This was such a sweet chapter book! I loved that it’s written from the perspective of a young girl, it makes it really relatable for kids in the same age range reading it. I also liked the little bits of artwork sprinkled into the chapters, drawn by Sophie. I think Sophie is meant to be a teenager but the tone sounds like she would be much younger, which is a little confusing.

As an adult I'm probably not the intended age range for The Barking Puppy by Lori Lobenstine, but this is a book that gave me so much joy.

What can I say? I'm a dog lover. I have a bichon/shih tzu mix that I'm completely obsessed with. So the premise behind The Barking Puppy just really caught my attention. From the first few pages of The Barking Puppy, I knew that Sophie was a character that a lot of young dog lovers would relate to.

Sophie and her mom move to Boston (along with her two Jack Russell Rerriers Ollie Baba and Eleanor Rigby) for new opportunities. Sophie's Mom has a new job, and they get to live closer to her godmother Lori. But not everything is great right off the bat. Sophie makes new friends in her new neighbors, but not everybody is welcoming. She has some trouble making new friends at school and there's a cranky upstairs neighbor who just doesn't like having so many barking dogs in the neighborhood!

Sophie hits it off with her neighbor Juno in the building next door. Although Juno is a few years older than Sophie, the two get along well because they are both dog owners. But Juno's pug Bonney has some respiratory ailments which lead to a lot of coughing and discomforting for the puppy. There's an optional surgery that the vet could perform on her, but it's way too costly for Juno's family to afford.

That's when Sophie and Juno get a brilliant idea. They'll write a newspaper for dogs, by dogs. And if they can sell enough copies to their dog loving friends and members of the community they just might be able to raise enough money for Bonney's surgery.

I found this book to be so sweet. It explores and discusses topics like fitting in, finding community, being comfortable with your own race and sexuality, young entrepreneurship. and most of all... love for animals! As a dog loving adult I really enjoyed this story. And I think it's a book that is perfect dog loving kids of all ages.

Thank you Netgalley, Lori, and Publisher for this ARC. I really liked Sophie, she was a kindhearted girl who wants to make the world around her a better place. This book is about a girl, named Sophie, who just moved to a new town and is faced with a new school and making new friends. She starts a newspaper with a goal of helping her dog get an expensive surgery. I actually loved this book so much because the word had Dog in it. If you truly know me, you know I ADORE dogs. I think this book is perfect for children who love dogs and could make them motivated to do something for their community.

I read this book with my 9 year old daughter and we both really enjoyed it. As a fellow brown child, my daughter resonated with the MC and could really relate to many of her experiences. The writing style is lovely for the age group the book is intended for,

The cover of The Barking Puppy immediately drew me in, and once I started reading, I wasn’t disappointed! The illustrations throughout the book are absolutely beautiful, with soft, warm colors that really bring the story to life. They perfectly complement the text, adding an extra layer of charm to each chapter. The art is not only cute but really adds to the overall feel-good vibe of the story.

This book is a delightful tale about community, friendship, and the love of dogs. Sophie, who moves to Boston with her mom and their pup, quickly bonds with her neighbor over their shared passion for dogs. Together, they start a newspaper for dogs to help raise money for a pup’s surgery. It’s such a fun concept, and I loved how the book highlights themes like diversity, philanthropy, and working together for a good cause. Even though I’m not a huge dog person, this story was so heartwarming and engaging—perfect for early readers!

Overall, The Barking Puppy is a wholesome, adorable read that’s bound to be a hit with kids, especially dog lovers. The illustrations and message make it a book I’d happily recommend to parents, educators, or anyone looking to add a sweet, feel-good story to their collection. It’s definitely one to add to a school or home library!

The illustrations were so cute are you KIDDING??? There were a few dog graphics that did look like placeholders and kinda threw me off, but other than those, the content was so cute. My little sister absolutely loved reading this with me :)

Finding community over a shared love a dogs? What could be more adorable than that. When Sophie leaves VT to move to big city Boston, she makes friends and bonds with her neighbor over the desire to do good and begin a newspaper to raise money. The drawings are adorable and the message about diversity and philanthropy were great additions to a children's story. I would purchase this for our home library or children's classrooms!

What a cute and wholesome read! I am not really a dog person but I was attracted to this book as the cover was adorable The illustrations are beautiful and very soft on the eyes. I would love to see a similar title but geared towards cats! It could be a cute series with various different pets.

I would recommend this book to parents and educators. It is a book that belongs in a school library!

Sophie, her mom, and their pup move to Boston - where finally Sophie isn’t the only brown kid. She makes a new friend thanks to their shared love of dogs and soon embark on the task of creating a newspaper for dogs by dogs - to raise funds for Juno’s dog’s surgery.

Dog and animal lovers will enjoy this one, as the fury cast is just as fun and memorable as the main characters. I loved getting to see Sophie hit the ground running in her new neighborhood - making friends and doing some great things for her community!
