A Short Fast-Paced Thriller

I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Justis Bolding. This was my first experience of Megan Lally's writing and at first I thought that it wouldn't be for me with very obvious attempts to tell the reader we were not going to find out about "The Incident..." any time soon, however the pace of the book quickly had me hooked and I was keen to continue and find out more. The novel works between present day and "before" and the split of this works well for the story and I was equally invested in both parts of the book. There were not many likeable characters in the book but where other people have rated the book down for this, I didn't mind disliking them as I enjoyed that I had feelings towards them. For me what lowered the rating on this book was the there felt like there were too many plot holes, the ending, which was fairly predictable, felt rushed. Top marks to the narrator Justis Bolding who brought the intensity for this face paced story.

As I was listening to this book I kept thinking there is no way I could possibly care about these terrible things that are happening to this awful main character. Turns out that may have been the point. A testament to the author and her writing that I hated Brooke from almost page 1. I really enjoyed watching the story unfold. I felt the tension like I was there. This was really well written.

Many thanks to NetGalley and RB Media for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. Justis Bolding does a great job narrating this and makes it a realistic listen!

Classic highschool golden girl, Brooke Goodwin, who always has the best looks, clothes, car, perfect grades, and an intense extracurricular program, appears to be the perfect student, daughter, and friend until her world is broken apart by a drowning death at her family's lake house. A tragic boat accident during a party she secretly organized at her parents' lake house takes the life of Claire, her classmate and arch-nemesis. Brooke has been threatened in public and in private, and been forced to endure multiple tire slashings, newspaperings of her car and other bullying for the past 6 months while she is trying to lay low and get on with her life at college.

On the day that the "Ivies" notify students of their acceptance, the seniors traditionally throw a huge party that Brooke really does not want to attend but does so at her BFF Jen's insistence. But, after the party, a Bronco is tailgating her and her unknown caller is escalating his threats, so Brooke resolves to beat her tormentor at his own game.

This is such a suspenseful and fast paced story! I literally almost had an anxiety attack in the first couple of chapters! The tension build up is palpable. While I did not like most of the characters, I did find that there were some implausibilities in the plot line but nothing I could not overcome. This is definitely more of a YA thriller and overall, a 4 star read!

Title: No Place Left to Hide
By: Megan Lally
Narrated by: Justis Bolding

Wow, this is the kind of young adult thriller that would have gotten me to open a book as a teenager!

If you like the drama of Pretty Little Liars, you will eat this one up!

It starts off following a high-school senior on a normal day of school while she waits for her college acceptance letter. Suddenly, things take a turn and get intense quickly! Car chases, back-stabbing friends, family drama, what more could you want in a YA thriller 😂

This book is one you can fly through in one sitting!

I read this with my bookclub of 24 and we all had a blast reading!

If you haven't read Megan's debut, THAT'S NOT MY NAME, make sure you read that one too!

A well-crafted YA thriller with multiple suspects and layers of intrigue and suspense. There was a sense of danger and urgency throughout. It’s full of teenage angst with a side of murder!! The insufferable Goodwins!!
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Absolutely loved this book! Both of Megan Lally's books will go down in my favorite mystery reads that I recommend to others. The narrator was really captivating and expressive. I actually received this book before as an DRC (digital review copy) and this audiobook was just as great. Thank you to Netgalley and RBmedia for this audiobook ARC! I have copied my previous review below, as my feelings still stand:

4.75 stars! Face paced. Totally captivating. Heart stopping.

This is definitely an action packed read. If you like Megan Lally’s last novel, That’s Not My Name, buckle up for the ride of Brooke’s life (literally). I completely devoured this book over the span of two nights. I stayed up super late last night because I absolutely could not put it down. This thriller is nonstop suspense and jaw dropping twists and turns. As someone who reads a lot, I find a lot of thriller/suspense plots pretty easy to figure out but this one… DUDE THIS ONE! From beginning to end, I had no idea what was going to come next. I felt every moment of moment and seized breath that Brooke did in this story. I have found that YA thriller/suspense books are more enjoyable for me than traditional adult ones.

100% recommend this book to readers who want to dip their toes into thriller books and seasoned readers alike! I took a tiny bit off of my rating because I felt like the ending wrapped up a bit too abruptly and left me a lot of unanswered questions. However, the overall conclusion was satisfying. Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for this arc.

