This novel takes place at the outbreak of the Iceni revolt whilst most of the Roman soldiers are far to the west quelling Tribes hostile to Roman rule.
The procurator sparks disent by taking advantage of the Iceni king's death to ignoe his will and abuses Boudica and has his soldiers assault her daughters.
Found it a bit laboured and with too much details of names and tribes to follow the story comfortably. It never quite gets going.

I was interested in this book because I’ve always been intrigued by Boudicca and her impact on history. The book started out strong. The book opens with the heart wrenching dramatization of how the Roman emperor disregards Boudicca’s recently deceased husband’s will to leave the Iceni clan under Boudicca’s control. He sends troops to inform Queen Boudicca of this blow to the clan and when Boudicca and some of her people stand up to the Romans, they are met with brutal violence. That was gripping. However, after that section of the book, it got very confusing with lots of Latin names and places that made it difficult to keep things straight. The books started as a 5-star read but the last 75% was too confusing to enjoy.

I really wanted to love this book. The beginning started out strong, I got to 20% and persisted to 52% but there were too many side characters. I’m interested in the story of Boudicca and the Iceni, I have a little knowledge of it but I feel like this book is for someone who has much more knowledge than myself. Personally I would much prefer the book if it focused on one main character
