A thriller exploring the dark side of police culture and family trauma. Bree and Jake's lives are turned upside down when crime follows them home, leading to a series of disturbing events. As they try to protect their family, they are faced with guilt, grief, and haunting nightmares. Every Fall delves into themes of trauma and toxicity in the police force, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

This book is incredibly dark and chilling, and I absolutely loved it! The fast-paced narrative includes some paranormal elements that immediately drew me in and left me wanting more. The story, at times, was frustrating, adding a touch of reality that made the paranormal aspects feel even more plausible.

I particularly enjoyed the character development and the eerie atmosphere of the old, creepy house. These elements really enhanced the overall story and kept me engaged until the very end. The plot twists took me by surprise, but I found them to be incredibly satisfying. Thank you NetGalley, the author and the publisher for access to the arc audiobook.

This novel tackles several weighty themes:

- The impact of police work on family life
- Mental health stigma in law enforcement
- Postpartum depression and maternal isolation
- The thin line between supernatural and psychological horror
- Marriage under extreme stress
- The importance of support systems

Every Fall by Angela Douglas is a chilling and intense thriller that delves deep into the complexities of family trauma and the dark side of police culture. Set in the crime-ridden city of East Bernheim, it follows Bree, a woman who thought she could handle the challenges of being married to a beat cop. But as crime begins to invade their home and threaten their safety, Bree and her husband, Jake, make the decision to move to a safer neighborhood, hoping for a fresh start.

However, as Bree’s pregnancy with their second child progresses, she begins experiencing disturbing dreams and hearing voices. When tragedy strikes Jake on the job, his grief spirals out of control, leaving him emotionally distant and dangerous. Bree, isolated and struggling, is forced to protect her children from the very person she once trusted to keep them safe.

Douglas weaves a gripping tale of tension, fear, and psychological horror, exploring the effects of toxic masculinity within the police force and the ripple effects of trauma. The audiobook's pacing keeps listeners on edge as it builds an atmosphere of dread and unease, leading to a terrifying climax.

Every Fall is a hard-hitting thriller that is as emotionally compelling as it is suspenseful. With its exploration of difficult topics like postpartum depression, spousal abuse, and grief, it offers both a gripping narrative and a thought-provoking examination of personal and societal struggles. Fans of Karin Slaughter and Lisa Gardner will find this book a riveting and haunting listen.

4 stars! 🌟 A huge thanks to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the ALC! 💌 I couldn't stop listening to Every Fall by Angela Douglas, narrated by Andi Arndt and George Newbern! 🎧💥 This thriller had me on the edge of my seat from the first page, and wow, the narrators totally brought it to life!

Bree and Jake's story is intense! She thought life with a beat cop would be tough, but when crime follows them home, things get seriously dark. The dual POVs between Bree and Jake are gripping—both Andi and George do an AMAZING job capturing the tension and raw emotions. 🎙️✨ Bree's struggles felt so real, and I was with her every step of the way, especially as things got creepy with the house. Seriously, the tension was STRONG.

There are some super intense moments in this one, both emotionally and physically. The dark side of police culture, family trauma, and maybe some paranormal vibes kept me guessing. 🏚️ The pacing is fast, and the story has this constant vibe of "what's going to happen next?!", which had me binge-listening! 📚⚡

I did feel a little bit of whiplash in some parts because the tone would shift dramatically, but honestly, it just added to the thrill and suspense! The writing is dark and gritty, and the narrators absolutely nailed the delivery of the tension. 👏

Highly recommend if you're into dark thrillers with a touch of the eerie and unpredictable. Definitely had my heart racing! Can't wait to see what Angela Douglas comes up with next! 💫

CW: postpartum depression, spousal abuse, infidelity, violence, opioids, and death.

💡 P.S. The narrators' performances are next-level! If you're an audiobook lover, don't miss this one! 🎧

**Review of *Every Fall* by Angela Douglas**

Angela Douglas does a fantastic job developing rich, multidimensional characters in *Every Fall*, making it easy to become invested in their lives. However, the book felt overstuffed with too many storylines that never fully came together by the end. The blend of domestic drama, paranormal elements, and police procedural aspects made for an interesting premise, but the supernatural elements, in particular, felt out of place in the overall narrative.

There were several intriguing subplots—like Riley’s disappearance at the park—that seemed significant but were left unresolved, making the ending feel incomplete. If the book had chosen one direction to fully explore rather than juggling multiple themes, it would have been a much stronger and more cohesive read.

