If you’re someone who loves everything about Italy—from the Autogrills to Giolitti in Rome—you’ll eagerly anticipate a book like The Italians, and it doesn’t disappoint. While the pacing starts a bit slow, it picks up after the first few chapters, drawing you into a rich exploration of modern Italy. Personally, I adore books with footnotes; they make me feel like I’m uncovering little secrets with every one I read, and this book delivers on that front.

There’s so much to absorb and enjoy, as Mr. Hooper clearly has his finger on the pulse of contemporary Italian culture. That said, I found it puzzling that he seems to take an anti-religious stance, particularly in a country where over 85% of the population identifies as Christian. This perspective might not resonate with everyone, nor will the dense mix of facts and history. However, for those who harbor a deep love for Italy or a keen interest in its culture, The Italians offers a rewarding read—a true diamond in the rough.
