This was a tough one to get through. The main character is so dumb it's painful. The story is excruciatingly repetitive and boring. The twist that finally comes 90% in is not enough to redeem it.

Thanks to NetGalley, Joffe Books, and Choc Lit for the ARC.

Exactly what I want when I pick up a thriller! Suspenseful, creepy, mysterious and exciting.

This story follows Jane, she and her husband live an idyllic life until a secret from the past comes back to haunt her.

Exceptionally well written psychological thriller. I would recommend checking this out!

Sadie Ryan’s The Witness is a gripping psychological thriller that masterfully blurs the line between perception and reality. The protagonist, Jane, is portrayed with such depth and complexity that her unraveling feels both chilling and compelling. Ryan takes readers on a wild ride, making you question, along with Jane, what’s real and what’s not.

At its core, the story offers much more than Jane’s apparent descent into madness. Beneath the surface lies a dark web of potential murder, drugging, and the ever-present fear of harm to her family. The stakes are high throughout, and the tension builds steadily, culminating in a shocking twist that redefines everything you thought you knew.

Ryan’s pacing is impeccable, with each chapter heightening the suspense and pulling you deeper into Jane’s world. The sense of paranoia is palpable, and the author expertly keeps readers on edge, guessing until the very end.

With its intricate plot, strong character development, and an unforgettable twist, The Witness is a standout thriller. It’s a must-read for fans of psychological suspense, and it will leave you questioning the truth long after you’ve turned the final page. Highly recommended!

I was quietly enjoying this book, thinking 'yep, I know where this is going...' and then boom! Genius plot twist!

The story is that of Jane, a woman of whom a convicted murderer believes she is 'the witness' responsible for his conviction. Her life with her musician husband and teenage daughter is ticking along nicely until she receives the news that the killer is being released....cue some crazy trickery leading to all sorts of chaos in Jane's life! As a reader it is (deliberately) unclear whether Jane is paranoid and has a covert drinking problem, or whether her paranoia is justified and her seemingly normal neighbours are somehow complicit. I wont say more for fear of inadvertently providing spoilers, but I will say this book is pretty good and well worth taking a chance on!

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

The Witness follows Jane, a happily married book illustrator. She and her musician husband move to a house by a lake and live an idyllic life until Jane's scret from the past comes back to haunt her. 10 years ago she witnessed a murder and testified in the trial that sent the murderer to jail. Now he's been released early and naturally she's scared. She buried this and never told anyone, not even her husband. Suddenly, weird things start to happen when he goes away for work and leaves her alone in the house. Things move around the house, doors are left open, and so on. She recently quit drinking, but wine bottles suddenly appear on the kitchen table. Her already fragile mental health takes a turn for the worse when her beloved dog suddenly passes away. One day she hears a scream and calls the police, but her neighbours testify they heard nothing. Everyone starts to worry about Jane's mental health and she begins to think she might be losing her mind. And then, she receives a message on her phone...

I loved this book and devoured it in a few hours. I feel like the story was different to what's out there. Having read a lot of thrillers, I thought I knew where the story was going but I really didn't. This is probably the first book I've read in a long time where the twist really caught me by surprise! I gasped out loud when I read it. That alone is worthy of praise.

My only criticism is that the beginning is a bit of a slow burner and I confess I skimmed through a pages during the first half of the book. Maybe I'm being impatient! It also took me a bit to get used to the third person POV, but that's just me. The pace picked up during the second part, and then it became a page-turner. I simply had to know what would happen next.

There's a few characters in this book, and every character could be in on it. How do I review this book without spoiling things? Let's say I suspected everyone, but couldn't work out what the main mystery had to do with everyone else and why they were doing what they were doing. Jane is frustrating at times but when the twist is revealed, it all comes together and her actions make sense.

In my opinion the ending was great, but I can see how a lot of people might hate it. The way the main character fixes her problem is insane but it worked for me. I was dreading a clichéd end, so I absolutely loved that we didn't get the usual 'closed ending' where everything is explained. In my opinion the end will stay with you and make you think about it for a while.

The narrative is very visual. A few scenes reminded me a bit of Rear Window by Hitchcock and I could picture things happening in my mind. I feel like if this had been released 10-15 years ago, it would've been a successful big screen adaption, similar to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. No-one goes to the cinema anymore, but I'm crossing my fingers that this gets made into a Netflix movie.

Many thanks to netgalley, the author and Joffe books for approving my request to read this book.

The Witness is a suspenseful psychological thriller in which we meet Jane who is happy and content in her life only to have it disturbed by a chilling message from someone from her past.

As Jane life starts to spiral at great speed she realises she has no option but to face her past head on but who if anybody can she trust?

I enjoyed this story and liked how it ended, I would definitely recommend if you are a fan of this particular genre.

This is a well written thought out thriller by a seasoned author. This was definitely a book that felt like a new story. I’ve read a lot of books that seem to have the same “formula” most thrillers use. Nothing is what it seems nd it ties you on a wild ride from beginning to end.

#TheWitness #NetGalley is an incredible story of secrets and lies, which soon begin to unravel when Curtis Murk is paroled.
Jane has a very good life, a beautiful home, a caring, loving husband, a daughter and her rescue pup.
What her family doesn't know is that she's been keeping a secret, a serious one, that begins to unravel when the man she put away ten years is released from prison.
That's when the threats begin, the odd events, and scenes that cause her family to think she's become unhinged.
This story took me on such a wild ride, I couldn't put it down. The twists and turns were incredible and with each reveal, I gasped even more.
I loved this book and I hope there's another one, because that ending!!!!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Jane has a great marriage and a beautiful teenage daughter. She spends her days illustrating books in her stunning lakeside home. Her life is as close to perfect as she could imagine. She’s been lying to her husband for a decade. Ten years ago, Jane witnessed an unspeakable crime. Her testimony put Curtis Murk in prison for manslaughter. She never told her husband. That’s not the only secret she’s hiding from him! Great book! This book had great suspense, murder, mystery, family secrets, intrigue, a shocking sort of who done it that I did not see coming! And some wild twists!! The story was very interesting! I highly recommend reading this book! Thank you NetGalley and Joffe books for sharing this book with me! Can’t wait for more!
