doesn't shy away from technical details, but it presents them in a digestible manner, often through engaging anecdotes and real-world examples.

The inclusion of five skill-building projects is a brilliant touch. These projects are carefully sequenced, starting with simple tasks to build confidence and gradually increasing in complexity. Each project is meticulously detailed, with clear instructions, helpful diagrams, and even troubleshooting tips. This hands-on approach transforms the learning experience from passive to active, allowing readers to solidify their understanding through practical application.

This book's greatest strength lies in its focus on the "why" behind the "how." Bagnall emphasizes the creative potential of CNC technology, inspiring readers to think beyond pre-designed projects. He encourages experimentation, exploration, and the joy of personalizing creations. This emphasis on the artistic and expressive aspects of CNC woodworking sets the book apart from purely technical manuals.

Whether you're a complete novice or someone with basic woodworking skills, this book will provide valuable insights and a solid foundation for your CNC journey.