Brooke Goodwin is the perfect student and daughter. Or at least that is what she expects of herself: perfection. Her family's name and reputation are everything and she has to do her part to keep up that role. She has just gotten her acceptance letter from Yale and the guy of her dreams is available and has his eye on her! When Brooke's best friend Jen asks her to come to a celebration party, Brooke is not sure it's worth the risk. But dream guy will be there, and with Jen's promise of no drinking, no trouble, and home before curfew, what could go wrong? Brooke knows all too well what could go wrong... after all, someone died at her party 6 months ago.

This book was fast paced and full of tension. I don't usually read Young Adult, but the description and rave reviews from Megan Lally's first book, That's Not My Name, intrigued me. No Place Left to Hide hooked me and held my attention though the whole ride with a story you will love to hate. Not going to give too much on this one, as I think it is a story to go into blind and enjoy the twisty ride.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and RBmedia for the audiobook for review.

I enjoyed this one it was fast paced and easy to follow. I did find it to be somewhat predictable and the story line didn't feel original, The audiobook version of this was great. I listened to it in under 24 hours and the narrator was fantastic.

Was unaware that this was YA. I heard the hype around this book, however, I just could not get into it as much as I would have hoped. I really enjoy Lally's writing style, but I could not relate to any of these characters. I did enjoy the narrator, however. It is such a quick read if you are looking for something more fast paced in thr YA realm.

Was excited to read this after That's Not my Name was my favorite YA thriller of 2024. This didn't let me down and was a fun, intense read.

Brooke has worked hard to maintain perfection in all aspects of her life. She is working to recover after an "incident" that changed her life forever and almost ruined her prominent family name. Since the incident, her parents haven't been the same and everyone has treated her differently. After finding out she got into Yale, she is talked into enjoying her first social night out since the incident. She thinks this will change everything and give her a fresh start. On her way home with her best friend, Jenna, she notices a truck tailing her. She wonders if this has anything to do with the calls, slashed tires, and newspaper clippings left about the special investigation into the incident. Someone is searching for secrets she does not want to reveal. It was an intense action thriller chase as they travel into a barren area with no cell service, at least 40 minutes away from the next town.

The book goes from present POV to the past POV detailing the incident that changed everything. It involved Claire, Brooke's old best friend who had a family scandal that made her move out of town. Claire shows up in Brooke's life again at a party and ruins everything. But did Brooke cause her death? This was a fun, fast paced suspenseful read. Similar to That's Not My Name, it doesn't read as YA in my opinion and I enjoyed it very much as an adult!

4.5 stars! 💫 O. M. G. No Place Left to Hide had me hooked from the first page to the very last! Huge shoutout to RBmedia and NetGalley for the ALC! 🙌 It’s a YA thriller packed with jaw-dropping twists and all the high-drama suspense you can handle. One minute, I'm like, “I totally got this,” and then—BOOM—twist after twist, leaving me shook! 🚨

✧ High-Stakes Drama 🔥
✧ Secrets & Lies 🤫
✧ Twisted Revenge 😈
✧ Suspense That Won't Quit ⏳
✧ Heart-Stopping Chase Scenes 🏃‍♀️
✧ Unreliable Narrators 🤥

Okay, so here’s the sitch: Brooke's life was perfect—perfect grades, perfect everything… until one wild party at her lake house turned into a nightmare. Someone ends up dead, and now she’s got some serious consequences coming her way. Someone’s lurking in the shadows, and it’s turning her life into a full-blown horror show!

The drama? OMG, it was so high school, so messy, but so entertaining. I was ALL in for the ride. The pacing? A++! BUT. The characters… um, yeah. They were all kinds of problematic. I couldn’t root for ANY of them. Brooke, poor girl, was stuck in a cycle of bad decisions, and honestly, I was like, “Can someone just do something smart for once?!”

As for the ending? 😵 WHOA. Didn’t see that coming. Megan really knows how to keep you on your toes! The twists were INSANE, though there were a couple of plot holes that left me scratching my head (like, um, why did only one person get caught?). But despite that, I was STILL glued to the page the whole time! 📚💨

And I have to give major praise to the narrator, Justis Bolding. 🎧 She brought the intensity of the story to life in such a gripping way—her pacing, her tone, the way she conveyed the tension… it was perfect for this kind of thriller. I was totally immersed in the story because of her performance! 🌟

Would I recommend this? Heck yeah, if you’re into YA thrillers that will keep you up at night with all the suspense, drama, and revenge. Get on it, like, NOW! 🙌

Rating 4/5 ⭐️

This was such a fun listen!
It kept me guessing the whole book and really left you wondering what was going to happen next.

