Awesome book!! Great author! Will be looking for more!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a quick, fast-paced read. The writing was a bit lacking in development and maturity. But the mystery and the twists kept me reading. Some twists were predictable and others were totally surprising. All in all, this was a decent read.

I found this book to be really suspenseful. I enjoyed the mystery and I did not see the twists coming. I really was able to connect with the main character as well. Huge thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the arc!

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I'm always very happy about an ARC and being able to give it a review! <3
The blurb for the book sounded very exciting but I never thought it would be THAT exciting.
Exciting from the very first page to the very last. No unnecessary length, no boring characters and the twist at the end was *chef's kiss* my jaw dropped, litteraly..even though I guessed one of them, hehe.
I couldn't and didn't want to put the book down and will look for the author and other books by him immediately after my review! This was definitely not my last by him.
My first highlight for 2025 ✨

Thank you, NetGalley and Jack Dane, for this ARC.
This was a fast paced read. Our main character Salem is down on her luck and is looking for a new start with her new apartment. Things go from bad to worse for Salem. Her mysterious neighbor across the hall and her only friend giving off bad vibes.
If your looking for a quick read I highly recommend this book. For me I would have liked a little more about Salem and her past and after the events that unfold what her future holds. All in all I liked this book. Can't wait to see what comes next from this author.

I hate using the word "unputdownable' but....that's what this is.
Salem moves into a new place and sees her tall, dark and handsome neighbor. She also sees his beautiful girlfriend. She obsesses over the couple.
Then she sees another woman. And another. But...she never sees these women leave.
Jack Dane has hit it our of the park with disturbing neighbors.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book

Thank you NetGalley and Back Alley Press for this EARC!!
The Apartment Across The Hall is set in NYC and our main character Salem moves into a run down NYC apartment and soon learns that things around her are not at all what they seem!!! This was such a gripping and fast paced read!! I did not want to put this one down and it kept me captivated from beginning to end!!!

Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Apartment down the hall. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book when I started it. I almost put it aside but I didn’t and I am glad I kept going.
Salem Ripley is a bit of a loser she’s on her last few days of money and no where to live. Her friend Derek finds a place for her to stay but it’s not the best place but she doesn’t have any money or choices. So this has to do
Salem discovers the tenants are not very friendly and the owner is nonexistent.
Her one neighbor is Victor. Nice looking but seems like he has some issues or just wants to be left alone.
Salem watches through the peephole as Victor meets lots of women but they don’t seem to leave the building. She does see one woman Claire who appears to be his girlfriend and she doesn’t seem to know what is going on with Victor.
Salem is determined to find out what is happening and she is going to warn Claire about it too.
But a call to the police turns into nothing and She’s afraid Victor will hurt her or maybe worse.
Salem has a plan and she’s not going to let Victor get away with whatever he is doing. But things may not be as they seem and Salem will have to find out just what is happening even if she might be in danger for trying.
Very good.

Fast-paced, exciting, and oh, so creepy! I really enjoyed this book — it’s a must-read. Check it out!

This book really gave me the creeps and had me on the edge of my seat whilst also instilling in my own fears of who are my neighbours, very suspensful.

This was a quick and fast-paced read, centered on Salem, who moves into a new apartment in New York City, only to find out that it’s not what she expected. The neighbors seem really weird and Salem cannot help herself from digging in a little more.
The story was definitely creepy and the author did a great job at painting a picture of what Salem was experiencing. While I figured out a couple of the twists there were more that I certainly did not see coming. Salem drove me insane for the first half of the book, as I felt like she made risky decisions that no real person would actually make. By the second half of the book, I grew to appreciate her gumption more. While the story veered into not being all that realistic, I still appreciated the way it all came together. I liked the ending and felt that it worked well with the rest of the story.
Overall, this was a fun and fast-paced read- it took me just a few hours to finish. Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Net Galley for the advanced copy. This was a new author for me. The book started out strong and I was instantly intrigued, however it became a little far fetched and unbelievable. This book was just ok for me and I’d rate it 3 stars.

