This is a charming, heartfelt romantic comedy that offers an emotional rollercoaster, filled with witty banter, slow-burning chemistry, and the tender struggles of single motherhood. As the final book in the But He’s a Carter Brother series, it wraps up the journey of the Carter brothers with a poignant and sweet conclusion.
The story revolves around the unlikely pairing of Evie, a single mother trying to rebuild her life, and Maverick Carter, her brother’s best friend. After life throws her a curveball, she’s forced to move in with Maverick — the one man she never wanted to face, especially not while reeling from the collapse of her world. The tension and chemistry between them is palpable from the start, as her childhood crush is now a constant presence she can’t seem to escape. Despite her best efforts to maintain distance, Maverick’s quiet support and unwavering presence gradually tear down the walls she’s built around herself.
This closed-door romance is perfect if you enjoy a slow-burn romance, with plenty of heart and depth, minus the explicit content. The author does a fantastic job of capturing the vulnerability of the Evie, who feels unworthy of Maverick’s kindness, especially as she battles her own insecurities as a single mother.
Maverick’s determination to support Evie, despite her pushing him away, is a testament to the strength of their bond. The dynamic between them is beautifully written, showcasing the delicate dance of love, patience, and healing.
I listened to this as an audiobook and it was a delightful experience, with the narrators capturing the nuances of the characters’ emotions and the humor that runs throughout the story. The pacing is just right, allowing the romance to build naturally while still delivering heartwarming moments. If you're looking for a sweet, romantic comedy with plenty of emotional depth, then this is the perfect pick.
I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media and am voluntarily leaving my review.

This is a very well-done, brother’s best friend romcom that is hard to put down. Maverick is a STUD and I loved the journey of him pursuing Evie and taking care of her and her son.

Thank you to Netgalley and Annah Conwell for the opportunity to listen to this cute book in exchange for an honest review.

But He’s My Roommate
By Annah Conwell
Narrated by Kim Churchill; John William Maddux

This book, and whole series, is a tooth ache - the good kind. It’s a very sweet, cozy, feel good story. I really enjoyed getting lost in the focus-couple’s love story without much distraction in side plots or third act breakups. The series = interconnected standalones where each book focuses on a Carter brother. I’ve read the first and last books of the series and don’t feel like I messed up reading the last book (book 4) before 2 and 3. I’ll enjoy circling back to them when the mood strikes. The audiobook is a duo (thank you!) and is well done. I really enjoyed it!

Thank you NetGalley, Annah Conwell, Dreamscape Media for this audiobook ARC.

Another great book by Annah Conwell. I'm just sad that the series is over!
It was the perfect cute rom-com style book with the added bonus of friends to lovers and a cute baby. I've enjoyed the series and this isn't one to miss.

My only "stumble" was when Maverick said he was rooting for the NHL team the Alabama Rockets that won the Stanley Cup. It made the book very slightly less realistic since that is a team that does not exist. Otherwise the rest of the story was good.

I listened to it as an audiobook and I found the narration was well done and engaging.

Thank you so much Dreamscape Media for this ALC! I adored this book and the characters. I didn’t know it was part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. I will definitely be going back and reading the rest now. We have our FMC Sloane who has a newborn baby and is recently divorced. Her brother and his best friend show up on her doorstep to make sure she is okay, and help her. She ends up moving in with the brothers best friend.. and I’m sure you can guess where this goes from there. Super cute, and funny read. Also, the Carter brothers are hilarious! The narration was great. This one was duet narration, and they did a good job! Can’t wait to read more of this series!

In the last book of the Carter Series, we learn about Maverick Carter, the youngest brother. Evie has to live with her brother's best friend, Maverick. The book is a slow burn and includes Protective MMC, Brother's best friend, Single mom, and Forced proximity all bundled into one. The book is an emotionally rollercoaster as it deals with emotional abuse and cheating. Personally, I could not get into the characters as much due to the extremely slow burn.

Just a delight! I read the book when it came out, and it was just perfection getting lost in this world again with narrators! I love love love this one! The whole series is great, but this might be my favorite one!

is there any better duo than single mom and brothers best friend? this book was written so well and I am obsessed with these two! I felt like the slowburn was perfect for this story and seeing these three become a little family metled my heart. I absolutely adore the characters in this series and I am so glad we got to see the couples from the previous books. this book was such a comfort read for me and I will definitely be reading again in the future. The narrators were perfect for this story and made it even more enjoyable!

*Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC of this audiobook; the review is my own.*

It's bittersweet to finish this series because I've really enjoyed listening to each of the books and getting to know the whole Carter family. I love books with close-knit families, and that's absolutely what you get from this series. Like the other installments, the characters deal with some serious issues (in this case, trust issues because of cheating significant others), and I think it's handled well. It's got a very similar feel to Jenny Proctor's Hawthorn Brothers series, and I recommend both of them to anyone who is looking for clean, feel-good romances that follow different siblings.

Maverick and Evie work so well together that, on first thought, you might wonder why they weren't a couple right from the start. In this case (as in many), it's a matter of timing. When they were younger, Evie was somewhat wild; Maverick would often help Drew (Evie's older brother/his best friend) get her out of sticky situations. The same happens in this book, but the timing is just right for something more to develop between them. I loved Maverick, as I loved his brothers.

Speaking of the other brothers, it was good to see them again in this book, supporting Maverick this time. And I enjoyed the little epilogue at the end that showed where each brother was over the next several months following the end of But He's My Roommate.

Note: Nothing bad. (Some kissing and a little mild innuendo, like the rest of the series.)

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:

I enjoyed both of these narrators, and I think they fit the characters of Maverick and Evie well. I feel like I've listened to them each narrate other books before this, but I'd have to look into it. Either way, I'd listen to them again.

Format: Audiobook
Release Date: Jan 28 2025
Rating: 2.5/5

I was not really a fan of this story, and was less of a fan since I was reading When Alex Met Evie at the same time... It is pretty much the same story only it feels more real and the MMC didn't give me ick vibes repeatedly.

This book goes from being so slow burn to the point of feeling like there wasn't really a connection at all immediately to "I love you" and being a happy family... Yeah, the pacing was really strange.

I don't know if it was just the narrator's tone or the actual content, but our MMC comes across as suuuuuch a douchebag. Telling Evie that she has such a big ego for thinking he was looking at her did not read as playful teasing. There's also a point when he is complaining to his brothers about how he's frustrated that they haven't kissed... Like dude she's living in your home only because her ex cheated on her and left her as a single mom, maybe focus on her emotional wellbeing instead of expecting physical intimacy to just happen.

There's a time too when Evie explicitly says no to sharing a bed with Mav and he continues to push the issue, when her saying no and being uncomfortable with it should be a done deal. The fact that he takes it as a win getting her to sleep in his bed made me really grossed out to the point that I just really couldn't root for him as a love interest.

Thanks to NetGalley & Dreamscape Media for providing an audiobook eARC of But He's My Roommate.

I instantly fell in love with the Carter family and have to read the other books! Maverick is just such a caregiver with a huge heart. They say Evie has always had a soft spot for him but it’s evident he’s always had a soft spot for her and now her son. The grocery store incident alone proves he is their protector and wants everyone to know.

ALC REVIEW:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Growing up, the Carter home was a save haven for Evie. While her connection to the family was forged through her brother, Drew (best friends with Maverick), the entire family accepted her with open arms. Now an adult, Evie finds herself on the precipice of a breakdown.

Her marriage fell apart just before giving birth to her son Beckham. Being a single-mother in New York City has left her unemployed and overwhelmed. So when Maverick Carter offers her a place to live, she has no choice but to accept. Will being back in her hometown with a childhood friend give her the chance to get back on her feet, or will her reliance on Maverick set her further back?

I had the pleasure of listening to this as an audiobook. The narration was done by the talented Kim Churchill and John William Maddux. Both Churchill and Maddux are talented voice actors in their own right. Their experience in the field is evident in the wonderful job they did voicing ALL of the characters. They truly brought Annah Conwell’s words to life.

It is important to note, But He’s My Roommate, is the fourth and final book in Conwell’s But He’s A Carter Brother Series. All four books can be read as standalone novels, or enjoyed together as a whole. I personally have only read the first and now last book in the series. While I definitely will be going back to enjoy the other two, it in no way impeded my enjoyment of this one.

The heart of this book and series as a whole, is family. Each book centers around a Carter brother establishing their own family. As such, it was beautiful to see Maverick embrace Evie and her son as his own. It just goes to show families can come in many forms. This is a relevant and much needed message today!

