First and foremost, Thank you Netgalley for this ARC! this book is one of my very anticipated reads of 2025 ever since i read “Dark Restraint”.
At first i was very hesitant about this particular story and couple because it’s Katee Robert’s first MM book, but I swear this author has the gift of writing that will make me read anything in one sitting. I love this series with my whole heart it’s one of my favorite series ever.
Character wise, I want to put Poseidon in my pocket and protect him forever, he’s truly too good for this world. he’s just a big guy with a big heart that this world doesn’t deserve.
ZeusHera cameos in this book, i legit screamed every time they appear, they’re my favorite characters and favorite couple in this series i genuinely can’t wait for their book.
Plot wise, i feel like a lot has happened but at the same time not much happened? i wanted to see shit going down but damn it’s taking its very sweet time doing so… I want to be in Circe’s head i can’t wait to see what her and her minions are planning.
Overall, this book was fun i liked it, but my excitement for book 9 which is ZeusHera increased x1000 times more after finishing this book, DEC 2025 needs to come faster!!!!! i need my babies RIGHT NOW!
“we’re on the brink of a fucking war and i’m worried about doing things that might put a little bit of light back into his dark-brown eyes.”₊ ⊹
my thoughts┊ugh i knew this was going to slap! technically more of a 4.5 in my brain, but i have no problem rounding it up to a 5 star for goodreads.
i’ve enjoyed this series so far, but it has felt like the past few books have been a bit of a let down for me. i’ve been more invested in the plot than the couple, which takes away an element of enjoyment. however, i was thoroughly invested in both the plot and the character dynamics with this book, and it hit soooo good. the dynamic between poseidon and icarus was completely different from what i was expecting/wanting, but it just felt so right for them that i wasn’t even mad about it. i loved the way that they cared for each other, and the development they both had individually but also as a couple was so fantastic. their communication skills!!!!!! on top. unmatched. love to see it.
the plot also had me literally biting my nails to the bit; things are picking up so much and i feel like a ticking time bomb waiting to see how everything unfolds. i don’t think i’ve ever been so invested in a political themed plot. this one just takes the cake, i swear.
also, i’m still a zeus/perseus fan til i die. looooved seeing more of his character in this, all the different facets he presents. i’m actually dying for his book!!!!!!!
I was so excited for this book, it was the most anticipated in the series. Per usual, Katee Robert knocked it out of the park!
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.
This is book 8 in the Dark Olympus series - a series I have really loved.
This story follows Poseidon and Icarus in the first MM story from Katee Robert’s.
Since this is book 8 in the series this had a lot of of filler information and we are still building up to the finale fight because of this it did fall a little short for me as it focused mainly on the plot rather than just the love interests.
However, there were some really sweet and vulnerable moments between Poseidon and Icarus and I loved their chemistry. I will note this did take place over a few days so there was a bit of insta love.
I am so ready for Hera and Zeus’s story. I think it will be a really great enemies to lovers and 2nd to the last book in this series.
My favourite quote :
“But it’s not just lust; if it were, maybe I could control my reactions better. I want quiet meals while he decompresses from his day. I want him to show me around the shipping yard, to share all the things he very clearly loves. I want to spend my nights sprawled across his chest, feeling safer than I ever have. I want…everything. He proves just how good he is by pulling me into a hug that feels like maybe he really could press all my broken pieces back together with sheer determination and acceptance”
The plot in this book was really plotting and I am here for it making its way towards the end of the overarching Olympus plot. The romance is between Icarus and Poseidon and it's an insta lust captive/captor story. Right off the bat Poseidon is this Neuro divergent caring man who hates the way Icarus was treated as his captive. I enjoyed both of them though I felt at times that the romance was surface level. I liked seeing them care for each other outside of the bedroom and towards the end I was fully sold on the love. The most important thing I felt out of this book was Zeus and Hera and omg I am so excited for their book. Thanks to Sourcebooks Casa for this arc for an honest review.
