Bridget’s life changed completely in one moment. While driving her best friend’s car she stalled being unused to a stick. A drunk driver slammed into the stalled car sending it careening into the nearby icy water. Her friend and her unborn baby died, Bridget was badly injured, actually had been dead for a few minutes before being brought back and had remained in a coma for close to a year.
Now recovering at her parent’s home, Bridget is ready to reclaim her life. She couldn’t go back to nursing, but her cousin had offered her a job at the animal clinic. At the moment that job was a lifesaver. Bridget was still suffering from intense headaches, which she kept from her mother who was now clingy and overprotective of the daughter she nearly lost. Bridget felt she was going crazy, smothered under her mother’s constant worrying – which is why she’s sneaking out of her house in a pouring rain storm with her bike so early in the morning… hoping to avoid another argument about her safety. Which might have been perfectly fine if she hadn’t slowed to pull off to the brim because of a sudden intense headache moment – and if a car hadn’t brushed by herr, causing the bike to crash and leaving her hurt, drenched and despondent in the rain drenched run-off stream.
Rob had recently lost his sister, Charlie to suicide. He wasn’t coping well at all and blamed himself for not keeping a closer eye on her after her boyfriend’s death. She was a recovering drug addict, and he should have suspected that she might return to using to block out her pain. Because his mind was on Charlie it really was fate that seemed to step in to have him noticing the injured, drenched biker on the side of the road. After seeing how backy Bridget’s bike was damaged and that she had some injuries of her own Rob had intended to take her to a nearby hospital and only relented to taking Bridget to the animal clinic as she insisted knowing that her cousin could look after her needs almost as well.
The house that Charlie was living in stood vacant now. Rob had planned to do some work on it, being in the construction business himself and perhaps rent it out. It had belonged to their parents but now it was his, and it hurt to be inside the place where his sister had died. He felt the freezing air surround him at times, oddly only in certain spots. But it was further proof that the house needed more work. During the time Bridget was being tended Rob had spoken with her cousin and between them had thought that offering the house rent free in exchange for house sitting would be a good solution to Bridget’s family troubles.
Neither of them knew that Bridget saw dead people. Or that Charlie was still in her home, desperate for someone to hear her and avenge her death. For she had not killed herself – she was murdered, and she knew who killed her.
From the opening scene of Ghostly Liaison you will be pulled into this story. This intriguing novel is a blend of many things – romance, mystery, suspense, ghosts and killers. I’ve given you a good setup of the basic beginning of this tale, perhaps more than i usually would but the story is a compelling, complicated and enjoyable tangle of characters, cross stories and emotions. I stayed up far too late to finish it because I simply could not walk away. Every ending of a chapter that I told myself was enough for the night lead me to need to know what was happening next.
I enjoyed all of the characters, and there are many secondary people who enhance this story – but by far my favorite was Charlie. She is feisty and straightforward – and one determined ghost.
Ghostly Liaison is a story that will draw you into a complicated tale, but don’t let that keep you away. I believe you will become invested in discovering how the killer will finally be caught as well as enjoying a love story with bumps along the way.
