First, thank you Bloom and NetGalley for this Arc I received (and I apologize it took me so long to get to it.)
This was a wonderful follow up to the first book, and I just fell in love with Fauna even more (sorry Marlow and Caliban). I enjoyed the adventure to new pantheons and continue to love the concept of this storyline. The first portion felt a bit slow to me, but once we started traveling (and taking on assholes in parks), everything picked up. I definitely look forward to continuing this series (you can't stop now, can you Piper?!)
I devoured this book. A well written sequel to the cliffhanger of The Deer and the Dragon. I hate to say it but I love Fauna more than Marlowe. We get more dynamics and relationships in this installment than the first and it felt more well rounded.
“'I’ve dedicated lifetime after lifetime to finding you,' he murmured. 'Maybe it’s my turn.'”
Picking up right where The Deer and the Dragon left off, The Fox and the Falcon follows Marlowe as she attempts to find a way to save her paramour (who until recently she thought was a figment of her imagination).
I couldn’t help but thinking while reading this that this feels like a book for Rick Riordan fans who have grown up. Piper does a brilliant job of bringing deities to life, but what I love is that she doesn’t just focus on the ones we know well. In this book we see Norse mythology, Greek mythology and Christian mythology, all of which are decently well known. But major players also come from Canaanite mythology, which I knew nothing about prior to reading this, and we also see hints at future pantheons that might be involved in the next books. The amount of research Piper has put into this book is evident, with even what I think was a nod at some not being included due to be a closed practice which I thought was absolutely amazingly well thought out.
I loved this book. While perhaps not as fast paced as the first book, I always wanted to turn to the next page to find out what would happen. The plot wasn’t predictable, at least not to me. I’m so looking forward to the next books in the series!
My only complaint is that Marlowe is still insufferably ignorant. I think it is meant to show that she is human, but I am human and I understand the stuff that she clearly doesn’t about fae and such. And sure I read a lot of fantasy, but she is an author! I do wish she wasn’t so unknowledgeable on basic fae/god/not human practices. Maybe she will improve in the next book. At least it seems that Fauna agrees with me.
Thank you Bloom Books and Piper CJ for the advanced reader's copy of this book. I highly recommend it!
Fauna, Fauna, Fauna! Oh sorry, I thought maybe she was like Beetlejuice and would show up... What I would give to have a friend like her?!
Piper has once again replaced my favorite book with another. From the vivid descriptions of all the realms our lovely crew of adventurers visit, to the deep connections of Marlow's flashbacks, this book had me absolutely gripped from start to finish.
The only negative I have to say about this book is the author is forcing me to wait for the next installment to be released!
Thank you NetGalley & Bloom Books for this ARC!
Book two in this series is just as action packed as the first. I absolutely love Fauna and was thrilled she had a main part in this sequel (I’m begging for more Azrames!!) My absolute favorite part of this book and series is the exploration of multiple pantheons. I’ve never read a book that brings all of them together and where the characters even visit multiple worlds! However, I would love a glossary breakdown to keep track of who is in what pantheon and how they are connected. I can see how it would be confusing for a reader who doesn’t already have some knowledge over the different Greek and Norse gods/goddesses.
4 stars, and already excited for book three!!
I absolutely DEVOURED this book. Piper’s No Other Gods series is one of my absolute favorites! Her writing is immaculate as always. The effort, detail, and knowledge she incorporates is truly like none other.
In NOG2 we get to see more Pantheons, new characters, and a whole lot more of Marlow & Fauna. The way all the varied folklore meshes together is exquisite, in a way only Piper can write! Since this is spoiler-free, I cannot talk about my favorite new character…but let’s just say I love seeing more of the Nordes! There’s adventure, there’s secrets, twists, and a Lore galore! 100/10 recommend!
Piper has done it again. I was so incredibly stoked to get access to this book early, and then I did what every true book lover does: put off starting it so I didn't read it too fast. This was worth all the hype. In this book, Piper effortlessly pulls us into the world in a fast-paced and enthralling way. You feel like you haven't missed a beat from the last book. She builds up her characters so well that I feel like I know them. It's easy to love and understand each one. Her MC is funny, powerful, but also her own worst enemy (which is incredibly relatable). I'm failing to put into words how much this series has become my new obsession. Its lore-filled irreverence is right up there with the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. I need 15 more books now, please, Ms. CJ.
Fauna continues to be everything, and she has never done anything wrong in her life ever. I came back for Fauna, I stayed for Fauna, and I was not disappointed.
I'm a HUGE fan of the way this played out with diving into the different pantheons. So often we're limited to just one (usually Greek), and it was nice to get a taste of the Norse pantheon for a change. As much as I loved it, I could definitely see how it may be confusing for folks not super knowledgeable in that realm--most of the history/relevant information is dumped on Marlow via a story Fauna tells, and if you miss it, you're going to have to back track to pick up the information later.
Marlow is still struggling along with life, just letting everything happen to her and letting those around her make her own decisions. It's not until around 60% through the book she begins to stand up for herself and take charge of what's happening around her. I get it, who are you to tell a God or two what to do? But we could at least pretend that she's more than just along for the ride as a plot device and an actual character?
The story is also told with a lot of flashbacks to Marlow's early life and her interactions with her mother and growing up with Caliban. If the first book was about processing religious trauma, this one was about processing familial trauma and learning to accept the tangled web that abuse and love can entwine. I definitely enjoyed these flashbacks, I just wish they had been more relevant to the immediate story when they were dropped in--like if something triggered the thought of the memory for her rather than it just randomly appearing. They're so short it didn't really take me out of the story, but I think some additional tie-ins would have been nice.
