This was the 4th book in an interconnected standalone series about a group of brothers; this was the first one I’ve read and I loved it! I actually listened to it on audio and it was dual POV with male/female narration. Both narrators had smooth voices (.loved them!). Maverick “Mav” is an excellent “book boyfriend” as the golden retriever trope plays out. He definitely falls first/harder; his loyalty and devotion is so strong and sweet. While this book is predictable, I absolutely loved it! It was heartwarming and clean. I will be going back to read the first 3 in the series!

Well, now that I’ve read the first and last book in the ‘But He’s a Carter Brother’ series, I’m committed to reading books #2 and 3 asap. Because…these brothers!!!! Some of the best scenes in the book include their playful banter and brotherly concern. And the text messages! Bwahahaha! So. Much. Fun!

Each book works well as a standalone, so no worries if you are new to the series. Though all the brothers and their significant others take up some page time in this book, it’s still easy to follow along. There’s also a sweet epilogue for each couple at the end which was a neat way to finish off the series.

So…Maverick and Evie…swoon, thud, and swoon some more. You’ll definitely want to have your fainting couch handy for the duration of the read. This is a slow burn romance (brother’s best friend, friends to more tropes) that’s taut with emotional tension. Love the way their relationship evolves over time. A lovely mix of gentle heat and laugh out loud humour. And, oh my, when the kissing starts! Toe-curls all the way!

A lighthearted romantic comedy with characters who captured my heart

I listened to the audio edition of ‘But He’s My Roommate’ narrated by Kim Churchill and John William Maddux. Loved the dual narration and these performers teamed up to create a memorable listening experience. Highly recommend the audio book.

My thanks to Dreamscape Media and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.

I had a great time with this story and will definitely go back to reading the others in the series. I had a beautiful time with this story and the characters and I am definitely looking forward to the authors other works. Slow burn adjacent.

Evie is divorced and a single mom raising her son in NYC. She works as a fashion photographer but gets fired from her job as her ex is a model with connections. Her brother Drew and his friend Maverick go to NYC and convince her to go home to Georgia where she will have support & somewhere to stay while she gets back on her feet. The problem is, Evie doesn't like people helping her out and she would be staying at Maverick's house. They have been friends for years but have been out of touch most recently. As they live together, they discover their relationship growing into something entirely new. As Evie begins to heal, she finds herself willing to try again with Maverick.

But He's my Roommate was the first book that I had read in the Carter brother series. The book was a cute, short romance. Evie's character is shattered after her ex cheated on her and once she decided to start over, her healing journey was beautiful. She was such a relateable character going through motherhood alone with no support. The author captured how isolating it can feel to be a new mom with no support. Evie started off broken, but slowly begins to heal with the help of Maverick. Their relationship bloomed from friendship and trust and once it started, they both barreled into love pretty quickly. Maverick was the typical strong, supportive friend. Even though technically he was Drew's best friend, he and Evie already had an established friendship. He was so sweet and protective over Evie and her son and he continued to support her, even when she tried to push him away. Maverick's family of siblings and their partners was very close knit and provides the couple with all the love and support they need.

This sweet romance was perfect for those who want to dive in to a brother's best friend, friends to lovers, & forced proximity storyline. Even though this book is the fourth in the series, I read it as a standalone and really enjoyed it.

I was so sad to see this series come to an end! Annah has created such a wonderful family and heartfelt, meaningful storylines. It’s been fun seeing each brother find his happy ending. Their love for one another and their love for their deceased mother is a beautiful thing.

I enjoyed Mav’s book. He was so protective and supportive of Evie, and he was so good with Beckham. I’m a sucker for a big softie that loves kids.

The audio was very good. I always prefer dual narration and love that this series has had that for each book.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the advanced listening copy. All opinions are my own.

This was a cute, closed-door romance between childhood friends (MMC is also brother’s best friend). There wasn’t really anything that stood out about this story. It’s something we’ve seen before in romance. That being said, I enjoyed the story and characters. I think this book makes a nice popcorn type read.

I got this from NetGalley so I didn’t realize it was a series. It can be read as a stand alone so it didn’t hurt the experience, I could just tell that the other brothers had stories before the MMC Maverick. The book is super cute and Maverick is a complete golden retriever. I love the friendship the main characters have.

Side note- if it wasn’t for reading the book here I never would have chosen it because the cover isn’t very attractive. I’m so glad I did because I will be reading more books from this author now.

