This is a great combination of a truly engaging main character with a strong plot which is also a bit whackadoodle. For some reason, the writing brought to mind Tristram Shandy, even though it was not the same stream of consciousness style. Just something about it reminded me of that unusual, sharp style of writing. For me, this was a refreshing approach to story telling.

I had not heard of the author before seeing this one, but was mightily intrigued by whole package - the author name, title, cover art and blurb together really seemed unusual and to offer great potential. Unfortunately, I found that intriguing nature to not suit my reading style - and I found it pretty early on.
I have a feeling that Memphis' books are going to either completely resonate, creating a fan-for-life, or fail to do so at all. His is an original and unique voice that is part snark, part wit, and part literary fiction. It should have been a recipe that worked for me, but for some reason I struggled from the first pages. I just couldn't find my way into the story, and don't really know why.
Sometimes readers and authors just don't mesh - and unfortunately that was the case here... Three stars because I couldn't evaluate it fully.
