A moving historical fiction novel by a new to me author that is perfect for fans of Maggie O'Farrel's Hamnet. This was a clever look into the theatre world of Shakespeare and the role that women had on the stage at that time. While technically not allowed to perform, some did. Great on audio and recommended for fans of the movie Shakespeare in love. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

I really liked the characters and the way they maneuvered through their life and times. I appreciate the aspects gender bending and females empowerment.

The cover had me sold before I even started the book. It is always fascinating to read about Elizabethan age and the theater. I especiially enjoyed the exploration of gender roles.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Audio for the chance to listen to an advance copy of this audiobook.

I really liked this one! Nicole Galland brings life to this era with a "page" turning story about acting, Elizabethan science, inductive reasoning, courtly drama, and, of course, romantic love.
I listened to this audiobook in one session while I was painting my bathroom (yes, even the ceiling), and I owe an extra thank you to the author, whose wonderful work made a tedious task far more bearable. The characters were all likeable and well fleshed out; even those who made one or two appearances had strong presence.
I think this book could be a good recommendation even for those readers who "don't like historical fiction", because, while obvious care has been put towards making the setting as accurate as possible, everything that happens is in service to the plot. Galland doesn't waste any breath on set-dressing unless its relevant, and you won't walk away feeling like you've been attending a lecture about the Elizabethan period. While the characters are (mostly) based on real people, the story itself would have been equally riveting in any other setting.
I can see this being a strong candidate for a bookclub selection, and look forward to recommending it to library customers looking for an engaging historical read.
Ell Potter's narration was strong! I would definitely listen to other audiobooks narrated by her.