Brooke is a popular teen about to graduate and go off to college. Her family is really well known in the community. She is used to getting her way, not having consequences, and having the perfect image.

She is trying to move past an incident and start a new life some where else, but someone won’t let her forget it. As she and her friend are driving home they are being chased and told to confess what really happened during that incident.

This book switches between the past and present. It gives you two different timelines which really allows for you to grasp and understand what is happening and why it is happening. The characters were really well drawn out.

This is the perfect thriller for teens, YA, and adults. It is a super quick listen, the narrator was perfect, and the plot was riveting.

Thank you to NetGalley, the Publisher, and the author for the ARC.

Megan Lally’s first book, That’s Not My Name, was on my shortlist for my favorite book last year. I have recommended that one to countless people, all with amazing feedback. When I saw this book, the cover made me think of her last book, and it immediately got me excited. This book did not disappoint. It was a rollercoaster, and I loved every moment.

The book’s POV is from Brooke, but it’s across two timelines. One timeline is the present day, and one is simply just being called before. Before referring to an incident that Brooke will fight to keep hidden.

It’s hard to go into details without spoilers, so I won’t say much. I will say the way the present day and before are woven together is perfect. There are a few twists that you will see coming, but that still doesn’t affect the power they have.

Brooke comes off as a character that you don’t want to like, and the more you learn about Brooke, the more you will dislike her. The reveals that come out about both Brooke and her family, while not always shocking, always make you hate them all.

I love it when an author can pull this off. She gives you an unlikable character that just does crappy things, and they still managed to get you so invested in the story.

Everyone should have this on their list of books to check out in 2025.

3.5 Rated up
In this fast-paced YA thriller, Brooke is (trying) to live her best life as her past keeps coming to haunt her. Who is messing with her? Who wants her to keep reliving the worst night of her life when she just wants to move on. I couldn't get enough of this and NEEDED to find out- the answers did not disappoint 👏🏼

Just finished a wild ride! 🎢 This book had me on the edge of my seat with its fast pace and mounting tension. The flip between past and present kept me hooked, and those mini cliffhangers? Pure genius! Even if the characters were a bit outlandish, the heart-pounding action made it all kind of worth it! 📚💥

Brooke is a perfectionist who values her image above all else. After a traumatic incident, she works hard to maintain a perfect life. When she gets into her dream university, she agrees to celebrate with her classmates. However, her night takes a turn for the worse when someone begins aggressively tailing her and her best friend on their way home. The mysterious driver seems to know the truth about the incident, and Brooke must confront her worst fears in order to survive.

The author discussed the challenges of writing a new book after achieving great success with a previous one. I can only imagine the pressure they must feel. While I have the luxury of sitting back and enjoying some incredible books, offering my honest opinions, it's not fair to overlook the immense pressure authors face.

I found this book to be enjoyable, although it's important to remember that the target audience is young adults, so it may not fit the typical thriller mold. The writing style was engaging, and I appreciated that the plot didn't give away too much too soon. The characters were portrayed as typical teenagers dealing with drama in their lives, some of whom were insufferable due to their privileged lifestyles and entitled attitudes. It's crucial to keep in mind that this is a young adult book, as there were moments that might elicit an eye roll.

While some aspects of the story may have been a bit far-fetched for real life, they were still somehow believable. The writing was suspenseful, dramatic, and dark, catering to the target audience while still providing an enjoyable read. Although I preferred the first book, I appreciate the author's consistency in maintaining the tone and style.

If you're a fan of heart-pounding, dark read with unresolved teenage drama, or enjoy stories of revenge among mean kids, this book is for you. It's a binge-worthy read with unexpected twists and turns, particularly as the story reaches its conclusion.

Thank you, Sourcebooks Fire and RBmedia, for the digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Excellent book! I loved the author’s debut novel so I snatched this ARC up as soon as I soon her name on it! I went into it completely blind and was drawn in immediately. I listened to the audiobook in less than a day, the narrator was perfect! Highly recommend this one and I cannot wait for her next book!
