I wish I didn't start this series with this novel . Overall a good mystery and entertaining characters.

This is the first book I've read in this series and I'm convinced the meat of this story got left behind in another book.

There was no character development. They were likeable but not very interesting. There was no depth to their personalities and very little emotion. The step daughter was mildly interesting, but not enough that I remembered her name more than a day after reading the book.

Martina and her team were competent. I never once doubted they'd handle things. Unfortunately, they were so competent the story was too neatly tied up. The author remedied that with the idiot trope. A sudden series of really stupid decisions from normally intelligent characters that created the final climax of the story.

Overall, It was an okay way to waste an afternoon but I won't be seeking out the rest in the series.

I waited patiently to see if I was chosen from NetGalley and wahoo, yes, finally! I have loved Martina Monroe from the first book. She is a real go getter and will stop and nothing to find the truth, within the bounds of process of the law, because she wants her investigation to stick. This book is suspenseful with some unexpected twists that I didn’t see coming. Sad that I am done, but again back to waiting on Martina’s next case to solve. It had great suspense, murder, mystery, gaslighting, double crossing, intriguing, and a few wild twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting! I highly recommend reading this book!
