I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.
This has been on my TBR pile for so long, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really enjoyed the storyline and seeing the characters change throughout the story was a great character development. The plot was great and kept my attention. I'm glad I got the chance to read this and will be on the lookout for more in the future!
Inherit Midnight by Kate Kae Myers
I always find myself gravitating towards books with a travel element to them, and when I read some reviews that said this book gives off Amazing Race vibes I was sold! The Amazing Race is one of my very favorite shows. I enjoyed the competition aspect, but I feel like character development really suffered as a result. There were a lot of family members to keep track of, and they all kind of blended together into a clump of Avery's family. I also didn't find the history lessons on Avery's family to be very compelling, and found myself drifting my way through those at times. The mystery aspect of this book didn't really grab me like I had hoped. Riley was my favorite character, and I found him to be a sweet relief from the rest of the characters.
This book was just okay. At first I was excited because it had an Amazing Race feel, along with a hint of the board game Clue thrown in for good measure. I enjoy a good mystery wrapped around disturbing family politics, but unfortunately Inherit Midnight ultimately falls flat. The characterizations are weak, and, what's worse, I didn't find the obstacles very compelling. They were all about the history of Avery's family, reading more like a lesson I'd get in school than exciting clues to solve. So I ended up skimming a lot of those details. The book felt overly long. The romance is really sweet, though, and Riley (the love interest) was easily my favorite character. I was hoping for a bit more out of Inherit Midnight, but maybe others will find it more fun and thrilling than I did.
This book was a great surprise. It was way more entertaining than I thought it was going to be. Avery is the black sheep of the family, her birth causing a scandal that had major effects on her life. She was most recently sent off to boarding school, a military style place so she could be monitored round the clock.
We first meet Avery as she is trying to escape.
I'm a fan of Avery. She's smart and fearless and resourceful. I like how she snuck out and didn't want her grandmother's rule to define her. Riley, her chaperone through the challenges is typical cute and understanding main interest, but that doesn't make it bad. I like how normal Riley is with Avery as the rest of her family is CRAY! He really stood out because he was such a strong sure rock of a character that she could count on.
>And the family. Woah. Think Knives Out style type of family, everyone going crazy for the money money money. It was pretty fun. I sped through reading it in two days and looked forward to seeing what crazy challenges dear old grandma could invent.
The plot is well paced and the characters a little cardboard, but it didn't bother me. It was more about the challenges and Avery and whom to trust. With a lot hanging in the balance (not only the inheritance but mostly, Avery not having to go back to that school), the danger an urgency was there from the beginning.
Overall, I think Inherit Midnight is a really fun and lively book that a lot of people will enjoy. It has danger and history and crazy characters and just enough romance to satisfy.
I unfortunately was not able to read this book. I was excited when ever I had chosen to download or pick this book up on Netgalley. However, time moves by so quickly and I never got to read it.
Inherit Midnight has been on my TBR since what feels like forever. I have had it on my Kindle for about 5 years at least and I have always been meaning to read it. It sounded like a book that would be totally my thing. A mix of The Amazing Race with a hint of my favorite middle grade book, The Westing Game. All the pieces were there but unfortunately it didn’t live up to what I was expecting. Instead of a solid adventure story that was also a mystery I got something muddled. Everything felt so convent and cliche which completely disappointed me. It was a fast read, there is no doubt about that and I didn’t struggle reading it, but all in all it was kind of dull and nothing like The Amazing Race vibe I was sold on. Definitely not a favorite of mine, but doesn’t mean you might not enjoy it. Honestly I’m just happy to have read it because I was holding on to it for a long time.
