It's 1957 and Arkansas is having its streets run amock with political and racial issues. We see this through the eyes of 12-year-old Archie, who struggles to come to terms with what's happening at school and his home every day. While all he wants to do is get lost in basketball, the world doesn't let him, as he witnesses bigotry at close quarter from his dad and best friend. Having unwillingly witnessed what he things is a murder, he now needs to save himself and also face his demons to decide what's wrong and what's right. The Great Pretender is a thought-provoking book, and Lester's writing style is quite captivating. Archie's slip-ups and vulnerbalities are endearing, making this a lovely read. Many thanks to Lester and NetGalley for gifting me with a copy of this book.
