Short and cute with a terrific twist ending, but I just want to know one thing: what kind of psycho asks to use a stranger's bathroom, and then leaves the door open so the stranger can talk to you while you pee????

Despite being a bit rough around the edges when it comes to smoothness of translation, "Exquisite Corpse"
by Pénélope Bagieu makes for a thought-provoking, lovely little contemplation on the ways in which our lives are informed by sex and the maturation into adulthood. The art direction is quite nice, and demonstrates Bagieu's not-inconsiderable artistic chops; the pages follow a fairly traditional graphic novel format, with pages broken up into mostly-uniform rectilinear shapes, with few exceptions and no "coloring outside the lines" (by which I mean, there is little experimentation with form, or breakages free from the traditional panel format). Artistically, I am reminded of Alison Bechdel's "Are You My Mother," and it also makes for a useful comparison in terms of content, in that "Exquisite Corpse" deals with sophisticated material in an easily accessible format, with an almost misleadingly simple visual veneer. Don't mistake me; this is a book that deals with tough issues, and has a lot to say that's worth paying attention to. I look forward to further work from this author.