Book two picks up where book one left off. Marlow has witnessed the killing of one of the Canaanite goddesses. Azrames and Caliban have been taken prisoner, and Marlow and Fauna are left to make a plan to break them free. Along the way, Marlow will learn more about herself and starts to wonder if maybe Fauna isn't who she says she is.
Piper has done an absolutely incredible job (once again). I can honestly say book two is even better than book one. I forced myself to read slower than I normally do so I could really draw it out and take in the entire plot. The last quarter or so, I was unable to stop as it was just insane and I absolutely did not guess the big reveals before they were laid out.
I really have to take time to once again say how well done Pipers research is. As a religious studies scholar, how she handles each of the pantheons is just outstanding. I really appreciate the care that very clearly went into this part of writing.
I'm basically foaming at the mouth for book three, and book two isn't even published yet. This brings me to say a HUGE thank you to Bloom and Netgalley for sending this ARC my way. I can't believe I'm lucky enough to get the experience of advance reading for one of my favorite authors.
I am trying to put into words exactly what this series did to my brain chemistry. 🤯 is seriously the only thing.
Mind altering. Kick my feet, squirm, need to adjust in my seat and take a break with a glass of cold water chapters... and gasping for air, clenching my heart in others. But every single word was captivating.
I will talk about this series to anyone who listens. Hands down my all time favorite. I am on my knees for you Piper CJ. 🙌🏼
Piper has included even more pantheons than before and I absolutely love how she has combined all of them in this fantastic story.
This book took the story in a direction I wasn't expecting, but I am loving it even more because of that turn.
Wow… just wow! This books world building with the Phoenicians was so cool! I love how everything happened in this pantheon and the growth/ depth of the characters was written. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how things were going to play out and it did not disappoint!
I’m so glad I had the chance to read a copy of this early! I gave this 3.75 stars.
I loved learning more about different pantheons and visiting more realms and deities. The first 70% of the book was very slow and honestly felt like 100 pages could’ve been shaved off with little plot loss, but the ending was such a whirlwind that I was left blindsided and wanting to know what happens next. I did enjoy the first book of the series more than this one, but I will still most likely continue the series. The big twisty reveal seemed super out random and far fetched but I liked the overall message it tied into. I’m also interested to see how all the relationship (romantic and platonic) will pan out in the next book.
I finished The Deer and the Dragon just a few days before I received my first ARC and I could have died!! I had not stopped thinking about these characters and waiting for February’s release of The Fox and the Falcon was going to be torture. I did not have to wait 😈🎉 The continuation of this series is fantastic! Lots of little (and some big) surprises in this one that I didn’t see coming! Can. Not. Wait! to continue the “no other gods” series by @piper_cj If any of my friends are reading this series please text me! I need someone to obsess over this with me 🤣
The Fox and The Falcon is the perfect continuation of the No Other God’s series by Piper C.J. (@piper_cj) from Bloom Books (@read_bloom).
It is FABULOUS and I am already drooling over book three (and this book isn’t even officially out in the world yet!).
As is to be expected from a Piper C.J. book, this story is filled with twists, turns, and trials you might not see coming.
Reliable players become unpredictable, beloved characters’ motives are brought into question, and the world as you know it just might not be everything you expect it to be.
Do your self a favor—preorder this immediately.
Thank you, @read_bloom, for this eARC. 😍
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
I was given an ARC of this books and I’m so happy I was! It was just as good as the first, if not better and I’m already so ready for the third. The mythology drops, talks about even the most unknown of pantheons, the drama…it’s all there and it’s all amazing!
I wanted to love it, but the sequel fell flat. I adored the first book, but the romance momentum was lost and the tone was different than the first book.
This series is just my whole personality, again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars and more for me. This book is such a reminder that humans and fae will see things differently. Especially growing up in the church, then deconstructing, then finding out not only was that real, but other pantheons are as well?! I mean, we are lucky Marlow is as together as she is at this point. So, let’s go and travel to new places, and strangely find ourselves wishing we could just go back to Hell and hang out at the bar.
The Deer and the Dragon left us off wondering what would happen. Marlow is going to need Fauna (oh how I love her) to help her gather allies to find out what is going on and what needs to happen next. You are going to laugh, you are going to cry, you will hold your breath, be reminded how much found family means, be so angry, and again with the SPICE 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️!! Of course Piper is going to break your heart, have you sitting there with conflicting feelings, then screaming NOOOOOOOOOO when you realize you just read the last line. I say it every time, but Piper has a way of really putting the images of the characters in your head, making you feel all the feelings and emotions, then wanting to be dramatic and cry knowing it will be forever before you can read the next book (yet excited about Villians 2 and Fern 2 coming out in between).
There is so much more I want to say, but it would all be spoilers. I certainly don’t want to spill the tea… As always, Helena did a fantastic job on the cover art, and I cannot wait to see the other art she has done. Make sure you go to listen to the playlists, and always read the content warnings on Piper’s website pipercj(dot)com.
Thank you to Bloom Books, NetGalley, and Piper for the opportunity to read this eARC and completely devour it (in between adult responsibilities, ugh). My review is my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom for this ARC!
The Fox and the Falcon was a phenomenal continuation of this series. I love watching Marlow grow while a whole new world unfolded around her. She is such an incredibly strong female lead and her crew really accentuates it. The Fox and the Falcon will have you on your toes, questioning what side of the conflict you are on, and make you evaluate your relationship with Heaven. I would highly recommend you pick up this series ASAP!!
Ever since I finished The Deer and the Dragon, I have been impatiently waiting for the release of the sequel, The Fox and the Falcon. I couldn't put it down!! Every turn of the page left me wanting more. I don't want to go into detail too much about characters so I don't give them away, but I will say that there are some unexpected appearances and some fun new allies!