That said, the narration was excellent, bringing depth to the characters and keeping me engaged even when the plot felt scattered. If you enjoy character-driven stories and don’t mind some unanswered questions, this might still be worth picking up.

Angela Douglas' debut, EVERY FALL, is a domestic suspense novel that delves into a troubled marriage from both perspectives. It also explores emotionally charged topics and incorporates a twist of the supernatural, leading to a jaw-dropping conclusion.

While present, the supernatural element is not the story's primary focus but rather a unique aspect that adds depth to the narrative.

About...

Bree and Jake (cop) are married with a son and a baby on the way and reside in a high-crime area due to being affordable.

However, one of Jake's bad guys finds out where he lives; they know it is time to move to a safer neighborhood in the suburbs.

They move an hour away to a more expensive and larger house, but Jake is always away (up to no good), leaving Bree at home pregnant with a young son. She begins to hear voices and has nightmares, possibly a sign of the emotional turmoil she is going through or something else.

At work, Jake goes through a traumatic experience that triggers survivor guilt, leading him into a downward spiral of depression and self-destructive behavior. He takes it out on his wife. This experience is pivotal in the story, shaping Jake's character and the following events.

However, he has no clue what game of obsession is being played and must save his family before it is too late. Or will Bree be strong enough to fight back and save herself and her two children when she learns of Jake's misdeeds? The suspense builds as the story unfolds.

My thoughts...

While I enjoyed the audiobook narrated by two favorites, Andi Arndt and George Newbern, as why I selected this title, I felt a lot was going on and would not describe this as anywhere close (per the description) to a Karin Slaughter or Lisa Gardner book (I have read all their books).

In addition, I typically do not care for supernatural or paranormal books and was going to knock off a star, but I am basing the rating on the audiobook performance more so than the book (I did not have the book, just the audio). However, I did like the neighbors and how that fits into saving the day. That was a nice twist.

Jake is not a likable character, and he behaves severely toward his wife and treats her disrespectfully. I was so happy when she woke up. While the novel dives into the psychological aspects of trauma, infidelity, toxic police culture, motherhood, drugs, crime, abuse, and marriage, I would not classify this as a thriller but more of a domestic psychological suspense and a popcorn thriller. There were a lot of evil characters, and it dragged out before the action in the end.

Told from both perspectives, it allowed readers to get into the mind and thoughts of both husband and wife and another psycho. The insights further show how outside forces can deter a marriage and relationships.

Audiobook...

As mentioned, I enjoyed the narrators, Andi Arndt and George Newbern, who delivered an engaging performance, making the characters come alive.

Recs...

Since this is a debut, I look forward to reading more from the author. I would recommend EVERY FALL to fans of Daniel Hurst, Keri Beevis, Emily Shiner, and Valerie Keogh (Bookouture, Inkubator, and Boldwood Books).

I really wanted to like this more and I would have if I did not hate the husband as much as I did. I can start with all of the things I did like. I loved that this was set in Canada. There are really not a lot of thrillers set there. I also liked Bree and felt bad for her and I loved her doggy and the one friend she makes. What would would have been nice is if she had not been gaslit by her husband.

Now on to her husband! He has to be the most toxic male I have read in awhile. It is as if she decided to write a Canadian Joe Rogan. The story also didn't know exactly what it wanted to be

Every Fall by Angela Douglas is a psychological thriller about a couple struggling with complex emotions. Bree, a mother of two, feels overwhelmed and isolated after moving into a new home. Her husband, Jake, a police officer, is dealing with the recent murder of a friend on the force. As he drowns in guilt and turns to drinking, Bree starts experiencing strange hallucinations that make her question her sanity. As tensions rise between them, Bree wonders if her mind is playing tricks on her or if something more sinister is happening.

Angela Douglas does a great job of creating suspense and keeping the reader engaged. I would have liked to get a little closure on the ghost in the house debacle.

This book was one of the worst things I have ever listened to….not because of the narration….that was great….but even if you hear this book by the best narrator to your ear it wouldn’t make the “plot” of this book goods
It’s like the writer didn’t know if they wanted to write a haunted house book or one that about a terrible cop who was burned out having a strained domestic life and and a fling with a co worker who became obsessed with him. Instead of picking one they just jammed it all into one messy novel.

