After absolutely loving Reckoning, the first book in the Silver Blackthorn trilogy by Kerry Wilkinson, I was excited to continue on Silver's adventure after escaping Windsor Castle. I love how Renegade picks up right where Reckoning left off, and readers get to follow Silver and her companions as they fight for survival in the woods. Just as with the first book, Renegade is fast-paced and action-packed. There is never a moment of boredom for the reader, and I flew through this exciting novel in just a few days.
Dystopian novels are some of my favorite to read, and perhaps that is why Renegade feels very derivative of other popular books in this genre. While this was not a problem for me, I can see how other readers might be annoyed at the lack of creativity with the plot. Personally, I live for dystopian novels where our female protagonist leads a revolution after escaping horrific captivity and a life of poverty. Plus, Silver is an extremely likable character, and I love all the people she meets along the way, too.
I was, however, a bit let down with the ending of this book. After existing in Silver's world for a while, readers are suddenly introduced to this new piece of technology that drastically changes the laws of physics. I thought this science fiction twist was a bit of a cop-out, and felt it was only included in the novel as a way for the characters to escape a dangerous situation. Perhaps if technology was more cutting edge throughout the first novel, I would be more apt to believe this plot twist.
All in all, I think the Silver Blackthorn trilogy is a lot of fun. I really enjoy getting to know the characters, and it is another young adult dystopian for me to read and recommend. If you are a fan of this genre, I think you will like this series, but if dystopian is overdone for you, I would stay away.
