I didn't get around to reading this back when I was approved for it and I'm now going through my archived titles I never reviewed. My reading tastes have changed so I am no longer interested in young adult books.
The concept of this book promised wonderful things: a unique blend of contemporary young adult themes with representation of a personality disorder and a semi-surreal plot. Unfortunately, the convolutions through which the plot ultimately forces the reader are a bit too much to maintain coherence, and this is, unfortunately, a book which really needs coherence. It seems a disservice to the neurodivergent community to turn a disassociative disorder into a plot device.
This is a wonderfully written journey to self discovery and really understanding the people we love. The adventure Clara and Elias embark on is full of funny moments and life lessons. We can all relate to Clara running from her past and Elias trying to figure out who he wants to be. I loved this story and will recommend it for my reading groups.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. Reads like a young adult book. She's running from something and he, well, there are two of him and you never know how long each one is going to stay around. She wants to help or maybe she wants to use him to help herself. I'm not a fan of the ending, which then clouded my view of the whole book.
