JeongHyeon Seon's illustrations elevate this book from just a sweet, simple narrative to something eye-catching and powerful; there's a real sweep to his style that is likely to pick you up and move you. JiYu Kim's piece in this puzzle is perhaps less ambitious or immediately impressive, but it carries the weight of a story with real import to children who feel at a loss when it comes to the whole concept of "participation"--participation in competitions without a hope of winning is, in fact, the heart and soul of the plot of this book. Adults will recognize the importance of the book's message, but it remains to be seen if the book's target audience (2-5 year olds) matches up with the sophisticated understandings of self and society that the book is predicated upon.