The fact it was suggested to people who like Karin Slaughter was laughable because….where….this had the worst plot, not a twist in sight and absolutely not a book you tear thru in one day because it’s so good.

The characters are all for the most part very unlikable. The cop was the worst of them all, such a toxic male ego that it was nauseating. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone.

None the less thank you for the ALC.

Every Fall is a gripping and intense thriller that dives deep into the dark side of police culture and family trauma. Bree and Jake’s life spirals as crime, guilt, and unsettling supernatural occurrences threaten their safety and sanity. The exploration of trauma and its impact on their relationship and family is powerful, and the atmosphere keeps you on edge. While the pacing is strong and the tension builds effectively, some parts felt predictable. Still, the emotional depth and dark twists make it a captivating read. 4 stars.

Not even George Newbern can save this one. He des a good job with the material, but this book fell very flat for me.

A book about paranormal activity in a new house? Sure. A domestic story with zero mystery about a cop's family dealing with burnout and tragedy? Why not. But the two together ... just didn't work.

I'm not sure whose idea it was to describe this as a good book for fans of Karin Slaughter, but - sorry, no. Again, there was no real mystery or central plot. This was just relentless domestic drama on the hell of being a cop/being married to a cop. The paranormal elements were previously undisclosed (I knew to expect them bc I read a review or two in advance) and existed only to wrap up the story and <spoiler> "save the day"</spoiler>. If we had had more of that backstory, that might've been interesting.

There was just SO MUCH going on that it overwhelmed the book:
* alcoholism
* unexpected tragic death
* haunted new house
* infidelity
* murder
* and of course, rehoming a beloved pet

This one just wasn't for me.

Being married to a cop doesn’t necessarily guarantee your safety!‍
Just beginning their marriage, Jake and Bree have already hit a rough patch. They live in a less than desirable neighborhood, raising one son with another baby on the way. Jake is a constable with the RCMP, and had the misfortune of crossing paths with the wrong criminals who are now threatening vengeance on Jake’s family.
Can I just stop here and say…I absolutely loathed Jake’s character.😡

The family packs up and moves to a home in the next neighborhood, hoping they stay far enough under the radar.
But Jake and Bree have more to fear than just the criminals. Maybe they should have looked a bit closer into the history of the house itself!

The author included a lot of issues (as mentioned in the blurb’s content warning). Maybe it was just too many? Perhaps just pick a couple and explore those more deeply?

I loved that the author is Canadian, and her storyline takes place in Canada. But do wish she would have given a bit more depth to the neighborhoods, cities and provinces.🍁

🎧I chose this audio based on the two narrators, Andi Arndt and George Newbern. And while they gave great performances the overall storyline just didn’t work for me.

I’m definitely an outlier here.🙋🏻‍♀️
Other readers had a much more positive experience so be sure to read those reviews for a balanced perspective.

3.5 ⭐️’s
Meeting and marrying quickly with a baby on the way, Bree knew a cops wife wasn’t going to be a piece of cake, but she wasn’t prepared for how hard it would actually be. When their lives are threatened by drug dealing thugs, Bree is anxious to move. Finding a beautiful, old home with everything they wanted seemed like a dream come true…but…when of things started to happen, Bree is not so sure about anything anymore. Pregnant with her second baby, she’s unsure if it’s hormones or if she’s going crazy. It only escalates after the birth. Jake is not the same person she married and when tragedy strikes on the job, Jake goes off the deep end. With all the odd occurrences, are they safe in the old house? Who is the woman in the window? Is Jake having an affair? Will they even survive? This was a dual read/listen and it was nice to have two narrators (Jake and Bree). The tension builds as the plot unfolds, but the overall story was on the unbelievable side. Thank you to Simon and Schuster, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for an ARC and ALC of this book.

I liked this book... but I swearrrr I thought this whole thing was going in a different direction!

Publisher's summary
Bree knew that life married to a beat cop would be tough, especially in the crime-infested city of East Bernheim, but she believes they will be fine living in the Burner even after she has their first child. Family life is manageable until one day crime follows them home, threatening their safety.
At a loss of how to keep his family safe and keep his job, Jake agrees to stretch their finances and move an hour away, to a bigger house in a somewhat better neighborhood. Their life seems to improve until Bree, heavily pregnant with their second child, begins to hear voices and suffer strange dreams. And then when tragedy strikes on the job, Jake enters a spiral of guilt and grief that degrades his grip on reality.
Bree, isolated and struggling, must protect her children from the one person she thought would always keep them safe. She and Jake are haunted in every way, and not just by whatever is lurking inside the house. A thriller that tackles toxic masculinity in police culture and trauma, Every Fall will have you on the edge of your seat.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC in audiobook format.

