A Perfect Match
In this entertaining historical romance, Mrs. Doe-Lyon has a daunting task. Is she up to the challenge? Kate needs to get married, and she needs to do it soon. Otherwise, the consequences for her and her family will be dire.
Oliver lost his wife and has been living in limbo. Would Mrs. Dove-Lyon find him the right match?
Kate and Oliver came to the Black Widow of White Hall just at the right time. They were the perfect match, but what would it take for them to realize it? Kate and Oliver would marry, but an unexpected evil lurked, waiting to pounce.
I loved this story. I would recommend it to those who like historical romance with mystery, a dash of suspense, and twists you won’t see coming. I look forward to reading what this author writes next.
First book for me by Aviva Orr and what a beautiful story it was. The handling of Oliver and his ‘issue’ was so well done it makes you cheer for his and Kate’s romance and healing. It’s a short novella but I appreciate a story that doesn’t have a ton of angst so this book was near perfection to me. I’ll be looking for more from Ms. Orr.
It was ok, sometimes I feel this series has the same story but different characters and feel like the same recycled stories being repeated by different authors. It was just ok.
Quick read with an emotional romance and a hint of intrigue. Kate is in a tough spot. She and her fiancé gave in to their love, but before they could marry, he and his sister (Kate's best friend) died in a carriage accident. Now Kate is pregnant and contemplating moving away to hide the truth. However, her aunt talks her into hiring Mrs. Dove-Lyon to find her a husband.
Oliver, Earl of Knox, spent two years in deep mourning after the death of his wife and the news that he was sterile, followed by the news that his distant cousin and heir had died. To escape the overwhelming silence of his home, he heads to the Lyon's Den for distraction. He doesn't expect Mrs. Dove-Lyon to appeal to him to marry one of her projects. With no desire to risk his heart again, Oliver declines the offer.
But Fate isn't done with him. When Oliver discovers the lady in question was auctioned off to a creep, he can't help but intervene. I liked his protectiveness toward Kate. I liked that they were honest with each other about their pasts and their expectations. It didn't take long for them to realize that they liked each other, with those feelings rapidly turning to love.
Matters become complicated when someone from Kate's past reappears and proceeds to make trouble. I ached for the pain it caused Kate and cheered when she discovered the truth. There was a twist in the identity of her former fiancé that I suspected from the start, but there was more to it than I knew. I liked the resolution and seeing Kate's strength of will.
The Imperfect Lyon by Aviva Orr is a short novel about a woman who is pregnant with no husband and a widower who has no desire to remarry. Of course Bessie Dove-Lyon gets her way in the end but there are complications both before and after the marriage takes place.
Fun story, a little different than most, and worth the read. These are two characters who deserve a happy life. Kate Sheldon was a trusting young woman who trusted the wrong people. She nearly had to pay for that mistake several time, including with her life. Oliver was an earl but that hadn’t saved his wife or the baby she was birthing. Both likable characters. Both deserving of love, which they found, but there is always someone ready to snatch it away. Especially if there is a title involved. Nicely written, full of twists and turns, this is a clever novel, worthy of bing read.
I was invited to read The Imperfect Lyon by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #AvivaOrr #TheImperfect Lyon
This is by far the most emotional Lyon's book I've read so far. It had such an original and engaging love story. The drama, emotional issues, a death, an auction, and other plot twists were very enthralling. I enjoyed how beautiful the ending was. I highly recommend reading!
In this visit to the Lyon's Den world the widow has to get ruthless.
This is a short but very full novella with a surprising twist. A very worthy hero and a heroine who is not as timid as she seems.
This is an excellent and entertaining story.
Good fun.
2.75 stars.
The core story was engaging and I felt like the characters could have been really good. I know these Lyon's Den books are on the shorter side, but I feel as though this one could have benefitted from just a few more chapters. I think we needed a bit more time to get to know the characters and their situation a bit better, flesh things out a bit more. Trying to connect the drive behind certain character fell flat for me because we didn't get to see enough of that on the page, it was more just talked about instead of shown to us.
The writing itself was quite nice, I just wanted more! Each time I pick up a Lyon's Den book, it feels like it's been written by the same author, same type of writing in that world, which makes them really feel like a proper connected world. So I did enjoy that aspect.
I did think that Oliver's character was really sweet, and their pairing was going to be sweet as well, just based on both of their circumstances. But I truly just wanted more of that seen, as well. Things just felt too rushed here. And that's saying something because the whole idea on some of these stories in the years they are set in is that life is rushed (the whole "we have to be married and have babies in that order and everything must be proper" kind of thing).
A uniquely different type of my favorite series on Dove-Lyon. Oliver is a widow who deeply loved his wife. Kate is a spinster, who loved a man who died before their marriage. The plot is interesting and different with a couple of villains and unexpected twists. What was just ok for me, was Oliver's sudden turn about and so called love. I think there could have been a bit more interaction between the two before it moved on to the struggles they faced together. I still enjoyed the story and wouldn't have missed reading it.
I enjoyed this engaging marriage of convenience novella that turns into a thriller with its unexpected twists, touch of danger, suspense, closed-door love scenes and very likable characters. I was really surprised how the story developed.
Kate Sheldon is devastated when her fiancé Theo and her best friend Emilia, Theo's sister, are killed in a carriage accident and she is left pregnant. On the advice of her aunt, she asks the Black Widow of Whitehall to find her a husband quickly and Ms Dove-Lyon recommends the Earl of Knox.
Oliver Harrington, Earl of Knox, is still mourning the death of his beloved wife and the fact that he was unable to give her the children she longed for. When the Black Widow proposes marriage to Kate, he is initially against it, but when Kate is sold to a creep at a subsequent silent auction following his refusal, Oliver wants to protect the young woman and her unborn baby and proposes to her...