This cozy romantic comedy follows a relatable heroine as she navigates heartbreak, motherhood, and the complexities of moving in with her childhood crush, Maverick Carter. The narrative unfolds with warmth and sincerity, offering readers a story about healing, unexpected connections, and finding love in the most surprising places.

The banter between the characters is engaging, with Maverick’s unwavering support and the heroine’s inner strength creating a dynamic that’s both sweet and empowering. But He’s my Roommate is a cute, cosy, second chance, single mum, romance.

I really liked the low stakes, slow burn of Evie and Maverick’s relationship, and Maverick’s protective and nurturing attitude towards Evie and her son. The various siblings and their meddling made for some interesting dynamics, and it was overall heartwarming and low conflict, perfect for an escapist and relaxing read.

The audio production was top notch, injecting warmth and humour into Maverick and Evie’s chemistry, and making this an enjoyable listen.

Thank you Dreamscape Media for a complementary copy of this audiobook. Opinions expressed are my own.

This was great! At first I wasn’t sure I was jiving with the story but after the 20% mark it really picked up and I couldn’t stop listening.
I am thankful to have gotten the ALC for free from Dreamscape Media through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.

I enjoyed both narrators who did a great job with the material. I did have to speed it up to make it comfortable to listen to. Or was. Fairly quick read even at 1x rate.

This was a slow burn of sorts and I did get angry at one point as I just wanted them to communicate but it was ok in the end. This romance had some meat of the bones so to say with the characters having to deal with real life tough situations. But you wanted to root for them the whole way.

This comes out on January 28th so put it on your TBR today!
My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars and I rarely round up.

⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again

I really enjoyed this book! It was super cosy and cute and soooo adorable! I’ve never read anything by this author before so when I got this audiobook from NeyGalley I was intrigued. I loved the narrators and how the story went, I will definitely go back and read the other books in this series some time in the future as this one gives you a good glimpse at all the other couples in this book series and makes you want to get to know them more.

Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and Annah Conwell for giving me an advanced listener’s copy of this cute book 🥰

3.5 ⭐️

I liked the sweet second chance romance plot line. I especially liked the inclusion of Ev having a baby from a previous marriage as a way to show how much Mav cares for her. The book had good romantic build up as a slow burn and all *romance* is closed door. I have not read any of the other books in the Carter series before this book and while it wasn’t needed for the plot I think I would have ended up rating it higher. You can understand everything in the story without having read the previous books, but there are A LOT of names and plot lines mentioned that feel rushed if you haven’t read the other 3. The book was a bit slow for me at first because of this, but once I got into it (a bit less than halfway through) I finished it really quickly.

In terms of the narration of the audiobook, I liked that it was a dual pov with a male and female narrator. I listened to the audiobook at 1.25 speed and it was a good pace without making the voices sound too rushed. I did notice a couple of times where the narrators used the wrong pronouns when referring to the other main character (e.g. Mav saying “he” when referring to Evie and vice versa). But otherwise I liked the narration.

I'll start by saying I've not read any books in this series but I don't feel like I missed anything.

Now, I liked this until I didn't. The story is okay but it's so low stakes that everything just resolves in one sentence and nothing really developed. I don't want to spoil it with examples but it was just so tidy and relationships are complicated.

So, if you are looking for this kind of book I think this series will be just right for you. I just wanted more from it.

Thank you so much to NG, the author and Dreamscape Media for this audio ARC. I attest that I'm leaving my review voluntarily and honestly.

📖But He’s My Roommate is the fourth book in a series about brothers by Annah Conwell. I haven’t read the first three, but will definitely be adding them to my TBR after this!

The story centers around a dual POV from main characters Maverick and Evie. The author described it on her IG as “a sweet and cozy brother’s best friend romance featuring a single mom and her new roommate who happens to be a fighter who owns a bakery.”

📸One aspect that set this book apart from others on my shelf was Conwell’s use of vivid imagery and simile:

“Gold at the bottom of a riverbed”

“Lemon juice in a cut”

“Fades like a vintage photograph”

“Like a child outgrows shoes”

🎧I’m always a fan of a dual POV, especially when listening to audiobooks with alternating voices for the main characters. Not for the nothing—I think the fmc’s voice actor struck the perfect tone of slightly exhausted leading into peacefulness as the book went on.

