The Messenger is carrying an important message. He stops in a dismal village inn but once the innkeeper learns a Lich is after him, he is thrown out into the night. He comes across Luke, a young forest tracker. Unfortunately, the two messages are destroyed. The only thing the messenger can tell Luke is to go to the Hamilton Military Academy and protect the heir.
The Lich is powerful and created a demon after the chaos elf failed to kill the messenger before he passed on the message. Luke is placed in the Academy as a student. He makes good friends and some acquaintances. His biggest problem is not knowing who the heir is. Without magic, Luke cannot fight the Lich but with the help of his friends, he has a chance to stay alive during his quest.
The action in the story builds. The characters are somewhat developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. This is a great beginning to a hero series. If you like fantasy young adult books, you will enjoy reading this one.
