I think one of the hardest things to do must be writing humor books. Unless the author hits the exact perfect tone it comes across as forced. Dave Barry seems to effortlessly hit the correct tone every time. It can be something totally stupid but his writing makes the situation, of phrase, etc. funny enough to make you laugh. ("I'm a Gators fan and I am calling in..." is an example from a different Barry book.) In The Worst Class Trip Ever Barry sets his sights on the tween audience, writing about an 8th grade class trip to Washington D.C. The humor hits the right level for the 13-year-old audience. This is a winner for kids.