Maverick and Evie are a couple you can’t help but root for, especially given everything each of them has been through ♥️

But He’s My Roommate is available on January 28, 2025!

Clean (Non-Explicit), Complicated & Cozy

Audiobook Narration:

5 stars for the recording and execution of the book.

Kim Churchill- Kim didn’t have any particular accent in her performance. She delivers the performance as Evie in a very girl next door tone that is easy to listen to. Her reading was delivered with authentic fluctuations and vulnerability where appropriate.

John William Maddux- John also performed without any distinct accent. Embodying Maverick, he sounds like the quintessential brother’s best friend: a solid figure, steady tone and caring pitch.

The duos voices were a complimentary pairing together. The audio of this book was such an easy but engaging book to take in. I tend to increase the speed on my audiobooks. I preferred to listen to this recording between 1.75-2.00 (2.50 max) speed.

But He's My Roommate:

3.75 stars for the story itself.

A sweet story sans any explicit scenes.

Annah tackled real life adversities with infidelity and starting over as a new single mom.

“My family, we are spoiled goods. A shattered picture frame that cuts you whenever you try to retrieve the original photo.”

I found it weird Evie’s brother, Drew, didn’t know Beckham’s name or even had a photo text to him when he was born. Or that her family didn’t have her address for over 7 months while she was having a baby. Most people would have something mailed to them with some sort of registry item for the baby. These contradicted a brother that flew into town (a week after the bold red flags) but nonetheless to do a wellness check in person on his sister.

Maverick and the Carter family built such a wholesome world that magnetizes you into their family. I definitely see the appeal of consuming the other three books in this series.

Thank you to Annah Conwell and Dreamscape Media for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

3.5 stars, this cute second chance romance follows a single mother recovering from a nasty divorce when her overprotective brother and his best friend show up on her doorstep, determined to fix everything. Suddenly, she's living with her brother's best friend, realizing maybe he was mister right all along.

If you want a sweet romance, this book is for you. No smut, just poor adoration from the boy next door. This book is sweet, funny, and healing all at once. I recommend it to anyone just wanting a clean second-chance romance. The male and female narrators of the audiobook where perfect at their job.

This book had all the tropes, I love the single mom, brother’s best friend, roommates tropes but the execution didn’t do it for me. The slow burn was way too slow, to the point where I was bored and zoning out. There wasn’t enough emotional depth or drama to keep me hooked, and the closed-door romance made the story feel a little too safe.

I’m all for sizzle with no spice, but the burner was completely off here. While I liked Maverick’s character and how supportive he was, the pacing and overall lack of excitement made this book feel like a chore to get through. If you’re looking for a super low-angst romance with a sweet ending, you might enjoy it more than I did.

Thank you NetGalley for the arc

I enjoyed listerening to this on audiobook. I didn’t realize until the Epilogue that this is the 4th book in the series because I received the ARC through NetGalley. Reading it as a standalone didn’t give it enough time to develop the characters like I would have hoped but that’s my own fault for not realizing it was a series. The plot was cute, and overall I enjoyed it but it didn’t invoke a ton of emotion or feelings in me the way I hoped it would.

Annah Conwell once again delivers a captivating and heartfelt addition to the Carter family series with But He’s My Roommate. This story effortlessly draws readers in, blending themes of love, family, and emotional connection while introducing yet another Carter family member to adore.

The strength of the Carter family is beautifully showcased in this installment. Their decision to fly out and support the heroine isn’t driven by a belief that she can’t handle her challenges but by their deep love and intuition that something isn’t quite right. It’s a touching reminder of the power of family and the importance of being there for the people we care about, no matter the distance.

The romance between Maverick and the heroine is tender and heartwarming. Maverick’s quiet, steadfast feelings create a beautiful foundation for their relationship, and watching their bond grow from friendship into something more is deeply satisfying. Conwell captures the delicate process of love blooming, likening it to a flower unfolding—a metaphor that feels perfectly apt for their journey.

As with the rest of the series, the writing is rich with warmth, humor, and emotion. The characters feel real and relatable, and their struggles and triumphs are both compelling and inspiring. Conwell’s ability to balance family dynamics with romance creates a story that feels as much about connection as it is about love.

But He’s My Roommate is a must-read for fans of the Carter family series. It’s a story that will leave you smiling, swooning, and appreciating the beauty of love in all its forms. Annah Conwell has once again proven her talent for crafting stories that resonate long after the final page.