I really liked Icarus and Poseidon's relationship, I would have loved if this book was longer and we got to see more of them. Wished we got to see more of the world building, because it sounded very cool, but the romance was still very good.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Another great read from Katee Robert! I really liked Poseidon and Icarus' pairing. The angst and heat were perfect. One of my favorites of the series!
This story starts off immediately after the end of the last book with our two MMC: Poseidon and Icarus. The roles have flipped after Icarus tried to use Poseidon to get freedom for his sister and himself, and now Icarus is a captive of Poseidon. Most of Olympus is not a fan of Icarus as his father (Minos RIP) has caused a lot of hell for the Thirteen. Now that the barrier is down, Olympus must figure out what to do with Circe and her fleet that is awaiting in the bay. The book is a battle between should we go to war with Circe or not. And of course there is a little Hera and Zeus (their book is next) action as well that Poseidon gets tied into.
As Katee's first MM romance book, I think she knocked it out of the park. I loved that Poseidon was the sub in the relationship, with a kink for pain/punishment, even though he is the bigger of the two men. It was also really great to learn more about Poseidon as he was one of the few Thirteen that we really didn't know anything about as he kept to himself in the other books. He was a kind, gentle person, which threw Icarus off. I also enjoyed how Poseidon really saw Icarus and was able to call him out whenever he was trying to be manipulative (which really wasn't Icarus's fault as that was all he has known). Let's not forget the smut - Katee is chef's kiss one of the best smut scene writers.
What I liked about this book: Learning more about Poseidon and how soft and kind he is as a person, the relationship/dynamics between Icarus and Poseidon, the smut (Katee you are one of the greatest smut writers I have ever come across), all of the action in this book was well-paced and we were given great space in between for character development and relationship building.
What I didn't like: I'm not sure if this is going to be edited out, but in the descriptions of characters at time, it would just describe someone as black person or white person and I think this could be rephrased a little as it made me feel weird reading, also I'm a little sad that we are losing (not by death) so many characters (happy they are having happiness and freedom from the awful power hungry Thirteen), but we have lost Aphrodite, Hephaestus, now Poseidon - plus Ariadne and the Minotaur.
I wish this series wasn't ending in two more books because it is just that good.
Thanks Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review !
Ok I'm going to be honest and say I haven't read the majority of the books in the series. I skipped from like number 3 to this one.
Ok so I will say though that this was a good entry even though i missed the main story plots from other books. BUT i was able to catch up pretty quickly with no problems.
I will say that I loved Icarus and Poseidon and their love story even though I did feel like it went pretty quickly.
And now I might have to continue the series because I'm real real curious about the relationship between Zeus and Hera.
and hermes...
All in all, I give it a good solid 3.5/5. Maybe 3.75
Thank you to NetGalley for the Arc. All opinions are my own.
Thank you so much Netgalley for giving me this ARC in exchange of an honest review.
Actual rating 3.75⭐️
I missed this world so much after not reading Dark Restraint and after finishing this book I really have to go back and read it!!!
Sweet Obsession was such a good book and I missed these characters so much. Even if I liked Icarus and Poseidon, I loved seeing all those snippets with Zeus and Hera and I'm so intrigued about Hermes.
Another steamy installment in the Olympus series! The plot continued to move things along and I’m interested to see how it all comes to a head soon as the series will wrap up.
Thank you to the author and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book just wasn’t for me. Honestly the last few in this series have been a bit of a letdown and this one was the final nail in the coffin for this series for me. I didn’t find either main character to be enjoyable; in fact, they both seemed to be so different than the portrayals of them we had seen in previous books. The plot really didn’t move enough for me or keep me engaged. I honestly don’t know if I will pick up the last two books in this series. Just not for me at all.
“Sweet Obsession” makes good progress in propelling forward the overarching storyline of the Neon Gods series while still balancing the spice expected with a novel in this series. “Sweet Obsession” skewers stereotypes and is a solid addition to the series.
This series has been one of my very favorites. We now see Icarus and Poseidon's story, and it's everything I expected.
