I would give this 3.5 stars if I could but I rounded it up to 4 stars because even though it was a bit predictable, there are a lot of things that I liked about this novel . The descriptions really gave me a sense of place and how different the two places were - Newfoundland and Foxville . I was fascinated with the brief description of the gold mining process . I liked the two main characters Angela and her husband Jack in spite of his flaws. I liked the writing .
Jack and Angela are a married couple who find themselves jobless and move to better opportunities to do what it takes. Miming is a tough job and so is the town they relocate to. They learn what it feels to be outsiders. They learn resentment and feel their hearts being tested. Peter is found stealing and this test both families and friendship. This book is about poverty, necessities and what it takes to survive in a community.
I tried to get focus into this story but I had to read several times some parts, because I thought that the connection between each chapter needeed more deepening.
There was a strange mood in this story, from the beginning I felt unconfortable, like I was blocked, and that's why I decided to stop reading it.
So maybe I'll try it an other time but I couldn't get into the story.
Excellent written book, the character development and plot were well thought out and the read was enjoyable.
I so wanted to love this novel and it was so promising at its beginning:

The inhabitants of a Newfoundland fishing village shut down by the collapse of the Atlantic fishing industry, move nearly en masse to Alberta to work in the oil field. Their families go with them, which is often not the case.
The part of the book set in Newfoundland rang true, as did the beginning of the time in Alberta but once the author had solidified the setting and, to some extent, the personalities, the plot sadly fell apart.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. This did not affect my review.
