A really intriguing premise and an innovative idea! The writing was also excellent. I did not finish in time but I thoroughly enjoyed what I did read! Really looking forward to finishing this.

La Tortuga is a a refugee. When she arrived in Mexico City, all she wants is a bed of her own. With very little money in her pockets she is determined to save to get a bed but life is constantly taking from her. She sleeps on the streets of Mexico City and is often confronted with exploitation, corruption, and the criminalization of migrants. She meets a little boy who’s dad was arrested and they two form an unlikely pair- too old and too young to be living this way. La Tortuga performs little acts of quiet heroism, trying to make the world better by turning garbage into gardens and trash in trees. Navigating a dangerous world, La Tortuga’s perspective gives readers an insight into the challenges of being a person with no identity.

This book was beautifully written. It is tragic and sad at times, hopeful and encouraging at others. It gives readers a unique perspective of magical realism with the refugee experience. My heart broke for La Tortuga and Miguelito. It’s a great book and I definitely recommend it.