If you like sweet and quick to read historical romance novels with surprising twists and a touch of suspense, you are sure to enjoy this book!
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
Aviva Orr does a great job in writing this book in the Lyon's Den world, it had that element that I was looking for and was engaged with the characters. I was invested in the historical romance going on and was hooked from the first page. It was everything that I was looking for and glad I got to read this.
Easy to love this couple as both have issues to overcome.
Oliver has no heir and his wife is dead.
Kate is pregnant without a husband.
Together with the help of Mrs Dove Lyon, they come together to weather their circumstances.
Emotionally charged with a happy ending.
Fate, Twisting Mystery, Beautiful Love Story:
Destiny and a large amount of engineering from Mrs. Dove Lyon bring two wonderful characters together in this amazing love mystery story.
Kate is in a desperate situation and Oliver is a lonely widower. A perfect fix from the Black Widow is in the works.
This turned out to be a captivating twisting tangle of emotions that brings forth a devious character., but Mrs. Dove Lyon uses her expertise and notoriety to bring forth a very dynamic heartfelt conclusion to this gripping story.
I truly enjoyed reading The Imperfect Lyon.
This is a fairly short novella, however, it is packed with romance, suspense, and intrigue. Oliver has vowed never to marry again, even when it transpires that his distant cousin and heir has died in an accident. Bessie Dove-Lyon invites him to offer for Kate in marriage as she can give him the one thing he cannot otherwise have. When Oliver turns her down, the Black Widow resorts to an auction for Kate's hand in marriage. And that is when the trouble begins! As Oliver rethinks his decision, knowing that he is Kate's only chance at happiness, he finds she is more stubborn than he expected. Together with help from friends, problems are solved and the truth emerges, bringing about the perfect solution to both their difficulties. I received a copy of this lovely romance as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This is one very interesting story…one I have not seen anywhere else. Having dealt with the situation that Oliver has was a breath of fresh air. The twists and turns were so entertaining and I enjoyed how the author weaved it all together. All your emotions are in play here, so be prepared to rage, sympathize, sigh and swoon in this wonderfully written and beautiful tale of love, protection and sacrifice. I especially loved loved why the title of the book was chosen- a bit of history there.
I received this book for free and these are my own opinions
Kate Sheldon needs a husband, right away. Her aunt knows of only one person who can help, Mrs.Bessie Dove-Lyon. She knows just the man, the Earl of Knox. Lonely and depressed from losing his wife and his inability to have children, he swears he will never remarry. It's not an easy solution when Bessie knows the right man is resistant. She is one smart lady and is known for manipulating the situation to her satisfaction. Just as Oliver and Kate look forward to the future, a ghost from the past is looking to destroy everything Kate holds dear.
This book moves really quickly and has some hair raising moments.
The books in this series are always a pleasure to read.
Mild descriptive sex.

After Kate Sheldon’s betrothed dies, she finds herself in a terrible predicament one that will destroy her reputation and disgrace her family for decades. Distraught, Kate contemplates self-exile to the continent. But her aunt has a better idea. Kate accepts her aunt’s advice and secures Bessie Dove-Lyon’s services. Fate has been cruel to Oliver Harrington, 4th Earl of Knox. First, it took his ability to sire an heir, and then it stole his beloved wife. Oliver retreats from Society but after two years of deep mourning, he can no longer stand the silence that echoes throughout his mansion. Seeking distraction, Oliver turns to the most notorious gambling den in London. But when offered a second chance at happiness, Oliver is forced to confront his detached ways and acknowledge his innermost desires.
Another well written novella in this connected series & I read it straight through. I liked both Oliver & Kate but whilst things had to be rushed because of circumstances I felt that their budding feelings were put on the back burner & they went from strangers to married & in love in the snap of my fingers. There were a couple of surprises which I wasn’t expecting & added to the book. An enjoyable book which I felt would have benefitted from being longer so that Oliver & Kate’s obvious attraction could have been developed
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
The fact that authors are still able to create unique characters and plots within the Lyon's Den world after all of this time is quite impressive. The Imperfect Lyon offers some unexpected twists and turns and focuses as much time on after the marriage as before. The biggest thing I felt it was lacking was more between Kate and Oliver as they were falling in love. It kind of felt like they went from being strangers who needed to wed for their own reasons to being passionately in love over the course of one chapter. I loved them as characters and wanted to be sure each got the love they deserved in their lives. Having Oliver be the one with the infertility problem was such a nice reversal in these types of stories - I so appreciated that he and Kate didn't magically have a child together because I think it is always good to show that family/parenthood can look more than one way. With regard to the Lyon's Den portion of the story, I did not understand why Dove-Lyon allowed Middlemarch to be a part of her matchmaking plan given how horrible a person he was (I cannot believe that she would not have been fully aware of his true character). And I would have liked more about how Emilia and Middlemarch teamed up and what exactly his plan had been (it's clear what hers had been). I would say this book would have benefitted from an extra 2-3 chapters (and I would have had no problem being immersed in this world for a little longer).
A widower and a lost engagement make a perfect match. Or so it seems.
The history behind the imperfect man is very interesting history I am glad the author included that tidbit. As this story was quite a ride. Ups and downs highs and lows, it never gave me a chance to relax. I read this book in one afternoon I was so rivated. This is a mostly closed door romance one little scene after marriage.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with guidelines.
I loved the characters in this story it was a sweet storyline. The herorine and the hero both were living with delusions of what love is, but they found it. Nice!!
