DNFed at 35% because I wasn't comfortable with the things that were happening in this book. There were also way too many characters and different pet names for me to keep up with the story.

Unfortunately I couldn't finish this book. I gave up at about 20%, which is something I hate doing. There was nothing wrong with it, in-fact, it was beautifully written but I lacked the basic historic knowledge to be able to follow it well.

The story itself is compelling, the writing didn’t flow as I expected but still one I enjoyed. I am always pulled into the generational connection of life in this way…. It’s Sami’s way of learning how her grandparents and parents are the way they are.

Couldn’t be more poignant than reading this with what is happening in the world

This was a thriller I couldn’t put it down. Set amid the Middle Eastern conflict in 1989 Michelle Shine manages to portray people on both sides with sensitivity, respect and above all, humanity. Against this backdrop we see ordinary people battling inner conflict in a story of survival, bravery, intergenerational trauma and mothers who want the best for their children.
Each character holds a different perspective and through the interspersing of fiction with real events, we see the complexities of both the region and the human condition. A thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Absolutely beautifully written, accomplishing the goal of being a thought-provoking, emotionally aware piece. This story offers a symphony of complex perspectives to explore while following the intersecting lives of ordinary people trying to survive in political unrest.
