Food safety is an extremely important issue and the U.S. Government is terrible at monitoring it. The author points this out frequently throughout this book to the point of killing the message's effectiveness. He also points out, quite accurately, that the government takes care of big business far more than the consumer, but again, the message is diluted by repetition. The book also suffers from a lack of organization (the chapters wander quite a bit) and there is a lack of focus that detracts from the readability. Unfortunately, while there is a place for all of the subjects he tries to cover in this book, some really don't fit in as well, such as the cottage foods industry chapter and the sugar is bad final chapter. These were distractions and should have been left out. Since this was not a finished product, I will only say that I hope the notes and bibliography are better placed in the published copy. All in all, this was a good book on an important subject, but too flawed to be a classic in the field. As always, these are my opinions and should be taken as that.