"Every Fall" by Angela Douglas is a chilling thriller that follows Bree, a new mother, as she struggles to adjust to life with a baby while her husband, Jake, a police officer, deals with the stresses of his job. When a crime occurs near their home, they decide to move to a new house in a seemingly safer neighborhood. However, they soon realize that their new home is not what it seems, and they are haunted by both the past and the present.

Douglas does a great job of creating a suspenseful atmosphere, and the story is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The characters are well-developed and complex, and you will find yourself invested in their lives and their struggles.

The audiobook version of this book is particularly well done, with narrators Andi Arndt and George Newbern bringing the characters to life. Arndt perfectly captures Bree's vulnerability and strength, while Newbern portrays Jake's inner turmoil with great skill.

"Every Fall" is a must-read for fans of thrillers. It is a suspenseful and atmospheric story that will stay with you long after you finish it.

Loved this one! I requested it because of the Narrators Andi Arndt and George Newbern, since I have listened to a couple other audiobooks with them. I didn't realize it would be set in Canada, which was fun, I haven't read enough books set close to home.
Fast paced thriller focused on family trauma with a satisfying ending. Minor supernatural/horror element, but since it's a mystery/ thriller, not a horror, it doesn't take center stage. Feels a bit like it gets pushed aside until the end of the book. The characters were easy to love (and hate!) and I was totally rooting for Bree, she deserved better!

Will look for more books by this author in the future. thanks NetGalley and Dreamscape for the free advanced copy

thank you to netgalley for the arc.

please check your TW/CW for this book.

this story foll0ws a woman named bree, who is married to a cop. she believes she is fine and safe, until crime starts to follow her family home. jake decides to move and while their lives are adjusting and bree is pregnant with their second baby, there is a tragedy that strikes that leaves jake to spiral.

this was a really fun and quick thriller read to get into. there is a little aspect of a horror element that is in this book and i found that to be interesting as well. the plot and the story is quite grounded and there aren't too many outlandish twists or reveals, making this an adequate read.

I'm surprised because this is the author's debut novel! Wow! Get ready to pick this one up for heart-racing moments with goosebumps! This reminded me of the Simone St. James type of vibe! You have Bree who is a new mother but also a stay-at-home mom living in a not-so-great neighborhood when she has a horrendous horrifying experience where a guy hurts himself trying to run away from the security of the story. Bree is panicking and calls her husband Jake, who is a police officer and he arrives on the scene and comforts Bree and takes her home. Together they decide for the family to find a new place for the family to live, especially since there is a gang out for Jake and his family after he made a case against them.
They find a house and just as they find it, Bree finds out she is pregnant. Jake now works an hour away and Bree is adjusting to the new life with a women's shelter next door to the latest rental house. While slowly it seems like everything is looking up. Bree is starting to be on edge because she is having creepy experiences such as footsteps and strange occurrences that creep her out.
Then Jake and Bree start having marital issues after Jake's partner and best friend die in action and he feels guilty for taking time off when they have the new baby. This book included many spooky occurrences, real-life issues, and one psychotic person! I enjoyed the thrilling ride!
Thank you Dream Scape Media and Netgalley for the opportunity to listen and review this one!

Thanks for #NetGalley and #DreamscapeMedia for the book #EveryFall by #AngelaDouglas. This book has depression, death and supernatural elements around a couple that moved into a house recently. Bree is a stay at home mom married to Jake who is a police officer. After moving to protect the family from dangerous drug dealer, things just aren’t the same in their marriage. Bree starts second guessing everything from her marriage to the safety of her kids. Should she leave or try and fix things?

Thank you to NetGalley for the audiobook. As a book marketed as a thriller, it was very repetitive and a thinly veiled attempt at horror/supernatural. Perhaps if it had been marketed properly, I wouldn’t have tried this book. It was definitely not my cup of tea.

Every Fall is a haunting and emotionally charged thriller that weaves psychological tension with real-world themes of trauma, grief, and the darker side of police culture.
The eerie atmosphere, combined with suspenseful storytelling, makes for an engaging read. While some moments feel slightly drawn out, the book’s exploration of trauma and its effects on relationships adds emotional weight to the mystery.
