Did not receive/read in time due to technical error on kindle/tablet. Not having left feedback has due to error has impacted my shelves. Leaving 4 stars.
DNF. I wanted to like it with all the hype surrounding it, but it was trite and the time hoping not clear. Just didn't hit the right now for me
Luckiest Girl Alive, by Jessica Knoll, is told in two different timelines - when Ani FaNelli is a teenager at the prestigious Bradley School and current day Ani about to get married and an editor for Women's Magazine. She's living the life she always wanted, right? She's about to participate in a documentary focusing on the secrets of her past. Ani has been through a lot and she's ready to put everything out there now, but will telling the truth come at the cost of the life she has built for herself now? Luckiest Girl Alive is filled with twists and turns you don't see coming and kept me up for hours past my bedtime! I can't wait for the Netflix film to come out later this year to see it all played out on film.
At the beginning I had a bit of trouble getting the story, I wanted to abandon it but then it caught me and kept me glued to the pages, I was curious to discover the ending.
TifAni or Finny has a seemingly splendid life: a great job, a future husband, rich and kind, a dizzying wardrobe. She actually has so many secrets that she kept hidden for years. She has had a very difficult adolescence but none of the people she is now seeing knows it. But she must finally face it if she really wants to live.
I didn't particularly love the protagonist, I never managed to tune into her. The pace was quite slow despite the continuous flashbacks between present and high school. I liked the style of the writer, not simple but perfect for this story, with many turns of phrase.
It is a very strong story, which deals with very delicate issues such as bullying, rape, eating disorders, it is a perfect cross-section of today's society.
Mystery, grit, shock, and twists - all things present in Knoll's book, and all things you want in a psychological thriller. Some things are hard to read, and I do feel there should be a trigger warning in the synopsis.
The characters were pretty unlikable, but that is my only complaint. Everything else about the book just worked and it delivered an intense and captivating story.
The story was interesting to to keep me reading till the end. I I could not relate to the main character at all. She's obsessed with looking her best and outward appearances. I feel like at times she is stuck in her teenager years. When it is explained what happened to her, it does help you understand why she is the way she is. The plot was good and had a few twists that made reading this book enjoyable. I would recommend this book to others!
A good book for discussion groups. Timely topic and will lead to good discussions. I look forward to more from this author.
I loved loved loved loved this book! I know some people found the protagonist unlikeable but what's wrong with an unlikeable female character? Why do women have to be likeable? Ani isn't likeable. Ani is blunt, raw and full of rage.
Ani has it all: the perfect job, fiancé, the lush apartment. But behind that tough exterior is a vulnerable young, Ani, Tifani, who threatens to come out when a documentary film-maker contacts her regarding a tragic event that took place in Ani's old high school. Scenes from Ani's childhood is drip-fed to us and we find out what that tragic event was I found myself crying like a baby.
A horrific crime lies at the centre of this book buts it's emotionally gut-wrenching. Bring tissues.
