This is a very important book. It's about World War 2, but it's not anything like the usual type of books of that era. This is the first book I've ever read that shows German soldiers as human beings, people whose only reason to fight was because of the mandatory draft, people with families and fears and illnesses. Obviously that doesn't excuse the atrocities committed, but it's interesting to see the other side of the story we all know so well, especially in an autobiography.