Read or listen to this book if you enjoy:
-Dual POVs
-Brother’s Best Friend
-Forced Proximity
-Childhood Friends to More
-Protective MMC
-Single Mother FMC

Special thanks to Netgalley, Dreamscape Media, and Annah Conwell for allowing me to listen to this book in exchange for my honest feedback.

I'm not usually an audiobook listerner as I usually prefer to read, but I'm really enjoying Annah's stories as audio books at the moment. The narrators made Mav and Evie come alive, and the brillance of Annah's writing really shines, though.

I love it, but he's my roommate, and I would highly recommend it. However, I am beginning to realise that listening to any of Annah's books is far better than reading them.

I'm deeply sad to say goodbye to the Carters, but hopefully, we see them again sometime soon.

I received an ALC from the author but read this previously of my accord and cost.

But He’s My Roommate by Annah Conwell 📕 Audio Book.

💫 ‘Is it cringy to say I’m going to miss you?’ I ask, twisting a button on his shirt. He walks me backward until I’m pressed against the side of his truck. ‘No.’ He murmurs.

Recently divorced, single mum, Evie, moves in with her brother’s best friend, Maverick, after losing her job. Maverick is Evie’s childhood crush but she is determined to keep distance between them because she doesn’t want to make things more difficult and thinks he deserves better than her. However, Maverick is determined to play the long-game and is willing to wait.

My review 📖:

Cute, romantic, closed-book with clear-cut characters and storyline.

I didn’t get into the storyline until just before the halfway point. I kept waiting for something to happen. Once it did, however, I smiled whilst listening to it and even let out an ‘eeek’ on occasion.
The storyline progressed too quickly for my liking. One minute Evie is determined to keep her distance but the next she tells him she’s falling and then they’re in love and getting married…

In addition, Evie is meant to be a new mum with a newborn but she spends a lot of time away from her baby who hardly seemed to need her and so I found that hard to follow because of the lack of realism.

I believe this book would be suitable for those who like romances with little angst, that progress quickly with a romantic ending.

Thank you dreamscapemedia and netgalley for the Audio Book.

Until this one, I've never listened to an audiobook ARC from @netgalley. The premise of this one sounded like fun though, so I decided to make this my first.

After her divorce and job loss, Evie is pretty down in the dumps. It can't get worse until her brother shows up at her NYC apartment, demanding she and her baby son move back to Atlanta where he can help her. Worst of all is he brings Maverick, her childhood crush along. Mav can see through Evie and knows just what's going on with her, though, so she's got to keep him at arms length. Easier said than done when she agrees to move back home and live with him. Fiercely independent Evie wants to do it all alone, but quickly comes to realize that Mav is happy to help. The only problem is she believes he deserves better than her.

This was quick and cute. It wasn't overly memorable for me though. It was a sweet, very PG-13 romance.

3⭐️ I do like Annah Conwell. I’ve liked a couple of her books. But sometimes her stories don’t have a well thought out plot and have nothing in them to hook you. And sadly this one fell in that vein.

Also. This isn’t a romantic comedy. We need to stop labeling every single contemporary romance a romantic comedy. Because most of them are not, and this one was not. I didn’t laugh once.

I didn’t love the characters. They were fine but I didn’t love them. The MMC was very sweet but one dimensional. No personality for either of the MCs. Like really. There was nothing about them that made me relate. And for real they had no chemistry. Very lacking in the romance department.

I have no qualms with the audiobook at all. I enjoyed both of the narrators. And that is not an easy feat. But this story itself was not fun to listen too. I found myself bored for most of it and did not get into the story. Nothing really happened, and it honestly wasn’t memorable. What happened for real though.

I did like the first book in this series so this was disappointing.

DNF at 30%. I love a brother’s best friend trope and the plot sounded super cute - I just couldn’t get into it! The narrators sounded a bit too robotic for me.

This was a cute pg romance. I did not realize this was a fourth book….whoops. This story was cute and fun but definitely deep at times. Even with it being pg the romance was still enjoyable.

This was a fun and enjoyable dual pov sibling's best friend/best friend's sibling romance. Although was a solid read, it didn't give me all the feels for the characters to up the star count.
Great read by the narrators.