The Apartment Across the Hall by Jack Dane is a quick thriller that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Even though I was feeling extra sensitive while reading, I found myself teary-eyed multiple times because of the explicit details described in this novel. It’s undoubtedly one of my favorite ARCs to date, and I’ll never forget it.
Before I proceed with the rest of the review, I would like to note a few triggers I noticed while reading:
- suicidal thoughts
- institutionalization
- starvation
- torture (including music being blasted into one’s ears while handcuffed to a chair, rendering them deaf)
- forced cheating
If any of the aforementioned triggers may be triggering for you, please approach this novel with caution.
Moving along, the story centers around Salem Ripley, a woman who moves into a New York City apartment only to discover it’s not exactly what she was expecting. Still, given her tumultuous past, she feels lucky to find a place at all. Salem becomes intrigued by her neighbor, Victor—a handsome man whose relationship with his girlfriend she can’t help but obsess over. Through the peephole of her door, Salem begins to notice Victor with not just one woman but another, and another. Soon, an eerie feeling takes hold, making her suspect something is terribly wrong. She becomes convinced that lives are at stake, and she must uncover the mystery of the apartment across the hall.
This novel gripped me from the beginning, especially as the suspense escalated. Jack Dane weaves twists and turns into the narrative with incredible finesse. Near the end, I had to pause reading just to take a breath because the tension became so intense—but I couldn’t stay away for long. One particularly explicit scene of torture left me reeling and on the verge of tears. Without spoiling anything, let’s just say this book will make you look much closer at the next apartment you consider renting.
While the story is relatively short, the beginning felt a bit slow to me. I’m not a fan of slow-burn thrillers, and although this wasn’t unbearably slow, I found myself wishing the pace picked up sooner. Additionally, one of the major twists near the end was predictable, which was a little disappointing. Perhaps adding another character or redirecting the reader’s focus could have made the twist less obvious. Then again, insightful readers like us can’t be fooled that easily . . . right?
Overall, The Apartment Across the Hall earned a 4/5 for being an incredibly twisty, chilling thriller that moved me deeply. Despite a slow start and a slightly predictable twist, the novel’s suspenseful plot and emotional depth more than made up for its flaws. I can’t wait until this book becomes widely available.
A huge thanks to NetGalley and Back Alley Press for providing me with this Advanced Reader’s Copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Affordable apartments are hard to find in New York, so Salem Ripley takes what she can get, especially after potential landlords see her background check. The place has a lot of problems, but she needs a place to live, as unpleasant as the building is. One neighbor plays deafeningly loud cop shows all night long. The guy across the hall brings new women to his apartment one after another -- and no matter how closely she watches his door, she never sees a single one of them leave. This short, fast paced thiller is absolutely wild. I found Salem hard to like, but it was an interesting read.

I adored this book so much, it was so gripping from the start, everything was perfection, I did not see the end coming.

Jack Dane’s The Apartment Across the Hall is a taut, psychological thriller that pulls readers into a world of obsession, paranoia, and deadly secrets. With its sharp urban setting and a protagonist whose curiosity might just get her killed, the novel is a gripping exploration of how far someone will go to uncover the truth—or protect themselves from it.
The story centers on Salem Ripley, a young woman looking for a fresh start in New York City. Her new apartment may be disappointing, but it offers her a chance to rebuild after a troubled past. Things take a sinister turn when she becomes fixated on her neighbor across the hall: a tall, dark, and enigmatic man who seems to lead a perfect life with his beautiful girlfriend. But appearances deceive, and Salem soon notices a disturbing pattern—other women entering the apartment and never reappearing.
Dane’s portrayal of Salem is deeply compelling. She’s flawed and vulnerable, carrying the weight of past mistakes that shape her decisions. Her fixation on her neighbor is as much about distraction as it is about a genuine desire to protect others, and this duality makes her a relatable yet unreliable narrator. Readers will find themselves questioning Salem’s motives, her perceptions, and even her sanity as the story progresses.
The tension in The Apartment Across the Hall is palpable. Dane expertly builds suspense with small, unsettling details—a lingering look, a locked door, a muffled sound in the night. The confined setting of the apartment building enhances the claustrophobic atmosphere, making readers feel as trapped as Salem. The narrative pacing is relentless, with each new revelation pulling the reader deeper into the mystery and closer to danger.
What sets this novel apart is its ability to blur the lines between right and wrong, perception and reality. Salem’s snooping feels both justified and intrusive, forcing readers to confront their own moral boundaries. The climax is shocking yet inevitable, tying together threads in a way that leaves readers questioning how much they can ever truly know about the people around them.
The Apartment Across the Hall is a masterclass in psychological suspense. With its evocative writing, deeply flawed protagonist, and chilling twists, it’s a must-read for fans of domestic thrillers like The Girl on the Train or Rear Window. Jack Dane has crafted a story that will keep you up at night—both from the sheer thrill of the read and the haunting afterthoughts it leaves behind.

This was a short but engaging thriller. Most of the chapters are from the view of Sal, our protagonist, but we do read some from her neighbour across the hall and his POV. The writing is captivating and made me want to continue reading. Chapters are also short which for me makes me read faster as I want to read and with chapters being short, I continue! I wasn't expecting the twist in the end, I had some idea of where it was heading but didn't expect it which is, for me, rare as many psychological thrillers, you have an understanding of what will happen. This is a different from thrillers I have read recently and pleasantly surprised

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was a very bizarre book. At first I was questioning where this one was headed and how it would end. I was wondering about why certain characters were in there as well. Until the end. Holy moly. I didn’t expect that turn of events. Several turns actually.
A little weird but worth reading to the end for the surprises.

WOW!! What an intense and gripping read! This is a new to me author, and this book did not disappoint. It started 2025 perfectly. I picked this book solely based on the title and cover. I went into this blind without reading the blurb, and it was such a pleasant surprise.
Salem moves into a dilapidated apartment building, and she soon finds out that her neighbor has a constant stream of different women in his apartment. As she snoop more and more, she discovers things are not as she thinks...they're worse!
The author's writing style is one of pure delight. I was so engrossed in this book. The story had my heart racing the entire time and I furiously flew through this book needing to know what was going to happen. I would've never guessed what was going on! This book gave me everything that I needed in a psych thriller. An engrossing plot, a fierce main character, and a well thought out creepiness factor. Job well done!
Thank you NetGalley and Back Alley Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
